Before the formation of Toto the band, members performed session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all performed on Boz Scaggsalbum from 1975 Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to the formation of Toto in the year 1976.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics for the absence of hit singles. In 1985, the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen quit the group, and they held auditions to find a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in the year 1986.
