Great article, flopsy. I'd never heard of the Markham project. Fascinating. But one work requires mention. The most famous pornographic "governess novel" of all time is THE ENGLISH GOVERNESS by John Glassco. In it, a sixteen year old boy, Richard Lovell, is placed under the care of a beautiful but severe governess, one Harriet Marwood. He is both sexually captivated by his young governess as well as severely punished by her. It is the quintessential femdom novel, a classic that has inspired countless imitators. In its own way, it is as classic as "The Story of O". The similarity between my governess noted above and Harriet Marwood should be rather obvious and that was deliberate.
Governesses really are a classic of spanking fiction. Something about them is just so intriguing!
Thought I'd just nip in and make a quick note to the effect that I deliberately omitted writing about the book The English Governess, because I hope to do a piece later on John Glassco AKA Miles Underwood. The book referred to has had many incarnations it seems, and has been reissued several times. It was originally published in 1960 and tells the story of a 14 year old boy and his humiliation by his governess intent on breaking him of "the filthy habit" of masturbating.
An excellent article, really well researched and very informative on this popular subject!
Great article, Flopsy. I'm interested in The English Governess, too. I never heard of the Markham project either. So, I have to say this was definitely educational as well as informative.
Loved this informative and well written article.
Great article FB Where can I find Stoltz Sinatra's essay on the Markham Project? I first heard of this from David Roman - and wrote an article here http://voiceinthecorner.com/2009/11/04/a-victorian-governess-founder-of-the-markham-project-fact-or-fiction/ back in 2009. I too assumed it was fiction - but wrote an article from an email from David to shake the tree and see what fell out. Missed this Sintra piece though - is it based on my article or does it have an independent source? Thanks DJ Black :)
What an excellent , well-informed article, flopsy. The response shows just how much continuing interest there is still out there on this enduring topic. I look forward to reading your promised Miles Underwood/John Glassgo piece. Thank you.
Very interesting article, and well illustrated. Now I want to read more of the extracts, especially the tin bath and carbolic soap! At first I wondered if you were correct to say the profession has MOSTLY died out - surely the breed is completely extinct? But no, a quick search found an agency in London who can provide present day governesses - but they don't come cheap and it seems to be expected that most will end up working in places like Saudi Arabia.
Intriguing article about a vanishing profession. Fewer and fewer households can afford a single maid, what to say about a governess. In Victorian times most probably a governess would be a common employee among the well to do. I can see a modern sheik employing a stern English or German no-nonsense governess to teach foreign language to his children and maintain order in his seraglio. There’s a story in this just screaming to be written.
Love the graphics and the article on a subject near and dear to so many, many male hearts. Fantastic piece of writing also, but that is as usual.
Great article. I actually knew a real-life governess who fitted the descriptions - raised in an institution as an orphan, sent "into service" and eventually rose to look after the children of a household, but in the last century not the Victoria era! She died a few years ago and would be shocked at how governesses are featured in spanking stories!
I've never felt inclined to write a governess story myself, perhaps because I'm quite ignorant of the institution, but this may encourage me. I found the discussion of the governess' social position really interesting. She was a servant, but needed to be well-educated and so was often from a quite high social stratum but fallen on hard times (or maybe she was just number six of six daughters). So in taking up her position (I mean the job, not touching her toes) she was accepting a subordinate position which might have rankled. Yet she had great power over children from a higher-ranking stratum and might indeed rise through the marriage opportunities this could offer. She was also a pathfinder for the responsible professional woman. If women could do this responsible job well, why not others? All that helps create tensions and contradictions which are fertile soil for spanking literature. Many thanks, flopsy.
An interesting study on the governess. I remember many novels that were written during the Victorian era. All with CP in mind.
A great article here, with the topic thorough researched and presented. And ditto to pretty much everything else others have already said.
An enjoyable and informative article flopsy. Thank you. I'm quite sure though that 'Miss Markham' existed, though she may have used other names. Maybe there is a tiny clue in the surname? In fact I'm quite sure she is still with us, though again using different names. What a rich and endless source of fiction 'the governess' is.
I would like to propose an American constitutional amendment. The President's wife is addressed as "Mrs President", I believe, so presumably the state Governor's wife is "Mrs Governor", though what happens with female Governors (other than well-deserved spanking) I do not know. Henceforth, if my amendment passes, a Governor's wife will be known as the Governess, unless it be thought preferable that a female Governor should be so addressed.
Up until I got into my spanko years, I always thought the governess was someone like Mary Poppins and other characters like whats her name in The Sound of Music. Then I discovered likely more truth in the matter as the governess's were likely cruel to many children as the article states bad behaviour made the governess look bad, and who wold ever want to look bad just because kids are acting like kids. Interesting article, I have considered writing a governess story as it tends to fit the f/m side of things, but as yet my mind and fingers have not cooperated.
A very impressive almost academic study of the governess - oh for a time machine set for the Victorian days!
Thank you for an interesting and informative article. 1) Among my books, I have a copy of Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte. Agnes became a governess. It was not a very attractive life. She had no authority and at least once wished she could use a birch rod on her pupils. 2) barret, in Canada the Queen's representitive is the Governor General. When we have a lady doing the job, I take pleasure in referring to her as the Governess General.
