Anna Yuzhakova takes her laptop computer with her to the restaurant car. She wants to show her international visitor the many charms of Siberian beauties. They are the result, she says, of years of mixed marriages by citizens from different republics of the former Soviet Union.
Anna is a scout. She discovers new talents for the Noah Models agency in St. Petersburg.
She is herself a former model. Four times a year she crosses her native region by train searching for the next top models, the ones who will one day strut the catwalks of Paris or New York.
Her travelling companion, Stephane Hababou, watches the photos of would-be models scroll across the screen. He’s also a scout. He represents the prestigious Marilyn agency in Paris.
It’s his first trip to Siberia. Hababou says it’s the best way for him to find new prospects ahead of his competition.
There’s not a moment to waste. Anna and Stephane stop in every large city of the region, holding a casting call that is open to all.
About 50 teen girls in black undergarments and stiletto heels greet Anna and Stephane at every stop. Some move nervously. Others proudly show off their curves.
The presence of this visitor from Paris ramps up the pressure. Everyone knows Hababou holds the key to a possible career abroad. It’s an opportunity to follow both an American and French dream, a chance to escape the daily drudgery of life in Siberia.
Anna invites Marina Korotkova to step forward. The 17-year-old barely has the time to take two steps before a cutting remark welcomes her into the world of modelling, even if pronounced under the guise of humour. “Marina is a little overweight.” At 93 centimetres, her hips are too wide. The visitors still take a few photos and recommend she go on a diet.
Russia’s largest modelling school is in Novosibirsk. It’s a unique breeding ground for girls who start training as early as age 10 or 12. They learn fashion photography techniques and how to sway their hips on a catwalk.
Fifteen-year-old Kristina Churina, a recent graduate, catches Stephane Hababou’s eye. If she loses a little weight, she could end up in Paris within the year, modeling the creations of top designers.
But few are chosen. Anna selects about 30 young women during each of her Siberian scouting trips. Only a fraction of them will ever end up with real modelling careers.
To be ready to seize the opportunity if presented with it, Kristina has been taking intensive English courses. She also has a plan B. She’s studying tourism and hopes to one day manage a large hotel.

Siberia is known around the world for its frigid temperatures. But in the world of fashion, the region is famous for being home to the most beautiful women in the world.
The measuring tape is king. Minimum height: 172 centimetres (5 feet, 6 inches). Maximum hips: 90 centimetres (35.4 inches).
Casting calls are open to all and attract about 60 hopeful young women every time they are held.
The measuring tape is unforgiving. With hips measuring 93 centimetres (36.6 inches), Marina Korotkova is considered “a little fat.”
Stephane Hababou, from the Marilyn agency in Paris, has come to Siberia to find the most promising beauties before his rivals do.
Anna Yuzhakova (centre), herself a former model, visits Siberia four times a year on behalf of the Noah modeling agency in St. Petersburg.
Anna discovers 30 to 40 fresh and interesting faces every month.
Anastasia Akhmameteva catches the eye of Stephane Hababou. Her ticket to Paris is within reach.
For the ones left behind, the rejection is often brutal.
15-year-old Kristina Churina just graduated from Novosibirsk’s modelling school and has caught the attention of the Paris agency.
But Stephane Hababou hesitates about Kristina: “If she loses weight, we’ll see see how she changes.”
Siberia is considered a modelling reservoir, thanks to ethnic mixing.
A little powder, and barely pubescent girls turn into femmes fatales.
A fashion show after the casting call allows scouts to observe the models in real conditions.
For many young women from small villages, modelling offers a chance to travel and earn a lot of money.

Edited into P.O.V.: Girl Model (2013)
This is one disturbing documentary. I feel as shocked and repulsed as I would had I just watched a documentary on child pornography, which frankly, isn't too far removed from what I have just seen. I don't write many reviews but sadness and anger have prompted me to start typing. Unlike other reviewers who feel the directors skimmed the surface and left too much out, I disagree: by remaining quiet and distant (although thankfully they apparently did step in when the child models were in obvious need of help, which was not being provided by anyone else) they perfectly capture the solitary confusion, neglect, and loneliness that the girls face. The lack of action, human interaction (other than with unfriendly agency/magazine people), and the tedium of the documentary all perfectly mirror the experience the girls themselves go through. If we (adult viewers) aren't completely clear as to who certain people are, or what exactly is going on, then we can safely assume that a 13 year old girl from Siberia, who speaks neither English nor Japanese, and has no parents to help, would not know either - and that's the point. These young, hopeful, innocent girls are plucked from their surroundings and dropped into the ruthless, heartless, abusive world of modeling with no support system in place, where (shockingly, to me) women as much as men treat them as insentient "things", products that they can push, prod and pick apart. To make it all the more morally repugnant, having endured being repeatedly reviewed/rejected/reviewed/rejected/reviewed/rejected, they are sent home, not with thousands of dollars in their bank accounts, but IN DEBT to the agencies that "represent" (pimp) them. So who's to blame for all of this - does the fault lie with the parents for sending their children off, unescorted, into the blue? I don't think so- they have been promised a dream, a future, financial rewards, which in reality are unlikely to materialize, but should they be blamed for hoping for the best? Ashley (see below), in one of her scouting pitches, claims no model fails in Japan and they won't return in debt as they would if they are sent anywhere else, which is clearly - and she knows it! - a lie. The parents are oblivious to the truth of the situation into which their daughters are being sent, and I'd like to think the moms and dads give themselves enough of a hard time for falling for the lies, and believing in the dream that didn't (and rarely does) come true once it all does become clear upon their daughters' return. The perpetrators of what, in my opinion, amounts to borderline child abuse are Ashley Arbaugh, the scout responsible for finding the pre-pubescent girls and Noah and "Messiah", the agency owners she passes them on to. Ashley has obviously been psychologically damaged by her own time in the modeling industry (and possible dabble into other sideline activities - prostitution, perhaps? - which she alludes to by mentioning she had been a "bad girl"), a fact that is borne out physically in the form of a large cyst and fibroid she has to have surgically removed. She is clearly not healthy in the body, nor the head. She has a horrible lack of depth, acknowledging but then brushing aside the seedy side of the industry she feeds, even going so far as to refer to prostitution as "normal". Her morals have clearly collapsed in the face of an obvious selfish drive to make money. I found her perversely fascinating. Does she have any friends? Who would want to hang out with her? She mentions wanting a baby - but would anyone actually date her?... And cold-hearted it may sound but I truly hope she never actually has one, god forbid a daughter. As for the men who run the agencies, I have two words: "pedophile pimps". "Ugh" is how I feel having watched this documentary. What a sordid world and how callous human beings can be. Very sad.

