Abaza (абаза бызшва) Abaza is a North West Caucasian language spoken by about 45,000 people in the Russian autonomous republics of Karachay-Cherkessia and Adygea, and also in Germany, Turkey and the USA. It is fairly closely related to Abkhaz and is intelligible with it to some extent.
The Abkhaz and Abaza are ancient peoples of the Caucasus, speaking the languages of the Abkhaz-Adyghe group. Their history dates back thousands of years, going back to the Bronze Age. The name of the rebellion refers to Abaza Mehmet (or Abaza for short), an Ottoman pasha of Abkhazian origin. Sometimes, this event is considered as a part of the Jelali revolts.
