Motorcycle School - How to Pass a Driver's License Test

Completion of a safety course for motorcycles typically eliminates the need to take the driver's license test. The course will teach you to anticipate the movements of other drivers and to keep a safe following distance and to ride at a safe level.

The classroom instruction as well as the riding time are included in the course. Be punctual. Late arrivals could disrupt the course schedule.

Classroom Instruction

The MSF Basic Rider Course is the perfect course for anyone who wants to learn to ride a motorcycle or scooter. This class provides classroom instruction and actual training for motorcycle/scooter operators in a controlled, off-street environment. The BRC is designed for beginners and can help you avoid the MVC road test. It also teaches street tactics, including maximum braking effectiveness and maneuvering in tight spaces and passing, lane changes and avoiding hazards.

The 5-hour ePackage I (eP1) can be completed either as a stand-alone program or as an introduction to BRC's hands on portion. The eCourse contains interactive lessons, video clips and graphics that let you learn the fundamentals of motorcycling. Insurance discounts could be available to you upon successful completion of the course.

The ePackage 1 must be completed in 30 days from the start date of your BRC course to earn an award and take part in the riding skill evaluation. If recommended you read cannot be completed, no refund will be granted. To take part in the hands-on BRC, participants must have an VALID driver's license.

The CLASS program is a 2 day riding class which allows you to improve your riding skills in the safety and security of a riding setting on a street legal scooter or motorcycle provided by the school. The class is taught by MSF Certified Instructors. The emphasis is on enhancing your confidence, skills, and understanding of the motorcycle/scooter operating systems. The class is comprised of classes along with riding exercises and a ride-skills assessment.

The course is based on the wisdom of three time AMA Superbike Champ Reg Pridmore and his hand selected team of instructors. Their philosophies are the result of 50 years of riding and racing as well as teaching. The concepts are explained in a simple language to make them easy to understand and implement. The result is a better rider who is more confident, proficient and more secure.

Practice Range

A large portion of your motorcycle training will be held at a practice field, where you can refine and test your riding abilities in a controlled setting. The site is generally closed to traffic so you can practice safely. Your RiderCoach will walk you through the basics of techniques and controls of your motorcycle before sending you out on the range. At the end of every session on the range, your RiderCoach will score you on five skill assessment exercises that cover limited-space maneuvers, braking and cornering. If you complete the riding-skills test you will be awarded the BRC Road Test Waiver Completion Card (a license waiver).

It's important to bring your motorcycle safety gear to classYour RiderCoach will provide helmets for students who don't own them, but be sure to wear a DOT-approved helmet. Wear long pants made of a non-flare fabric, full-fingered gloves, ankle-high boots or shoes, and eye protection.

You will spend approximately five hours in a class studying your motorcycle before you can ride it on the track. After that the instructor will help you develop your riding skills by instructing you through straight-line riding as well as turning and shifting, and gradually progressing to more complicated maneuvers, like emergency brakes and swerving. The course will conclude with a final riding-skill evaluation, after which you'll receive a completion certificate and potentially be eligible for a discount on your motorcycle insurance.

In many states, a motorcycle safety course is required to get a license. Find out from your local DMV to determine if an approved course or recommendation is required. Join a Motorcycle Safety Foundation approved program. This could be used to waive the road test administered by the DMV.

The MSF's Basic RiderCourse is designed for novices and can be completed at various locations throughout the country. The course combines five hours of classroom instruction with 10 hours on a bike. It is the quickest way to obtain a motorcycle licence and may also qualify you for an insurance discount.

Feedback from Instructors

"The instructors were very knowledgeable and professional. They care about their students and it shows. They will teach you the fundamentals of riding a motorbike. I highly recommend this course to any rider of any age or experience."

The classroom instruction was thought provoking and informative. The riding instruction was a combination of both theory and practice, but the most memorable part was the instructor feedback. They didn't simply say "OK" however, they gave you the reasons why you did it wrong. For example, "You looked down at the handlebars", "You gave it too many gas", "Your wrists are bent", "You shifted too early" or "You weren't putting pressure on your foot peg". Then they explained to you how to repair it.

This kind of individual coaching is what you pay for in a high-quality training course and it is what separates this class from many other classes. Some riders might think that this is too harsh however my view is that it's imperative to give the student the best chance of passing the test and staying safe on a bike.

I've been to other classes in the past and there was no individual feedback from the instructor. There's no reason that instructors should have the final say in whether a student passes an exam unless they're clearly threatening or hindering others in the group.

In my opinion, any motorsports school that doesn't provide personal coaching is missing a key element of its curriculum. It isn't worthy of the praise it receives in student reviews. Beginning with the Basic RiderCourse then pursuing private lessons is the most effective way to get up and running safely and quickly. That way you can learn from a professional and avoid making mistakes, and begin your journey with confidence and a set of skills that will serve you well for a lifetime of riding enjoyment. Graduates of a RiderCourse are exempt from the written and riding endorsement tests in most states. Certain insurance companies offer discounts to riders who have completed a course.

Final Exam

During the second half of the course, you'll learn about road skills, such as braking and accelerating changing gears, turning, and turning and swerving. This part of the class is held until you are able to be able to pass a riding skill evaluation. This part of the course is what will determine if you receive your motorcycle license road test waiver card. The evaluation will include maneuvers that the DMV driver examiner will be looking for during your license test. It's fine if you don't pass the test. Be prepared to take it again the next time and continue to work hard.

If you pass the exam your instructor will issue you a certificate of course completion which you can use to obtain a motorcycle insurance discount. You are now a certified motorcyclist, and you can legally ride your motorcycle on the streets.

The MSF 3-wheel BRC is a research-based, action-oriented program designed to teach novice 3-wheel motorcyclists of all ages the physical and mental abilities required to safely ride on the street. The 3-WBRC provides instruction in the classroom as well as two full days of training on motorbikes specifically designed to train. Successful completion of this course allows you to get a NYS DMV road test waiver for operating three-wheeled motorcycles only.

Students must have an approved motorcycle helmet from the Department of Transportation and be at minimum 16 years old. Before starting class, a parent or guardian is required to sign a New York State Covid Release Waiver and indemnification form when the student is younger than 18. Eye protection and sturdy riding clothes are highly recommended. Helmets can be borrowed or you can bring them along with you.

To receive your certificate of completion of your motorcycle course You must complete the five-hour ePackage 1 online course.
