Ever since that officer knocked on my door, my life has been so strange. Of course, it was a shock for me to hear someone has knocked on my door from my maid. I was horrified when I saw who it was. This person that I've met on the train four days ago. If that badge wasn't on their person, I could've shut the door in their face. Now, a policeperson knows where I live and what I do. Curse my habit to boast when I'm tipsy.

"Weren't you on your way to Germany? Why did you change your mind?" I asked then, trying to put on my best smile."I—Well, I...Well, you were just so outstanding and your genius...your genius ideas, they..." They refused my offer for a chair and were standing instead, shaking and wobbling a little. Back then, a thought crossed my mind that they're incredibly pitiful."How did you get here, officer?""Ooh, how...how indeed...well, first I tried to ask around if any of my men knew you, yes. Then...then i realised it was foolish, and I decided to remember what you've told me about where you lived." Adler smiled for a moment there. Were they proud of themselves that much. "You said...That it's about five days from London, and you said there was a lake there, and when I asked you about the lake you also said that it was populated with fishermen. I believe you also said that it had a forest nearby, and that the wolves were bothering you, and i believe you also said that the terrain was somewhat unruly making it hard to go on walks...."As they kept listing off things i'd apparently told them, I started to doubt that. I have a tendency to boast, and i have a tendency to complain, surely, but even drunk, I could not have said this much."Is this how it was? You figured it out by all these offhand remarks?""Well, and maybe...and maybe I might have followed you on your way back. By pure coincidence, of course! I never intended to, I just wanted to return something!" They saluted. Why did they salute? That wasn't very clear to me. I couldn't help but tense up at the thought of losing something worth returning."A-and what might that be?" "Oh, wait, I...I wonder if it's safe...still..." They took off their hat and pulled a brooch out of it. It was a brooch i'd worn that day indeed. It had looked quite shabby before, and i didn't miss it when I found out it's gone. It was given to me by a person most unpleasant. "Oh no..." Adler sighed. "I tried to keep it safe, but it looks like it lost its charm." It looked exactly the same as the day when i received it. They surely seem to overestimate how charming it was before. "I'm sorry i couldn't keep it the same. You kept touching it while we talked, and I guessed it was a dear memento by the way you spoke of the person who gave it to you." They laid it on the table, looking deeply hurt by their own thought of breaking something I'd cherished. The officer was a very straightforward person, but for them to not guess I was not fond of the brooch seemed almost hilarious to me."Oh, I see..." I took the brooche into my hand. It still didn't look like a noteworthy piece of jewelry, even if the good officer took all this time just to deliver it to me. "Thank you. I was very worried about what happened to it." I took the brooch and pinned it to my lapel while thinking about how to dispose of it when the good officer leaves. Or maybe i'll just leave it to the maids. "Oh, and I also swept up all the leaves that were around the building...It just isn't right with all these dead leaves around the place where life is supposed to be preserved." They scratched the back of their head. The way they looked at me, it seemed earnest and genuine. Were they expecting praise? It puzzled me, but soon, this expression would burn itself into my retinas. "I only saw maids around your house, and I thought, why not help them? So I've been here for around seven hours. We're almost done!"Seven hours? They've been here for seven hours already and no one told me? That is surely something i should teach the maids about later."Oh, did you? The maids never mentioned you. Would you tell me which maids you gave a helping hand?"They raised their brows. "I never asked their names! But there was one with brown hair...and another one, with brown hair, and another one with red hair....three of them, i think."Great. All the maids have already seen them and reported to me only now. "Well, that is very generous of you, officer Miller..." I could only utter this, to not sound bitter."It's my duty as an officer to help people out! It wasn't very hard at all. Also, please, call me Adler, sir." They extended their hand to me for a handshake. I never returned it. They waited for a bit and then retracted it, and put their hat back on. "N—now. I'll better get back to the leaves." I saw them eyeing me for a moment before they went out the door, and I could see them working very hard to get rid of all the fallen autumn leaves.

"Why didn't you tell me about the officer?" I asked my maid, Clara, the moment I could get her to come. "We didn't know....we didn't know Adler was an officer. They were wearing... Simple clothes. Simple hair. We were grateful for the help, and then I saw them go off somewhere and come back to knock on your door."

I sighed. They were pretending to be a commoner?"No matter who the help is, you must always tell me who comes around. You know I don't like those who snoop around." I looked at her, she froze. "Keep them in good spirits if you don't want to be called an accomplice, will you?"

"U—understood."

It was morning. When I looked out of my window, I saw officer Adler again. Their hair, which was already not a pleasant side to behold, now had even more grime on it, and it was tied into a ponytail. They had the most simplistic clothes on, and their face was also stained with mud. I had my suspicions, but I can't entirely believe what I see. Just why would they pretend to do this? They're chatting with Clara in the yard, and for what reason? Why are they still here?

When Clara came to fetch me breakfast, I asked her. "Is our new friend still here?"

"New... Ah! You mean the officer. Yes. They are finding new chores to entertain themselves with. They're taking care of the flowers right now. Should I let them know they're unwelcome?" She said, as she placed the cup on the table.

"No, no, never, just...ask them to meet with me, won't you?" I shook my head.

"Hello, sir! Did you need me for something?" they saluted. Again. Now that I can see them up close, they seem almost charming. Their weird reddish eyes sparkling with such fervor, their embarrassing hairdo that loops back around to making them seem handsome and the clothes. They're... They're quite lean, actually. And their hands, they seem almost dainty like that. I wonder...

I cleared my throat. "I was just curious...where did you spend the night?"

"Oh, I just slept on the ground. No big deal! Is this everything you wanted to ask me?" Eager to get back to a chore. They're surely a weird person.

"On the ground? That cannot be good for your health in this cold autumn."

"I say, it's no big deal! Now..."

"Don't you have other duties to get back to as a servant of the people?"

That question seemed to send them into a stupour.

"Ah, no, not really! I'm just happy to help, that is all." they scratch the back of their neck. I cannot help it but notice they seem to be afraid of looking me in the eyes. That's good, at least. "I'll know when duty calls!"

Something in their earnest but humble smile made me stare at their mouth for far too long, before they said. "You don't mind that I'm helping the maids, right, sir? It's simply unfair that they have to do all this heavy work." Was Adler in love with one of the maids now? Well, that's just splendid. I cannot let them hang around any longer. And if the people notice... Or if adler notices the absence of said people, that meant serious trouble. I should send them away now.

"I appreciate your heartfelt concern for the wellbeing of my maids, but I assure you, they are capable of the tasks I assign to them. Wouldn't it be better if you went back to London and served the other civilians of our country as your calling demands?"

" Oh. Well...I suppose... But I'll visit! I'll definitely visit, if only to look at the new great masterpieces that are you'd artworks."

Im pretty sure I've never showed them any artworks.
