13 th Sunday of Ordinary Time (June 27, 2021)
Mark 5:21-43 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” He went off with him and a large crowd followed him. There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” But his disciples said to him, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, Who touched me?” And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

This is a long, rich selection from the Gospel of Mark, and it is worth reading and spending time with in prayer. People were learning of Jesus’s miraculous power to heal and they were coming at Him from all directions. Jairus, a synagogue official, fell at the feet of Jesus and asked Him to heal his daughter, who was dying. As they set out for Jairus’s house, many people followed.
Despite the crowd pressing in on Jesus, He felt someone touch His cloak. How could He feel such a soft touch? Jesus felt the power go out from Him. The woman had taken a chance touching Jesus, because anyone she touched was made “unclean” according to Jewish laws. However, instead of becoming unclean Himself, Jesus healed the woman, who had been suffering from hemorrhages for 12 years. He told her that her FAITH saved her.
In the town of Magdala in Israel, St. Mary Magdalene’s home town, there is a church dedicated to the women of the Bible. Downstairs is a painting of this scene of the woman touching the cloak of Jesus, entitled “Encounter” by Daniel Cariola. It has become one of my favorite paintings and I have a print in my office. While Jesus was healing the hemorrhaging woman, someone arrived to tell Jairus that “his daughter has already died so why bother the Master any longer.” According to the law, if Jesus touched the body of the dead girl, He would be made unclean. Without panic, Jesus said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid. Just have FAITH.”
Who was Jairus? Jairus was a leader in the synagogue, who had no doubt seen and heard of the miracles associated with Jesus. Was Jairus a true follower of Jesus, or was he the desperate Jewish daddy of a dying 12-year-old little girl with nowhere else to turn but to this Miracle Man who claimed to be the Son of God?
The story concludes when Jesus arrived at Jairus’s house. Jesus asked, “Why this commotion and weeping? The girl is not dead but sleeping!” People in the house ridiculed Jesus and mocked Him. He excused them all except His three closest friends; Peter, James and John, as well as Jairus and his wife. They went into the room and Jesus took the little girl by the hand and said “Talitha koum,” which means “little girl, I say to you arise!” The little girl who was dead was now alive again. It is likely that Jairus changed from being a curious Jewish “fan of Jesus” to a transformed believer and follower of Jesus through the miracle Our Lord performed on His daughter.
Jesus shows us that He has power to heal and to overcome even death itself. Each one of us is going through difficult times in our lives. Maybe your child is battling depression or suicidal thoughts. Maybe your marriage is on the rocks and you face difficult temptations. Maybe you are not sure you can pay your bills or feed your family. We must remember that there is nothing that is beyond Jesus’s power. And He offers us those same comforting words today, “Do not be afraid. Just have FAITH.”
As I read these stories of Jesus being inundated with people reaching out to Him, pushing in on Him, begging Him for healing, I cannot help but think of the millions of people that cry out to Him daily. Our God can handle all our needs. He gives each of us the personal attention that we need, even if it seems that His answer is silence. That is beyond our understanding; yet that is why He is God and we are not.
Let us call out to Jesus today with whatever is on our hearts. If we need healing, reach out to touch His cloak. If we need a miracle, He is the One who can do it. If we need comfort, He is The Comforter. Maybe we have had things that have plagued us for 12 years or more. It seems like nothing will ever change. Let us go to Jesus TODAY with FAITH and seek His healing in our hearts and in our lives. Remember, “Do not be afraid. Just have FAITH.”

En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús regresó en la barca al otro lado del lago, se quedó en la orilla y ahí se le reunió mucha gente. Entonces se acercó uno de los jefes de la sinagoga, llamado Jairo. Al ver a Jesús, se echó a sus pies y le suplicaba con insistencia: “Mi hija está agonizando. Ven a imponerle las manos para que se cure y viva”. Jesús se fue con él, y mucha gente lo seguía y lo apretujaba. Entre la gente había una mujer que padecía flujo de sangre desde hacía doce años. Había sufrido mucho a manos de los médicos y había gastado en eso toda su fortuna, pero en vez de mejorar, había empeorado. Oyó hablar de Jesús, vino y se le acercó por detrás entre la gente y le tocó el manto, pensando que, con sólo tocarle el vestido, se curaría. Inmediatamente se le secó la fuente de su hemorragia y sintió en su cuerpo que estaba curada. Jesús notó al instante que una fuerza curativa había salido de él, se volvió hacia la gente y les preguntó: “¿Quién ha tocado mi manto?” Sus discípulos le contestaron: “Estás viendo cómo te empuja la gente y todavía preguntas: ‘¿Quién me ha tocado?’ ” Pero él seguía mirando alrededor, para descubrir quién había sido. Entonces se acercó la mujer, asustada y temblorosa, al comprender lo que había pasado; se postró a sus pies y le confesó la verdad. Jesús la tranquilizó, diciendo: “Hija, tu fe te ha curado. Vete en paz y queda sana de tu enfermedad”. Todavía estaba hablando Jesús, cuando unos criados llegaron de casa del jefe de la sinagoga para decirle a éste: “Ya se murió tu hija. ¿Para qué sigues molestando al Maestro?” Jesús alcanzó a oír lo que hablaban y le dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: “No temas, basta que tengas fe”. No permitió que lo acompañaran más que Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago. Al llegar a la casa del jefe de la sinagoga, vio Jesús el alboroto de la gente y oyó los llantos y los alaridos que daban. Entró y les dijo: “¿Qué significa tanto llanto y alboroto? La niña no está muerta, está dormida”. Y se reían de él. Entonces Jesús echó fuera a la gente, y con los padres de la niña y sus acompañantes, entró a donde estaba la niña. La tomó de la mano y le dijo: “¡Talitá, kum!”, que significa: “¡Óyeme, niña, levántate!” La niña, que tenía doce años, se levantó inmediatamente y se puso a caminar. Todos se quedaron asombrados. Jesús les ordenó severamente que no lo dijeran a nadie y les mandó que le dieran de comer a la niña.

