I purchased this unit (Hydrofarm AAPW1000 92-Watt 1000 GPH Indoor/Outdoor pump) on April 25, 2022 and wrote this review on June 15, 2022. I am using the Hydrofarm for my small ornamental pond which holds about 340 gallons. This pump is powerful for my needs! I replaced my old anemic VIVOSUN 800GPH Submersible Pump(3000L/H, 24W) which failed after one year in the hopes of a more audible water sound, better water circulation and oxygen generation and less overall clogging. TLDR; huge improvement, night-and-day difference. The pump itself below the water level makes zero noise. I removed the silly foam "filter" as this would have clogged instantly in my natural water conditions (string algae, lily roots, snails, goldfish, etc). I do not have a bog filter at this time. I have a small rock fountain set about 3 feet high from the water surface. This pump sits about 1 1/2 feet below the water surface on the bottom resting on the pond liner amongst the muck and lily roots. The total height rise is about 5 feet using 3/8 inch diameter clear tubing. I used the provided nipple that came with the pump. The tubing runs about 6-7 feet in length along the back of the rocks in a few gentle S-bends climbing to the falls/fountain top. I have the flow-shutter completely closed and it provides my falls with an energetic flow rate and a small river sound (almost too loud at night falling 2 1/2 feet). Every few weeks I will simply open the flow valve a little (1/2 turn) to clear out the muck in the intake while I skim or cleanup dead lily pads and the flow rate roars back to life over the falls/fountain edge almost instantly, then I close it again for the minimum flow. Very pleased so far. My next update to this review will be done in about a year.

Just got my 4th one of these, they're quiet and powerful. I have two mounted externally and two submersed and they all run great. My office chair is about 4 feet from the two external pumps and most of the time I can't even hear them run.

This is a good pump for the money. Its never failed me. It is pretty quiet as well!

Purchased same model a year ago & just replaced with same. I use it in a small fish pond & it pumps 24/7. Perfect size

Purchased this pump to power an irrigation system I set up for our papaya tree. Papayas are notoriously thirsty and when we are away for a few days I will put this “system” in operation. The pump lifts a decent amount of water three feet (vertically) and then moves it another 15 feet to the papaya’s pot. I have set up a timer so it pumps for the exact time I need and I adjusted the slider on the pump’s housing so the right amount of water is delivered. It works perfectly for what I need. It is a small pump so it isn’t going to “power” a large system or move huge amounts of water- but what I need it for it works perfectly!

Easily replaced the pump in my hydroponic water tower garden

For the short time that I've used this pump, it was amazing! The power of this puppy was well worth the money, and the materials seem quality. I was able to drain a 55-gallon container and pump the water up 6ft with LOTS of pressure in like 5-minutes. A+ suction power. The only issue I had, which is why I deducted the star, was the company’s dumb choice to add a 5/8” outlet. That is such a random size and it limits PVC applications. I bought this used a couple of years ago for a project that never really happened. I was a total novice to pumps and had no clue what I needed or about fitting sizes. While working on another project recently, I remembered that I had this pump and tried to work it into the project. However, because of the ridiculous 5/8” outlet fitting, hard plumbing this pump with PVC was impossible and soft vinyl tubing was unstable in my configuration under the water pressure from the pump. For this reason, I had to buy a completely different pump for my project instead of upcycling my old junk. It feel so wrong and wasteful , but it had to be done to get my DIY project completed.

Use with rain barrels is amazing pants. Zero regrets.

I use this pump with my rain barrels to get some pressure going to water my garden. I've had it for 2 years and I've just bought a second one for my second rain barrel. I use to unhook it and carry it from one rain barrel to the other at opposite ends of my backyard. Needless to say, this is the best thing I ever did for water conservation (and the water bill) at my house and I'm super stoked that I'm getting another one and can set up a permanent watering situation. Highly recommend.

Solid little pump

Great little pump! Very quiet and doesnt make too much heat. Initially was using a 400gph pump to recirculate a 6 plant DWC system. Even when set to low the 400gph pump flowed too much water and I needed to use valves to restrict flow. The 160gph on low is just right. Very small. Feels solid. Plants are happy AF.

Difficult to hard plumb with British threads!

The quality of the pump seems fine. I never plugged it in, nor set it up as I wanted to hard plumb this to 1/2" potable water PVC. The problem is the threading on the outlet and inlet (option). The outlet is 5/8" British pipe thread. I didn't even check out the inlet. I wanted to have a potable (sort of) option. Even for irrigation with standard irrigation 1/2 or 3/4 black pipe the barb fittings included don't work. Pex 1/2 doesn't work for potable. You are stuck with 1/2" ID line to jerry rig up an attachment to PVC. I did that with 1/2 polyethylene and crimp the hell out of a PEX barbed 1/2" x 1/2" MPT, but figured I'd just return the pump instead of wasting more time screwing around. Quote from Hydrofarm "The thread size for our Active Aqua submersible pumps are not proprietary, but are G threads (British Standard Pipe) which are uncommon in North America unfortunately. The thread sizes for the AAPW1000 model are G3/4" inlet and G5/8" output. " Yay! Even in Britain 5/8" is not so common to find adapter bushings.

Great little pump!

I have only used this pump a few times to experiment with my ebb & flow hydroponics system. Will be using it often very soon, when my seedlings are ready for the system. I use this for 4 x 4"OD x 10 foot long PVC pipes and they fill up and drain perfectly with this pump. I tried only 2 PVC pipes but the pump was way too much, even on the lowest setting. I bought two thinking I would split the system. I would have to exchange for a smaller GPH pump if I stayed with the split system, so instead I will just keep the second pump as a spare. They're $20, so it doesn't hurt to have a backup.

It is an awesome little pump...until...

I liked it. I will buy another one to replace the one I have. Sadly, after only three months of use, it has decided to become really noisy. It still pumps, but it buzzes and vibrates. I took it apart to clean it and I discovered that the magnetic core, on the rotor, is cracked and it has a fair-sized (3-4mm) chunk missing from it. I presume that has affected the balance of the shaft and it is now acting as an eccentric shaft. It obviously needs replacement.