Girl Model , a documentary out this week, follows the career of a 13-year-old Siberian model who is relocated to Japan. Anna Klassen on the most shocking bits.
On an average day, Nadya might have her food intake monitored so her hips don’t grow more than a centimeter. She might be told to lie about her age, and she even might be shown dead, autopsied bodies at the morgue. The scariest part? She’s only 13 years old.
A revealing new documentary, Girl Model , which opens in select theaters on Wednesday, details the life of the 13-year-old Siberian schoolgirl and the modeling scout who discovers her. According to the film, the cruel practices are widespread—though the film focuses only on Nadya, who has been plucked from her quaint life in the Siberian countryside with the promise of earning money to support her family with a fruitful modeling career in Japan.
But over the course of several heartbreaking months, she is mistreated in the chaotic and cold Tokyo fashion industry. She lands in a pint-sized apartment, and shares a bunk bed and cloistered bathroom with another teen model. Her hours are long, often going days without time off at the commanding hand of her agent, Tigran. Language barriers on “go sees” and one failed booking after another quickly turns Nadya’s young career into Japan’s Next Top Model from hell. Here, seven revelations from the frightening documentary.
Ashley, a former model turned scout, scours the Siberian countryside for fresh faces to feed the insatiable hunger of the Japanese market. But because modeling is a notably tough industry to enter, she says, the girls who are chosen from local castings often end up selling their bodies in a more literal manner. “All the girls just want to get out,” Ashley says. “They can be athletes, they can be gymnasts, they can be ballerinas, they can be prostitutes…you are a beautiful girl who uses her body to make money so it’s kind of natural.” She continues: “It’s just normal to be a prostitute, for them…maybe it’s easier than being a model.”
Chosen specifically for her pre-pubescent looks, Nadya’s wide-set eyes and seductively pouty lips have just the right mixture of youth and sex appeal for a Japanese market. But her age—a tender 13 years—is nearing too old for a bankable model. According to Ashley, “you can’t be young enough” when it comes to selecting fresh faces. “There is a certain glow to the skin,” and “innocent” is always in style. Ashley also notes that “when you catch a girl at 12, when these girls are in these very delicate stages of their life, then you have more power…to guide and direct.” When Nadya is brought to her first castings in Tokyo, she is told by her agent to say she is 15, two years older than her real age. According to the film, this kind of deception is common, and while being too young is frowned upon by professionals in the field, there is an underlying understanding that if you claim to be of a reasonable age—even 14 or 15—no one will ask questions.
You Might Never Know If You Book a Gig
In their free time, the young models will walk to the closest drugstore and spend hours poring over fashion magazines —but it’s not to catch up on the latest style tips. By paging through dozens of international covers, the teens are hoping to find pictures of themselves. While it seems obvious that American models know which clothing, magazines, and objects they’re branding, models like Nadya are kept entirely in the dark—an agency trick to keep models silenced. If a model doesn’t know where her photos are going, especially a 13-year-old who can’t speak English, let alone Japanese, she is less likely to demand a payout for each outlet that picks up her shots.
Tigran, Nadya’s agent (who is interviewed on-camera) has a very severe way of keeping his models in check. To make sure his girls behave themselves, he does something many might find twisted and even abusive: Tigran takes his models to the morgue and shows them the bodies of young girls, to highlight where their lives could have taken them, it seems, if they weren’t fortunate to be taken under his wing. He says that he “shows them young girls or boys who did drugs and passed away. And if the model is still too hardheaded, we have the autopsy done in front of them…believe me, seeing a dead young girl in front of you has a very strong effect…with their body cut open.”
Nadya’s contract, a lengthy document of fine print, comes with one very important clause: her agent has the right to change her contract on a day-to-day basis. With all rules out the window, Nadya’s job security, and the chance of a healthy income, is zilch.
You Aren’t Allowed to Go Through Puberty
Although many of the models selected for the Japanese market aren’t yet teenagers, going through puberty could be a breach of contract. According to Nadya’s agreement, if she gains even a centimeter on her hips, waist, or bust , she is liable to be sent home.
Thirteen-year-old Nadya left her comfortable home life in order to support her family—a chance to send them a little extra cash so they could eat three meals a day. But the glamorous life of modeling was anything but. While living in Tokyo, language barriers and lack of funds quickly drove Nadya into debt, a common state for models of her age and experience working in Japan . But when addressing the press, model scout Ashley disputes these facts, stating: “Every model has success in Japan. Unlike other markets, where they might go into debt, they never do in Japan—they only win.”
