Adaptive Surfing in Southern California: The Community Built

Programs serving surfers with disabilities and what three decades have produced

The Programs

The adaptive surfing programs operating across Southern California -- AmpSurf, Life Rolls On, the ISA adaptive division -- have built a community of surfers with physical disabilities whose presence in lineups and competition is changing what the surf culture understands about who surfing is for. The change is documented in program growth and competitive development.

The Infrastructure

The adaptive surfing infrastructure: volunteer surfer mentors providing physical assistance; equipment adaptations for different physical conditions; water safety protocols specific to adaptive surfing. Each component represents community investment that makes the programs function consistently.

The Documentation

Surfing LA covers adaptive surfing because the surf community's inclusion of surfers with disabilities is the surf culture at its best, and the programs that make it possible deserve the documentation that their contribution to the sport warrants.
