Lolita’s Personality

They also love going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but is also a great pet for children.
Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a nuisance for those living close by. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their noise.
The species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her by putting her through head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to develop a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who connect with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.
