A charming film marred by the extant 47 minute television print!
This film has an utterly charming storyline. A Parisian painter (Ramon Novarro) paints a living doll whom he considers his own creation. Along come some tourists from the United States including the lovely Marian Marsh and her sister Margaret Tallichet. Much to the painter's surprise, Marsh is the personification of the living doll he created in his painting. A lot of fun ensues as the action moves from Paris to an ocean liner and, finally, New York. I must confess, I didn't see the ending coming. It caught me off guard, but it does all work out satisfacturily.
Novarro is very good, although he is sans a French accent, his likeability makes his role work. I like his 1925 version of "Ben-Hur" much better than the 1959 remake. Novarro looked more the part than Charlton Heston did. Marian Marsh is picture pretty as usual. I enjoy her in thrillers like "Svengali" and "The Black Room", dramas like "Crime and Punishment", and comedies such as this Republic Pictures offering. This is Margaret Tallichet's first film. She is mostly remembered today for the early Film Noir "Stranger on the Third Floor". She was married to William Wyler who directed the 1959 version of "Ben-Hur".
Sadly, when this 67 minute film was sold to television, it was cut down to 47 minutes. This was to allow for 13 minutes of TV commercials so the film would fit into a one hour time slot. This is seemingly the only print in circulation which is too bad. Scenes fade in for 10 or 15 seconds and suddenly fade out. It's very irksome that the missing 20 minutes of footage would most certainly add to the enjoyment of this madcap film. One hopes there is a complete 67 minute print, hiding in a vault, just waiting to be discovered. Until then, enjoy this print. It's a short and amusing experience.
