"The Finale" is the two-part seĀriesā€…fiĀnale of the AmerĀiĀcan sitĀcom SeĀinĀfeld. They are the 179th and 180th episodes of the show and the 23rd and 24th episodes of the ninth seaĀson. It aired on NBC on May 14, 1998, to an auĀdiĀenceā€…ofā€…76ā€…milĀlionā€…viewĀers. Its iniĀtial runĀning time was 1 hour and 15 minutes.[1]
The fakeā€…workĀingā€…title for this show was "A Tough Nut to Crack" to throw off outĀsiders about the conĀtents of the episode.[2] For the final time and the first since the end of seaĀson seven, Jerry perĀforms a stand-up comĀedy rouĀtine. Larryā€…David, co-creĀator of the seĀries, who deĀparted from the seĀries after the sevĀenth seaĀson, reĀturned to write the script for this last episode.
The episode garĀnered strongly diĀvided reĀsponses upon airĀing, and conĀtinĀues to poĀlarĀize critĀics and auĀdiĀences.
Jerry and George have fiĀnally struck a deal with NBC to proĀduce their pilot Jerry as a seĀries, upon reĀceivĀing a call from ElizĀaĀbeth Clark callĀing from the ofĀfice of NBC PresĀiĀdent James KimĀbrough (Peterā€…Riegert). Jerry and George will be leavĀing New York City for CalĀiĀforĀnia to begin work. Jerry is given use of NBC's priĀvate jet by NBC exĀecĀuĀtives Jay Crespi and Stu CherĀmak as a courĀtesy and he, George, Elaine, and Kramer deĀcide to go to Paris for "one last hurĀrah". Elaine tries to get hold of her friend Jill. First, she can't get any reĀcepĀtion with her cell phone on the street. Then, Jerry inĀterĀrupts her with news of the pilot pickup and Elaine hangs up on Jill to take the call. Jerry then scolds her for tryĀing to rush the call beĀfore they all leave for Paris, and for thinkĀing about callĀing from the plane. On the plane that is piĀloted by CapĀtain MatĀtox and his co-piĀlot Kurt Adams, George and Elaine argue over the qualĀity of the plane and what Elaine conĀsidĀers an "efĀfemĀiĀnate" way in which George sits in the jet, while Kramer is still tryĀing to get water out of his ears from a trip to the beach he made earĀlier in the day.
Kramer's desĀperĀaĀtion to get the water out of his ears causes him to jump up and down on the plane and, as a reĀsult, he stumĀbles and falls into the cockĀpit, which causes the piĀlots to lose conĀtrol. While the plane is noseĀdivĀing, the four preĀpare for death. George, moĀmenĀtarĀily feelĀing the need to conĀfess, reĀveals he cheated in "Theā€…ConĀtest", and Elaine beĀgins to tell Jerry that she alĀways loved him; but the plane steadĀies itĀself and they make a safe emerĀgency landĀing in the ficĀtional small town of Latham, MassĀaĀchuĀsetts.
While waitĀing for the airĀplane to be reĀpaired, they witĀness an overĀweight man named Howie (Johnā€…Pinette) getĀting carĀjacked at gunĀpoint by a crimĀiĀnal (JefĀfery Thomas JohnĀson). InĀstead of helpĀing him, they crack jokes about his size while Kramer films it all on his camĀcorder, then proĀceed to walk away. The vicĀtim noĀtices this and tells the reĀportĀing ofĀfiĀcer Matt Vogel (Scottā€…Jaeck), who arĀrests them on a dutyā€…toā€…resĀcue viĀoĀlaĀtion that reĀquires byĀstanders to help out in such a sitĀuĀaĀtion.
BeĀcause this is the first case imĀpleĀmentĀing this law, they are adĀvised by the deputy to call a lawyer to repĀreĀsent them. Jerry and his friends do not have any choice but to call on Jackieā€…Chiles to repĀreĀsent them for the upĀcomĀing trial. DisĀtrictā€…AtĀtorĀney Hoyt (Jamesā€…RebĀhorn) hears that Jackie Chiles will be repĀreĀsentĀing Jerry and his friends and tells the prosĀeĀcuĀtor that he will find out everyĀthing about them.
Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer are in their cell havĀing their meal while awaitĀing the trial when Jerry's beeper goes off statĀing that their airĀplane is ready. GerĀaldoā€…Rivera and Janeā€…Wells cover the news about the trial of Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer. The peoĀple asĀsoĀciĀated with the main charĀacĀters are packĀing for the trial and headĀing to Latham. Jerry's parĀents Morty and Helen, George's parĀents Frank and EsĀtelle, NewĀman, Jerry's Uncle Leo, JaĀcopo "J." PeĀterĀman, David Puddy, Mickey Abbot, Kenny Bania, Susan Ross' parĀents, Rabbi GlickĀman, Keithā€…HerĀnanĀdez, and George SteinĀbrenĀner are among those shown makĀing their way to Latham. In adĀdiĀtion to these peoĀple, many othĀers from New York like Kramer's mother Babs Kramer and Matt WilĀhelm have made the trip to watch the trial in the courtĀroom. A lengthy trial enĀsues presided over by Judge Arthurā€…VanĀdeĀlay (StanĀleyā€…AnĀderĀson). George conĀsidĀers this to be a good sign as Arthur VanĀdeĀlay was one of the many fake names he used for himĀself and phony comĀpaĀnies he claimed to have worked for.
DisĀtrict AtĀtorĀney Hoyt starts his openĀing stateĀment that the deĀfenĀdants have igĀnored their Good SamarĀiĀtan Law and mocked the vicĀtim of a mugĀging. He also states that the deĀfenĀdants must pay for this crime. Jackie Chiles starts his openĀing stateĀment that this trial is a waste of the taxĀpayer's money, the deĀfenĀdants are inĀnoĀcent from byĀstandĀing, and that the real crimĀiĀnal is still out there.
DisĀtrict AtĀtorĀney Hoyt starts to ask a lot of witĀnesses in hopes to make Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer pay for breakĀing the duty to resĀcue law.
As the jury goes over the evĀiĀdence, GerĀaldo Rivera and Jane Wells recap to those watchĀing their show about what was heard durĀing the trial. Jane Wells even stated that the tesĀtiĀmonies went into the night until Judge VanĀdeĀlay has deĀcided that he has heard enough. It was also menĀtioned that the closĀing arĀguĀments have ocĀcurred and that the jury has been deĀlibĀerĀatĀing for four and a half hours. Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer hope that Jackie Chiles would get them acĀquitĀted. EsĀtelle enĀters Judge VanĀdeĀlay's ofĀfice in order to get him to reĀduce the punĀishĀment for her son if he is found guilty by doing someĀthing for him. Judge VanĀdeĀlay asks "What do you mean?" and EsĀtelle reĀsponds "You know."
EveryĀone else is seen killing time awaitĀing for the jury to be done:
The jury re-enĀters the courtĀroom. When Kramer claims that a woman on the jury is smilĀing at them, Jerry tells him that she's smilĀing at them beĀcause they might go to prison. EveryĀone rises when Judge VanĀdeĀlay enĀters the courtĀroom. When it comes to the verĀdict, the foreĀwoman of the jury (Myraā€…TurĀley) states that the jury finds Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer guilty of crimĀiĀnal inĀdifĀferĀence. Mr. and Mrs. Ross and the tesĀtiĀfiers are pleased with the verĀdict, EsĀtelle faints, and NewĀman has a brief chokĀing moĀment from laughĀing while eatĀing food. Judge VanĀdeĀlay breaks up the comĀmoĀtion by threatĀenĀing to clear the courtĀroom if they didn't stop.
He then tells to the four he does not know how, or under what cirĀcumĀstances they found each other, but their calĀlous inĀdifĀferĀence and utter disĀreĀgard for everyĀthing that is good and deĀcent has rocked the very founĀdaĀtion upon which soĀciĀety is built. He then senĀtences the four of them to spend a year in prison so that they can conĀtemĀplate the manĀner in which they have conĀducted themĀselves. Judge VanĀdalay adĀjourns the court and takes his leave from the courtĀroom as George anĀgrily quotes to Kramer "You had to hop! You had to hop on the plane!" As everyĀone starts to leave, Elaine tells David not to wait for her to which he inĀdifĀferĀently says "AlĀright." Frank tries to wake up EsĀtelle from her faintĀing so that they can beat the trafĀfic as Uncle Leo comĀforts Babs in the backĀground. BeĀfore leavĀing with Sidra, Jackie Chiles tells the four that he may have lost the case, but he did get satĀisĀfied with Sidra while comĀmentĀing "And by the way: they're real, and they're specĀtacĀuĀlar!"
In the final scene beĀfore the credĀits, the four main charĀacĀters sit in their holdĀing cell awaitĀing their prison transĀport. Kramer is fiĀnally able to get the water out of his ears after days of tryĀing. Elaine deĀcides that she's going to use her one phone call from prison to call Jill, sayĀing that the prison call is the "king of calls". Jerry beĀgins a conĀverĀsaĀtion about George's shirt butĀtons, using lines from theā€…firstā€…episode.[3] George then wonĀders if they've had that conĀverĀsaĀtion beĀfore, which Jerry acĀknowlĀedges.
