A Sudbury organization called No Casino Sudbury is trying to win enough public support from locals to halt the C$60 million project
Casino opponents are arguing a lot about the new casino project, and they want to be able to present the shortcomings of attracting casinos and discuss their concerns.
This Wednesday evening, the anti-casino group held its first public hall meeting at St Andrews Place. More than 70 people attended the meeting to listen to the group's position on the issue, ask questions or share personal experiences. Ruby Rujid Harvey, who runs her own business and is also behind the group, explained that the number of supporters continues to grow and has five times more support than the current petition presented by No Casino Toronto, which is also an anti-casino group against the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) modernization plan.
Why Sudburians Are Opposed To Gateway's Proposal To Build Casino
Among other things, No Casino Sudbury, an anti-casino group, pointed out that it was inappropriate to have casinos in a family-oriented city, and Gateway plans to build a top gambling complex on Kingsway, right next to City Arena, a family-oriented amenity, the group said Congress should reconsider its decision.
Finally, No Casino Sudbury explained that the existence of casinos will cause many social problems and negatively affect the local economy. The group added that the city is not a tourist destination and that the casino's main visitors are expected to be locals. Casino Free Sudbury is another casino movement led by business owner Tom Potin that increases gambling losses, meaning people spend less at local restaurants, it added.
As may be recalled, Gateway Casino & Entertainment, a major gambling operator in Canada, announced plans to replace its worn-out slots in Sudbury Downs with a full-scale gambling facility, or non-gambling amenities. The move follows Gateway's acquisition of assets in the North Gaming Bundle, which includes casinos in Sudbury Downs and Thunder Bay and Salt Ste.
