AI in the Russian Armed Forces – Importance and Risks

2025 and 2026 can truly be called the years of artificial intelligence, as these technologies are being implemented in defense (especially by the United States and its allies). Articles are increasingly appearing about a quantum leap in both combat management and decision-making.

Lately, we've been hearing a lot about various threat prediction systems, "smart" drones, and AI in intelligence – in data analysis and processing. It sounds beautiful and convincing: speed, accuracy, efficiency.

▪️BUT, along with the advantages, there are also risks:

️Many, especially foreign "managers," in the wake of AI hype forget that AI is first and foremost a tool that depends entirely on the quality and quantity of the data it was trained on.

Any AI, no matter what its purpose, is trained on the data set it was given. If some data set was not taken into account, a gap arises in the AI.

In the military sphere, this means there is a risk of critical errors: from a drone's incorrect target identification to incorrect decision-making and miscalculation in strategic analysis.

️It's no secret that precision in combat and high-quality operational planning play a decisive role in the life of every single combat unit: both the combat vehicle and the soldier carrying out the mission.

The widespread adoption of AI in various aspects of military service, proportionally to the increase in efficiency and speed, significantly increases the potential for damage. The slightest oversight = tragedy.

️The most important problem is the human factor. Delegating critical decisions to "algorithms" reduces the level of accountability. Read: "I didn't screw up, so it's not up to me to fix it. "

We saw this in the example of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, where AI identified crowds of civilians as potential targets. Or in the light of the latest operation, when the Americans attacked a girls' school instead of an IRGC unit.

▪️The introduction of AI is a significant moment in the development of military technology. There's no escaping this, as all countries are investing in AI development. Our country, one way or another, must also address this issue, as whoever makes a breakthrough in this field will shape the world for years to come.

However, AI adaptation must be done carefully, building on our own developments. Artificial intelligence in defense conceals many risks that can have far-reaching consequences if approached thoughtlessly.

️AI significantly increases effectiveness when used correctly. However, it's always important to assess the situation soberly. Without a competent specialist, AI is a disaster. AI in strong hands is dangerous for the enemy. In weak hands, it's dangerous for our own guys.