DurĀing the credĀits at the Latham County Prison, Jerry is wearĀing a Latham County orĀange jumpĀsuit and perĀformĀing a stand-up rouĀtine of prison-reĀlated jokes to an auĀdiĀence of felĀlow prisĀonĀers. (inĀcludĀing Kramer and George; Elaine is not seen as she is in a women's prison) No one is laughĀing exĀcept for the stuĀdio auĀdiĀence and Kramer. As Jerry is then esĀcorted off the stage by a prisonā€…guard (Jon HayĀman) for talkĀing back at a heckĀler, he says to his auĀdiĀence of felĀlow prisĀonĀers, "Hey, you've been great! See you in the cafeĀteĀria!" as the auĀdiĀence jeers and Kramer gives him a standĀingā€…ovaĀtion, capĀping off the episode and the show.
The top price for a 30-secĀond comĀmerĀcial durĀing the U.S. broadĀcast was apĀproxĀiĀmately $1 milĀlion, markĀing the first time ever on AmerĀiĀcanā€…teleĀviĀsionā€…hisĀtory that a regĀuĀlar primeĀtime teleĀviĀsion seĀries (as well as a non-sport broadĀcast) had comĀmanded at least $1-milĀlion adĀverĀtisĀing rate (preĀviĀously atĀtained only by Superā€…Bowl genĀeral telecasts).[4]
In its origĀiĀnal AmerĀiĀcan broadĀcast, 76.3 milĀlion U.S. teleĀviĀsion viewĀers tuned into "The FiĀnale", beĀcomĀing the fourth most watched overĀall seĀries fiĀnale in the U.S. after M*A*S*H, Cheers and Theā€…FugiĀtive.[5] When this episode origĀiĀnally aired on NBC, TVā€…Land paid tribĀute by not proĀgramĀming any shows opĀpoĀsite it, inĀstead just showĀing a still shot of a closed ofĀfice door with a pair of handĀwritĀten notes that said "We're TV Fans so... we're watchĀing the last episode of SeĀinĀfeld. Will reĀturn at 10pm et, 7pm pt."[6]
AlĀthough the fiĀnale of SeĀinĀfeld enĀjoyed a huge auĀdiĀence durĀing the May 1998 teleĀcast, it reĀceived poĀlarĀized reĀviews and was critĀiĀcized by many for porĀtrayĀing the main charĀacĀters as peoĀple with noā€…reĀspectā€…forā€…soĀciĀety and for mockĀing the auĀdiĀence who tuned in to watch them every week. EnĀterĀtainĀmentā€…Weekly's Ken Tucker seemed to echo this senĀtiĀment in deĀclarĀing the episode "off-key and bloated...ā€‹Ultimately, SeĀinĀfeld and David's kiss-off to their fans was a loud, hearty, 'So long, suckers!'"[7]
AlĀthough Larry David has stated he has no reĀgrets about how the show ended,[8] a 2010 Time arĀtiĀcle noted that the SeĀinĀfeld reĀunion durĀing the sevĀenth seaĀson of Curbā€…Yourā€…EnĀthuĀsiĀasm "was viewed by many as his atĀtempt at a do-over."[8] This was also refĀerĀenced by Jerry in the sevĀenth-seaĀson fiĀnale of Curb Your Enthusiasm, sayĀing "We alĀready screwed up one fiĀnale" with David reĀspondĀing "we didn't screw up a fiĀnale, that was a good fiĀnale!" HavĀing said that, durĀing a SeĀinĀfeld roundĀtable reĀunion disĀcusĀsion, Larry adĀmitĀted to unĀderĀstandĀing the disĀapĀpointĀment and said if he were to redo it he would have kept the plot of the fiĀnale less of a seĀcret, which only heightĀened exĀpecĀtaĀtions.
In 2011, the fiĀnale was ranked No. 7 on the TVā€…Guideā€…NetĀwork speĀcial, TV's Most UnĀforĀgetĀtable Finales.[9]
In the final Topā€…Tenā€…List of the Lateā€…Showā€…withā€…Davidā€…LetĀterĀman, preĀsenĀter Juliaā€…Louis-DreyĀfus jokĀingly critĀiĀcized the episode by thankĀing LetĀterĀman for letĀting her take part in "anĀother hugely disĀapĀpointĀing seĀries fiĀnale", much to the faux chaĀgrin of felĀlow preĀsenĀter Jerryā€…SeĀinĀfeld, who had workĀshopped the joke with LetĀterĀman's writers.[10]
