Went on a field trip with one of my boys on Monday. Even after spending the day there... I have no desire to come down a mountain with a couple of sticks on my feet. Though I almost bought a lift ticket to go up and get pictures.... however, the wind was blowing sideways and my camera did not like the weather, so we (my camera and I) got a coffee and stayed in the lodge.

I drive to the Library Square and park, then walk 2 blocks to the Salt Lake Roasting Company.
Feels good walking in the morning. No, I take that back - feels great since I know this 60something F is going to turn into 90something F in a few hours.
Heavy door offers just the right amount of resistance for me to streech my arms (yes, had to use both, after all it's only 7am), I walk in and coffee is what I become- the smell is so strong there's nothing else to think about but that dark, bitter, warm ambrosia. They are roasting.
I oreder my usual and pick up a bag of beans.
I settle by the window and sip the morning in, all the while clutching the bag to my chest, breathing in the smell that makes functioning in a "morning society" possible. It is not the alarm clock, nor the desire to be a productive member, it is simply coffee that gets me up in the morning; especially some November morning, with 10 inches of snow on the ground and still falling, cold floor tiles, broken windshield wiper, 8 hours of classroom ahead...
Yes, I am very grateful...to my grandmother who introduced me to a sweet late at 6 (I slurped the delicious drink and pretended colored pencils were cigarettes), and thus begun my love affair with coffee.
Today, it is my magic elixir, grand tasks of each day grow down in size when worries about their executions are chased away by a cup or two of warm darkness, all of a sudden world is a much less sinister place than the sharp sound of my alarm clock made it out to be....yes, magic is right.
Thank you, thank you fair traders who grow it, and pickers who pick it, and Roasting Company who buys it and roasts it and makes a mean cup, thank you Kaldi for discovering it (or maybe I should be thanking his goats :), thank you good people who make my days possible...you have done so much good in the world, you are all going straight to heaven.
