I seriously doubt what happened was an accident. However, it would be interesting to pick their stories apart and find out what REALLY happened.
Don't infer anything when asking questions. Don't ask if the lights were off. Don't ask if they were drunk. Simply ask what happened. Start from the beginning and have them (SEPARATELY) explain, step-by-step what happened.
Look for signs of lying as well. Fidgeting hands. Excessive swallowing. Shifting in their chair or changing their proximity to you i.e. getting up or turning away from you.
It's easier to lie with the face and maintain good eye contact but the feet are harder to control. Watch for foot tapping and shifting.
Eventually ask direct questions like:
Observe their body language. Does their tonality change? Does their voice trail off at the end of their answer? In lie detection it's called leakage.
Stay still and observe. Watch more than listen. You'll hear what they say regardless. Focus more on their body language.
Have you ever thought about having sex with him/her?
Write down a list of similar questions and have at it. Video tape the interaction for a better analysis if possible.
Understand that women are generally BETTER at lie detection than men. If your gut tells you they're lying then they probably are and your perceiving it on a subconscious level.
