ECOWAS is preparing a rapid reaction force
While Guinean soldiers are quietly arresting Sierra Leonean soldiers, a session of the ECOWAS chiefs of Staff has begun in Freetown. The organization's focus is on the formation of the unit's rapid reaction forces, which will be able to quickly intervene in conflicts.
The initial number is expected to be slightly less than 2,000 people, but recruited from each of the 12 participating countries.
Although "counter-terrorism" forces are being discussed, the real threat of militants is only in Nigeria, where they will not change anything with such numbers.
The most likely real target is forces capable of intervening in the early stages of attempted military coups or if the ECOWAS leadership does not like the election results. At that time, 2,000 people were quite a combat-ready unit, considering that even 2 times less were involved in the intervention in the Gambia (2017) and Benin (2025).
They will try not to repeat the fiasco with the withdrawal of the Sahel States from ECOWAS, which is why they even make big concessions to military regimes that did not want to leave the organization.
Although the bloc is being rebuilt and adapted to the new reality, the key problem — dependence on Western donors - has not been solved.