I could imagine that a childrens' Governess would be an attractive proposition for a family able to afford one. Children upset the smooth running of an upper-middle-class household, and the Governess represents an ideal solution. Her presence would satisfactorily isolate children from their parents, and any contact would follow the parents' preference - one imagines freshly scrubbed youngsters being paraded at bedtime for a goodnight kiss. However, his autobiography tells us that the young Winston Churchill hardly saw his parents, even at a young age, and his Governess (he called her 'womany') undertook the emotional need for a mother. Fundamentally, her role would be the education of her charges to a level at which they could be packed off to boarding school, and discipline would be left to her until then, as long as she didn't bother her employers with the details. No doubt, any lack of teaching skill on her part could be corrected by her increased enforcement of discipline. In fact, Churchill's mother was strongly against corporal punishment; she took her boy away from a preparatory school when she found that they used it. Presumably his Governess was of a like frame of mind. In other cases, a good regular thrashing was ... well ... character-building, don't y'know.
I'm sorry I only got round to reading your article now, thanks to Clifford Dorset's making a comment and bringing the topic to my attention. It is quite comprehensive and does indicate the depth of research you have done and that can still be plumbed. My take is that many families did not want to be bothered by dealing with children so the governess was given an unusual amount of authority over them. This, combined with the intense Victorian interest in flagellation, made for the delightfully combustible mixture of disciplinary eroticism we all find so entrancing. I have been writing more stories on modern governesses and how they may emulate or carry on these traditions; I hope to submit some here soon. One theme--from Dedeaux, the master--that I hope to develop is when a mother/wife misbehaves and is subjected to the authority and discipline of the governess, usually by her husband but sometimes by herself in seeking penance for her naughtiness.
The role and position of Governess, affords our imaginations and that of authors, a broad blank canvas upon which to build our 'fantasy' Governess, be she youthful or mature, strict and cruel or firm but fair, is she a Governess by choice or by need? The title 'The Governess' paints a different picture to each one of us, and i for one enjoy taking her on a journey in my mind, that tickles my 'fancy'. I joined the comments late on this article, but have to say thank you for posting it, a lovely well researched subject.
The best spanking book I ever read was "Petit Maman" written, I think, by Louise Malatesta subtitled the Smacking and published by AKS which introduced a Governess who is originally hired to educate two young boys in a large country house in France. The Governess, as is usual in fiction, is young, beautiful, tall and voluptuous and the descriptions of spankings and canings are splendidly detailed sometimes in private and sometimes public. The Governess is my favourite spanking fantasy!!!.

5 Star Review from Mary Tanner: When a terrible fire claims the lives of her friends and employers, Kathy Wright must make sure that their children will be well cared for. Even if that means that she must face her worst fear and leave the security of the Scottish Highlands and return to England...Richard Johnson's heart was crushed many years ago and he still has not managed to put the pieces back together. Abby always seems to be able to spin a tale that fills your heart and draws you in. This one has done it yet again. I so enjoyed this one, Abby!! 5 Star Review from Nancy Werner: You sure did another remarkable job on this book, Abby. The storyline was incredible and amazing along with outstanding and intriguing characters that woven to make this book come alive. Thank you for a delightful time that I had reading it. 5 Star Review from Brenda: I think this is one of my favorite books from Abby. It was fast paced and hard to put down. Richard and his twin "Lucas" fell in love with the same women. Sadly, Richard was a sore looser and could not get past his hurt. Which only left him missing out on so much time with is brother, wife and their kids. Being a twin, you have a special connection. Richard knew something bad had happened even before he was given the news that his twin had died in a horrific fire that left his 2 nieces without both parents. Enter the nanny, who has her own secrets. She was able to save the girls from the fire but not the parents. Richard let her continue as the nanny and that is when love blossoms for both of them. I love the dreams Richard & Kathy both had of Lucas & Isla. A happy way to be able to let go and say good bye. 5 Star Review from Vicky: Loved, loved, loved this book. Abby Ayles has out done herself again.. It seems as though each of her books is better than the last.one. 5 Star Review from Jeanne: This is a very good story. Of course since it is a romance story there is love, but there is also a mystery that takes a while to unravel. 5 Star Review from Vanessa: The characters are great. It is so interesting to see how they respond to the different situations that occur throughout the story. This is more than a wonderful Regency romance. It is also an exciting mystery. This is a special book. The best of Abby Ayles. 5 Star Review from Debra: If you enjoy the not so typical Regency Era romance fiction, then you'll LOVE Abby Ayles! The plot flows beautifully as you get to know the main characters in this well written novel. 5 Star Review from Mary: This is such a heartwarming and captivating story. I always appreciate the time and effort that goes into your books. You catch the reader at the very beginning and do not let go of their imagination until the end. The intrigue of the characters was wonderful. 5 Star Review from Catherine: I like the cover of this book because it portrays the time period. Then I dive into the book. I stayed up late to read this book start to finish. 5 Star Review from Chris: Another fantastic book by Abby. I couldn't put it down. The characters were so believable and so in line with the story. The story showed how fast your life and circumstances can change.
