A number of Activists in and out of Iran Appeal to Javid Rahman for Urgent Action to Release Political Prisoners in Iran
Mr. Javid Rahman, 2020-03-07
As a result of the widespread Corona virus epidemic in Iran we need urgently to bring your attention to the alarming situation of prisoners of conscience in Iran.
In accordance with ICCPR adequate or appropriate and timely medical care must be provided to all detainees as part of state duties to ensure the enjoyment by all persons of the rights under article 6, 7 and10 of the ICCPR.
Furthermore, The Nelson Mandela Rules stresses the overriding principle that all prisoners shall be treated with respect due to their inherent dignity and value as human being and be protected from torture and other cruel or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It is however with great regret that we note, despite Iran being a state party to the ICCPR and in its absence of objection to the Nelson Mandela Rule, the continuing violations of Human Rights by the Islamic republic of Iran with regards to prisoner’s right to health care and medical treatment. Deprivation of health care and medical treatment is widely used by the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a method to force confessions and torture and has now escalated according to our sources from within the Prisons. The prisoners are systematically being denied timely and appropriate medical care and considering many of the prisoners already deteriorating health due to systematic tortures, medical maltreatments and hungerstrikes, theseindividuals are at high risk for being infected with Covid-19 and are at high mortality risk.
Mohammad Nourizads health situation has deteriorated severely and Henganeh Shahidi, Nazanin Zaghari, SepidehFarahan, Abbas Vahedian Shahroodi, Dr. Kamal Jaafari Yazdi, Absolrasoul Mortazavi, Mohammad Hossein Sepehri, Fatemeh Sepehri, Mehdi Mahdavifar, Hashem Khastar, Reza Mehregan, Javad-Laal-Mohammadi, Soheil Arabi, ArashSadegh, Zeinab Jalaian and Samaneh Nouroozi Moradiaffected by cancer disease, Sepideh Kashani & NiloofarBayani two environmental activists, Esmail Abdi head of the teacher association of Iran, Mohammd Habibi are all prisoner of conscience, diagnosed with severe medical conditions, suffering life-threatening diseases, all being continuously denied medical treatment as well as torture as a means to coerce public confessions.
The aforementioned prisoners as well as Rouholla Zam, AmirHossein Moradi with Coronavirus, Saeid Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi, and more than 1500 prisoners of conscience part of the most recent political movement of AbanMah Movement (November 2019 protests in Iran), are all systematically deprived of their universal human rights, right to health care and imminent treatment.
We hereby urge you to take prompt action against the Islamic republic of Iran and hold the Iranian government responsible for their actions against the international human rights treaties and call upon the Islamic Republic of Iran to, effective immediate, release all prisoners of conscious and secondly to cease the continuing violations against human rights and ensure the universality and indivisibility of all human rights.
Yours faithfully,
Bahar Malavan Naryndji,
International Human rights Lawyer and previous UN-delegate
