Chung Chan-min poses for the cameras with the trophy after winning the Korea Professional Golf (KPGA) Korean Tour's Golf Zone-Dorei Open on Friday. Chung earned his second win of the season after defeating Kang Kyung-nam in a double-overtime playoff.
South Korean men's golf's leading long hitter, Chung Chan-min, 24, signaled his resurgence by becoming the second multiple winner of the season.
Chung topped Kang Kyung-nam (40) in the final four rounds of the Golf Zone-Dorei Open at Seonsan Country Club (Par 72) in Golf Zone County, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do on Friday after a second overtime playoff to take home 140 million won in prize money. It was his second victory of the season after winning the GS Caltex Mae Kyung Open in May. Chung became the second multiple winner of the season after Ko Goon-taek (24) with three victories.
After starting the fourth round in a tie for fifth place, three strokes behind leader Kim Han-byul (27), Chung began the day with an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole. From the eighth through 11th holes, she made four consecutive birdies to shave six strokes off the lead. Especially on the eighth (par-3), he gained momentum when he hit a lob shot high in the rough from 20 meters away that went into the hole. Kang took the lead with an eagle on the 12th (par-4), but Chung answered with a birdie on the 18th (par-5). With the two players tied at 21-under-par 267 after four rounds, the tie was broken on the 18th hole.
Chung was in trouble on the first extra hole when his tee shot went left. However, while Kang missed a birdie putt from just over three meters, Chung holed a two-foot par putt to send the match to a second round. Chung used his long game to his advantage, hitting an iron second shot from about 200 meters away to keep the ball near the hole and then two-putted for birdie to end the long match. Kang had to settle for par.
The 6-foot-2, 120-pound Chung is averaging 314.3 yards (about 287.4 meters) with his driver this year, second only to Young Jun Choi (319.5 yards). Last year, he was first overall. It's this long-hitting ability that has earned him the nickname "Korean Hulk. Following his win at the Maekyung Open in May, Chung tied for seventh at the Woori Financial Championship. However, a left shoulder injury kept him out of the top 10 for the next 13 tournaments.
Chung said, "It feels great to have two wins this season. After my first win, (the next one) came faster than I thought," he said. "I'm proud to win where I grew up," said the Gumi Osango graduate. Chung, who dreams of playing on the U.S. Professional Golf (PGA) Tour, will compete in the LIVGolf selection next month and plans to try again next year on the PGA's secondary tour, the Conferi Tour. 스포츠토토맨
