Born in Bandung on 19 September 2005, Cesare Valerius Arvid grew up in a family where preserving history was woven into everyday life. His father, Raka Hadiatmadja, an Indonesian structural engineer, devoted his career to restoring aging buildings across the country, while his Dutch mother, Helena van Rijn, worked as a museum conservator specializing in wooden artifacts and historical collections.

Much of Arvid's childhood unfolded inside Oude Werkplaats, a modest woodworking shop founded in 1978 by his grandfather, Johannes Willem van Rijn. Rather than producing new furniture, the workshop became known for restoring damaged cabinets, antique tables, and heirloom pieces that had quietly accompanied generations of families. Johannes believed every object deserved respect; not because of its value, but because it had witnessed someone's life.

Instead of teaching Arvid to build immediately, Johannes first taught him how to observe. He learned to recognize timber by its grain, sharpen chisels before making the first cut, and understand that patience mattered more than speed.

When Johannes passed away, Oude Werkplaats closed its doors. For nearly a year, the workshop remained untouched.

One afternoon, Arvid returned alone.

After graduating from high school, he entered the Faculty of Architecture, specializing in Heritage Conservation and Adaptive Reuse. While many of his classmates dreamed of designing skylines, Arvid found himself drawn toward restoring buildings that already carried stories.

Eventually, he reopened the workshop under a new name:

Oude Atelier.
