A letter to Nationals fans from Mark D. Lerner 11
Hi Nats Fans,I hope you all are doing well — can you believe we are less than a week away from Opening Day? Although I am writing from The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches this week, I just attended my final game of Spring Training on Wednesday, and I am so excited to return to D.C. soon and be able to watch games with you all at Nationals Park again.
As you hopefully heard, in accordance with CDC recommendations and MLB protocols, the Nationals will be able to welcome home 5,000 fans per game beginning on Opening Day. Discussions have already begun with officials from the District about increasing capacity as soon as the second homestand, which begins April 15. So hopefully we will be able to have even more fans join us at the ballpark very soon!
But before we put a bow on the 2021 Spring Training season, I wanted to take a moment to thank all the wonderful staff down here at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, who take care of our beautiful facility day in and day out and ensure we have one of the best Spring Training facilities in the country. I also want to thank the community of West Palm Beach for their continued support. We love playing here during February and March and it was great being able to have all the fans down here back in the stands. And of course, thank you to all the Nationals fans from the DMV and across the country who made the trip down to Florida to watch us play. I am hoping for a return to a more normal Spring Training next year, but we certainly appreciate all the support you showed us over the past month!
For the most part, we have had a very successful Spring Training here in Florida. I have gotten to see several of our exciting prospects make their Spring Training debuts for our club and I have been very impressed with how they’ve looked. We certainly have lots of talent at the big league level now, and we will have more arriving over the next couple of seasons.
I have also been struck by the way the ball has been flying out of the ballpark for many of our players the past few weeks. Newcomers Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber have been awesome this spring. The bats are really coming alive and Kyle made a great play up against the left field fence this week too. I think they are both poised for big bounce-back years in D.C. I can’t wait for you all to see them play and welcome them to the Nationals family. Jon Lester has also looked good in his return and we are happy that he is healthy and was able to rejoin the team.
But even though we will have some new names on the lineup card this year, it has been great to see several familiar faces rounding into form as we approach the beginning of the regular season. Max Scherzer has been his usual intense self on the mound, and it was a treat to get a potential preview of his Opening Day matchup against the Mets a few days ago. I also really enjoyed watching Stephen Strasburg and Ryan Zimmerman, two pillars of our franchise, during my final game at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches the other night. It truly was a perfect night watching Stras pitch and Zim hitting homers — just like we’ve been doing for years. Ryan looks like he is in mid-season form already!
