Text

A Course in Miracles is a self-study curriculum that teaches the meaning of love and how to achieve it. It is the product of Helen Schucman, a clinical and research psychologist who was trained as an associate professor of medical psychology. It is based on the belief that all people are born with an awareness of God and that the greatest "miracle" is to gain full access to this divine presence. It consists of three volumes: the Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. Its primary objective is to teach the student how to remove blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is one's natural inheritance. The textbook also includes questions and answers to help the reader gain a clearer understanding of the lessons and their application in daily life.

Workbook

A Course in Miracles is a unique self-study system that seeks to help students change their minds and perceptions. It was written by Dr. Helen Schucman, a clinical and research psychologist who identified a process of inner dictation she believed to be coming from Jesus Christ. The Combined Volume is the only edition of the text that she authorized for publication, and it includes all of the writings in her Scripted Edition and two valuable Supplements: “Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice” and “The Song of Prayer.”

A Course in Miracles is an ideal resource for anyone seeking spiritual transformation. It offers a complete and carefully conceived curriculum that aims to remove the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence in one’s life. Its underlying premise is that love is the most important thing in the world.

Manual for Teachers

There are three volumes in the Course: a Text, a Workbook and a Manual for Teachers. Each volume has a different purpose and focuses on a specific area of learning.

The first two volumes focus primarily on studying and practicing the Course’s principles. The third volume teaches how to teach the Course to others.

In the context of a typical college course, students would study the textbook to learn the material, then perform the lessons from the workbook. Eventually, the student would be ready to extend the lessons to others and thus reinforce them in their own mind.

It seems as if A Course in Miracles has adopted the same educational model, but in this case, the teacher is supposed to be doing the teaching rather than the student. This leads to a question that seems to be at the heart of the Course itself: Does it really teach?

As a matter of fact, if you read the Course carefully, it teaches that your main learning takes place through extension to others. For it is through this process that you are able to reinforce the Course’s ideas in your own mind, enforcing them as your dominant thought-system.

This idea that your main learning is through extension to others is not entirely new in spiritual teaching. It is a fairly common theme in Christian Science and other spiritual systems. However, A Course in Miracles goes a bit deeper than other spiritual systems and makes the argument that this is actually the central teaching of the Course.

For, as the Course points out, when a person has changed his direction away from the world’s curriculum by making one single deliberate choice in which he sees in another person the same interests as himself, he is now called to be a teacher of God (Manual, p. 2; M-Intro.3:4; M-2.4).

The teacher of God is depicted in this section as a healer, a healing practitioner who goes to patients to offer them the power of forgiveness and healing. This teacher is also envisioned as a teacher who gives verbal teachings that reflect Course principles.

Thousands of people are attaining true inner peace through the study of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). It is a complete self-study spiritual thought system that teaches forgiveness as the road to peace and remembrance of God. ACIM is a unique blend of psychology, Christianity and Eastern philosophy.

A Course in Miracles was scribed, word for word, by Helen Schucman through a process of "inner dictation" she identified as coming from Jesus. A clinical and research psychologist, she received the writings in 1965-1972 from her "inner scribe" as an extension of the principles she had already learned through her work with Dr. William Thetford, professor of medical psychology at Columbia University.

Since its original publication in 1976, A Course in Miracles has sold over three million copies worldwide and is used by students of all major world religions. Today, it is published by the Foundation for Inner Peace and disseminated by a network of autonomous centers.

The Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers are the three books that comprise A Course in Miracles. The order in which they are studied depends on the needs and preferences of the student. In addition, there are two supplements to the Text and Workbook: "Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice" and "The Song of Prayer."

This combined volume is the only edition that contains in one place all of the writings that Helen Schucman, its Scribe, authorized for printing, including all of her comments on and clarification of some of the terms used throughout the Course. This includes her own "manual for teachers" which explains and clarifies some of the more common questions that a teacher might have.

Besides the Text, Workbook and Manual for Teachers, this set also includes the 5-CD MP3 audio set with 62 playing hours of material. The CDs contain the Preface, Text, Workbook for Students, Manual for Teachers and all the Supplements to the Course. The Text, Workbook and Manual for Teachers are read by Jim Stewart, an early student of the Course, and the Supplements are read by Brad Cahill.
