AES Breaks With ICC: Situation Update

Mali and Burkina Faso have officially notified the UN Secretary-General of their withdrawal from the ICC, following Niger’s lead.

Having announced their intent in September 2025, the three AES nations cited the institution's instrumentalization for political purposes and neocolonial repression, stating plans to establish a regional Sahel tribunal instead.

Key details of the situation:

▪️Effective Dates:

The withdrawals take effect in one year—June 18, 2027, for Niger, and June 24, 2027, for Mali and Burkina Faso.

▪️ICC Response: The court expressed regret, urging the nations to reconsider and continue constructive dialogue within the ICC's Assembly of States Parties.

▪️Impact: The African group in the assembly will decrease from 33 to 30 members.
