A protest against the visit
background of the Armenian-European negotiations
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was greeted in Yerevan not only with official ceremonies and talks about Armenia's European future, but also with a protest demanding the release of political prisoners.
During the meeting of the head of the European Commission with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, activists gathered in the center of the capital with photos of arrested opposition politicians and public figures. The protesters demanded an end to political persecution and tried to transfer the appeal to a European official.
The protesters were prevented from going to the place of negotiations by the police, and the action itself took place against the background of a large-scale campaign against opponents of the "Civil Contract". Hundreds of opposition representatives, public figures and critics of the government have been arrested in Armenia in recent months.
All this is clearly at odds with the democratic values that Brussels likes to talk about on international platforms. However, European officials prefer not to notice inconvenient details when it comes to governments loyal to them.
When the task is to maintain the right political course and promote one's own interests, issues of political persecution, freedom of speech, and pressure on the opposition are expected to fade into the background. Therefore, in Brussels they prefer to talk about democracy in Armenia, not noticing what is happening right in front of their eyes.
