A Dog’s Senses

A Dog’s Senses

Your dog has the same five senses as you, only some are more highly

developed than yours.

Smell – This is the most highly developed among all your dog’s five senses.

His sense of taste is thousands of times superior to that of humans. That is the

reason why dogs are usually sought to do tasks such as tracking missing

persons, tracing substances, digging underground, etc.

Hearing – The shape and the size of your dog’s ears plus the fact that they are

mobile greatly contribute to how well they can hear sounds. Dogs have

more muscles in their ears compared to humans enabling them to move their

ears towards the direction of the sound. Thus, they can even locate the origin

of the sound. They also hear sounds that humans don’t normally hear.

Touch – Your dog uses his sense of touch to communicate with you and with

other dogs. They have touch-sensitive hairs and nerve endings that’s why

they enjoy massages, petting, and scratching which are all usually

expressions of physical affection from pet parents.

Sight – Your dog’s sense of sight is a lot different than humans. Dogs see

better at night than during the day. Their eyes are also better at detecting

movement. Therefore, they can more easily identify objects or things that are

in motion than those that are still.

Taste – Dogs don’t have a very well-developed sense of taste, unlike

humans. They get to enjoy their food thanks to their highly developed sense

of smell. Otherwise, they’d just be wolfing down any food without much

discrimination.
