The River Avon, also known as the River Aune, is a river in the county of Devon in the southwest of England. It rises in the southern half of Dartmoor National Park in an area of bog to the west of Ryder's Hill. Close to where the river leaves Dartmoor a dam was built in 1957 to form the Avon reservoir (see Dartmoor reservoirs). After leaving the moor it passes through South Brent and then Avonwick and Aveton Gifford and flows into the sea at Bigbury-on-Sea. Near Loddiswell the valley flows through Fosse Copse a 1.88 hectares (4.65 acres) woodland owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. The estuary lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is part of the South Devon Heritage Coast. From 1893 until its closure in 1963, the Kingsbridge branch line railway line ran along the valley of the Avon between Kingsbridge and South Brent.

South Hams is a local government district on the south coast of Devon, England. Its council is based in the town of Totnes, although the largest town is Ivybridge. The district also contains the towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe and numerous villages and surrounding rural areas. Much of the district's landscape is recognised for its natural beauty; the north of the district includes part of Dartmoor National Park, the district's coastline and adjoining areas form most of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and part of the west of the district lies within the Tamar Valley AONB. The district's coast includes the promontories of Start Point and Bolt Head. The neighbouring districts are Torbay, Teignbridge, West Devon, Cornwall (across the Tamar–Tavy Estuary) and Plymouth.

Aveton Gifford is a small rural village in the south of the English county of Devon. It lies at the head of the estuary of the River Avon or Aune, at the point where it is crossed by the A379 road. It receives its name from this river and also from the family of Giffard who held the manor. Walter Giffard came across with William the Conqueror and helped with the Domesday Book. The village is located in the South Hams district of Devon and is bounded by Modbury, Bigbury, Thurlestone, Churchstow and Loddiswell. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 772, rising to 833 at the 2011 census. There is currently a pub, a community village shop/post office, a primary school, a pre-school and a selection of parish organisations. The village is a major part of the electoral ward of Charterlands. This ward also includes Bigbury. Its population at the abovementioned census was 1,951.

2015 South Hams District Council election
Elections to South Hams District Council took place on 7 May, the same day as other United Kingdom local elections and the General Election. 19 of the 20 wards were up for election, each with either 1, 2 or 3 councillors to be elected. The number of seats up for election in each ward is indicated by the number in the brackets following the ward name. This was the first election with new boundary changes taking effect after the number of wards was reduced by ten and councillors by 9. The ward of Salcombe & Thurlestone was uncontested, with Conservative Party candidates Judy Pearce and Simon Wright elected. The Conservative Party increased their share of seats in the council, despite a slight decrease in votes. Meanwhile, the Green Party overtook the Liberal Democrats to become the largest opposition party.
