A Brief Understanding On Power BI Knowledge Base

Enterprise DNA Info

You already know from the past blogs in the series, that developers tend to combine new technologies to build new solutions. There are new technologies coming that do not get the attention that they would deserve. Power BI is one of those technologies.

This post will give the readers a brief idea what Power BI is, because there will be future blog posts on Power BI that will refer to this post.

The Power BI Experiences

Microsoft Power BI is a collection of online services and features that let you find and visualize data, share discoveries, and collaborate in intuitive novel ways. There are two experiences currently available for Power BI knowledge base: the current experience, generally referred to as Power BI for Office 365, and a new experience for Power BI.

Power BI for Office 365

This configuration is currently available for Office 365 customers and is in-built into Office 365. This technology is based on Excel 2013 Power View / Power Pivot and SharePoint 2013 Excel Services. It pulls the data, caches it and loads the required tables into memory for analysis.

Power BI

Power BI is different to Power BI for Office 365. It is an online service, which is implemented for the analysis of data and displaying this data in newfangled and attractive dashboards / reports. The Power BI enterprise DNA is a “standalone” service, means it is not dependent on Office 365 or anything else. You have 3 elements dashboards, reports and datasets.