Aunque esta es una larga selección del Evangelio de Marcos, vale la pena leer y pasar tiempo en oración. La gente estaba aprendiendo del poder milagroso de Jesús para sanar y venían a Él desde todas las direcciones. Jairo, un funcionario de la sinagoga, cayó a los pies de Jesús y le pidió que sanara a su hija, que estaba muriendo. Cuando partieron hacia la casa de Jairo, mucha gente los siguió.
A pesar de que la multitud presionó a Jesús, sintió que alguien toco Su manto. ¿Cómo podría Él sentir un toque tan suave? Jesús sintió que el poder salía de Él. La mujer había aprovechado la oportunidad para tocar a Jesús, porque cualquiera que tocara sería “inmundo” según las leyes judías. Sin embargo, en lugar de volverse impuro, Jesús sanó a la mujer, que había estado sufriendo de hemorragias durante 12 años. Él le dijo que su FE la salvó.
En la ciudad de Magdala en Israel, la ciudad natal de Santa María Magdalena, hay una iglesia dedicada a las mujeres de la Biblia. Mientras Jesús curaba a la mujer con hemorragia, alguien llegó para decirle a Jairo que “su hija ya había muerto, entonces ¿para qué seguir molestando al Maestro?” Según la ley, si Jesús tocaba el cuerpo de la niña muerta, sería inmundo. Sin pánico, Jesús le dijo a Jairo: “No tengas miedo”. Solo ten FE.
¿Quién era Jairo? Jairo era un líder en la sinagoga, que sin duda había visto y oído hablar de los milagros asociados con Jesús. ¿Era Jairo un verdadero seguidor de Jesús, o era el padre judío desesperado de una niña moribunda de 12 años a la que no tenía a quién acudir sino a este Hombre Milagroso que afirmaba ser el Hijo de Dios?
La historia concluye cuando Jesús llegó a la casa de Jairo. Jesús preguntó: “¿Por qué esta conmoción y llanto? ¡La niña no está muerta sino durmiendo!” La gente que estaba en la casa ridiculizó a Jesús y se burló de Él. Los excusó a todos excepto a Sus tres amigos más cercanos; Pedro, Santiago y Juan, así como Jairo y su esposa. Entraron a la habitación y Jesús tomó a la niña de la mano y dijo “Talitha koum”, que significa “niña, ¡te digo que te levantes!” La niña que estaba muerta ahora estaba viva de nuevo. Es probable que Jairo cambiara de ser un curioso judío “fan de Jesús” a un creyente transformado y seguidor de Jesús a través del milagro que Nuestro Señor realizó a Su hija.
Jesús nos muestra que tiene poder para sanar y vencer incluso a la muerte misma. Cada uno de nosotros está pasando por momentos difíciles en nuestras vidas. Tal vez tu hijo está luchando contra la depresión o pensamientos suicidas. Tal vez tu matrimonio está en las rocas y te enfrentas a tentaciones difíciles. Tal vez no estés seguro de poder pagar sus cuentas o alimentar a tu familia. Debemos recordar que no hay nada que esté más allá del poder de Jesús. Y Él nos ofrece hoy esas mismas palabras reconfortantes, “No tengas miedo. Solo ten FE.”
Mientras leo estas historias de Jesús siendo inundado con personas que se acercan a Él, empujándolo, rogándole por sanación, no puedo dejar de pensar en los millones de personas que claman a Él diariamente. Nuestro Dios puede manejar todas nuestras necesidades. Él nos da a cada uno la atención personal que necesitamos, incluso si parece que Su respuesta es silenciosa. Eso está más allá de nuestro entendimiento; sin embargo, es por eso que Él es Dios y nosotros no.
Llamemos a Jesús hoy con lo que sea que esté en nuestros corazones. Si necesitamos sanación, extiende la mano para tocar Su manto. Si necesitamos un milagro, Él es quien puede hacerlo. Si necesitamos consuelo, Él es el Consolador. Tal vez hemos tenido cosas que nos han plagado durante 12 años o más. Parece que nada va a cambiar nunca. Vayamos a Jesús HOY con FE y busquemos Su sanación en nuestros corazones y en nuestras vidas. Recuerda: “No tengas miedo”. Solo ten FE.”
