i'm about 70% through this and i'm liking it lots. there are a few things that stopped me dead in the water when i got to them. these small mistakes i would expect from a novice writer, but not from RL. the 1st was : a operation for ulcers??? really? when i came upon that i wondered if it was set in pre y2k era. it's not, it's present tense, as in 2012. the 2nd: the FBI doing witness relocation covers. this is done by the us marshals. the FBI may guard someone before they turn states, but not after; and the 3rd is the most difficult for me to forgive him for: the passage reads: he engaged the safety on the colt commando revolver. the number of revolvers that have a manual safety are so small he wrote about it in "walking the cat back": all of the revolvers that do have a manual safety are euro military officer's models that are of antiquated calibers, extremely rare and would only be found in a museum or a avid gun collectors possession. the rest of the book is as good as any he's written. if the above were not written as they were in the era that they are and if he'd have simple said the colt commando he would have gotten a pass on that. he would have gotten the max number of stars. most would not know about the handgun, but robert littell really should.

I have been a fan of Robert Littell's work since his first book. His intricate plots, his knowledge of intelligence successes and failures, his deft skewering of both American and foreign intelligence policies, and the high quality of his writing have always intrigued me, and when I saw this book coming being offered before publication, I immediately signed up for it and read it as soon as it appeared. Upon finishing the work I had one question for the author: who are you and what have you done with Robert Littell? Perhaps the author grew tired of his US-Soviet Union plots, but this story of a burnt-out and disgraced former CIA agent who was kicked out of Afghanistan and lives in trailer in New Mexico trying to make a living as private investigator took my completely by surprise. It involves marginal types who live in and around the desert, stereotypical Mafia families, and some local police and FBI agents. The plot is adequately done, the main character is kind of interesting, and on its own merits it is an OK story. But it is worlds away from even the weakest of Littell's previous work. If another Littell book comes out in the future, I'll wait and read the reviews before I purchase it, instead of going on the author's reputation. If you are looking for a continuation of the author's previous oeuvre, this is NOT it.

I bought this on the strength of a rave review on NPR, and I almost feel like the reviewer and I read two different books. (We definitely didn't.) The book seems to be intended as almost an affectionate send-up or tribute to hard-boiled detective fiction...but it was just _bad_. The writing is heavy-handed and simplistic, but never to a level that reaches parody, or artful elevation. The characters are ridiculous caricatures, whose idiosyncrasies don't even make _sense_. (For example, one of the most annoying aspect of the whole book has to the premise that the main character is somehow (a) a former crack field agent, who can recognize the make and model of special-forces night goggles from a distance, but also (b) a crotchety old Luddite who can't use a browser or a smartphone, and keeps making insanely stupid references to things like "that Googly search locomotive, or engine, or something that everyone's talking about nowadays".) Top that all off with an entirely predictable plot twist that was so heavy-handed that I didn't even realize it was supposed to be a _surprise_ until it was "revealed" with a huge flourish at the end of the book. Trust me -- if you didn't figure it out till the end, you are _not_ paying attention. Anyway -- thoroughly disappointing. I know Littell has a very good reputation, and I'd be willing to read other books of his, but this one doesn't cut it for me.

Great vacation story. Read cover to cover over 3 days including one stint from 1-3am when I just wanted to spend more time inside the story. When normal novels neatly wrap up all the loose ends and wave goodbye, this one, in a risky seemingly all downside no upside move, tags on a "lets wrap up the story behind the story" chapter that I almost hesitated to read. It's the place that pretty good authors go to die, because almost invariably it involves a stout wheel of cheese that brings together the story's Barbie and Ken dolls for a shameless and tasteless Hollywood finish. Oh, but not this author and not this book. What we get is a much more realistic and heart rending bit of real life, told in words that need to be read. Undoubtedly this novel will have me trolling for prior Littell works, since this was my first foray into his world and a very rewarding one, at that.

I had seen Robert Littell books in airport book shops for years and therefore knew he was quite popular but I had never read him , but the other day I saw an interview with him on French TV . The very idea that this reporter/staff writer for Newsweek had the guts to quit his job as soon as he had saved enough money to put a down payment on a small house in the South of France and has been able to make a good living writing pulp fiction ever since , I felt I had to read his latest . It was an engaging good yarn .

It was impossible to like the main character

This was the poorest novel ever published from Robert Littell. The plot was ridiculous. It was impossible to like the main character. It was poorly written and full of repeated American phrases that only served to irritate the reader. Don't waste your money on this one or even your time if you are given a copy.

A Change of Pace

After years of writing serious spy novels, (Young Philby, The Company) Littell has turned his talents to lighter fare. Involving an ex CIA agent, turned private eye, turned skip tracer, a beautiful bail bondswoman and an elusive crook they're both chasing, the writing combines action, sex , suspense and snappy dialogue, much along the lines of Jon A Jackson's Detective Mulheisen series. For those looking for a quick, entertaining read, look no farther.

A Good Piece Of Tale-Telling

Very workmanlike thriller from a master of the form. Littel examines a mystery from the point of view of a rugged and bloody-minded outsider, and takes us to a satisfactory denouement. The twist in the tale is a little obvious, which is why this gets 4, rather than 5, stars.

Another compulsive read

I like Robert Littell in general, especially his mix of serious issues and humor. This novel didn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

A pleasant read which took some time to get up momentum. At times, the writing style is glib,a most a Raymond Chandler wannabe.

Former CIA agent Lemuel Gunn left the battlefield of Afghanistan for early retirement in the desert of New Mexico, where he works as a private investigator from the creature comforts, such as they are, of a mobile home. Into his life comes Ornella Neppi, a thirty-something woman making a hash out of her uncle's bail bonds business. The source of her troubles, Emilio Gava, was arrested for buying cocaine. Ornella has reason to believe he is planning to jump bail. Unless she can find him, her uncle is going to be $125,000 out of pocket. For $95-a-day plus expenses (not to mention the pleasure of her company), Gunn agrees to help Ornella track the wayward suspect down. Curiously, no photographs of Gava seem to exist. Once Gunn begins his manhunt, he starts to wonder whether Gava himself existed in the first place. Robert Littell has been widely praised as one of the best espionage writers of our time.
