Finding the right memory-foam mattress or mattress topper is as much about personal preference as it is about weight limit. Memory foam comes in different densities to accommodate various-sized people, but you also have to consider how much support you need or want. Density Equals Support The higher the memory foam’s density or hardness, the better quality it is and the more support it offers. But mattress choice isn’t that simple; A compressed mattress cannot support your body’s pressure points -- hips, shoulders, lower back -- or hold your spine in its natural curve, explains The Better Sleep Council.

Depending on your size plus the weight of another person in a shared bed, you may prefer and actually need a 4- or 5-inch-thick, 5- to 8-pound density memory-foam topper or mattress top layer. Guaranteed Good Sleep Memory-foam mattress manufacturers may not state weight restrictions in their warranties, but read it thoroughly or ask to be sure. Look for a 20-year-or-longer warranty, and a 100-percent money-back guarantee that extends through a realistic trial period, such as 120 days. Obese people have specific mattress needs; bariatric memory-foam mattresses are available for those who weigh from about 350 to 800 pounds. : FAQs About Memory Foam Mattress ToppersThe Better Sleep Council: What About the Warranty?: The Origin of Memory FoamThe Better Sleep Council: The Better Sleep Guide Photo Credits Dynamic Graphics/Creatas/Getty Images Suggest a CorrectionA temperature-controlled mattress pad can make sleeping a dream on a memory foam mattress. Even though a memory foam mattress is not a conventional innerspring mattress, it usually does not require special sheets, unless the mattress is a different height than your previous mattress.

But there are other considerations when choosing sheets to fit your new mattress. Because memory foam mattresses retain body heat, avoid microfiber or flannel sheets unless you enjoy being extra toasty in bed. Thread Count For a memory foam mattress, sheets with a thread count of approximately 200 will increase sleeping comfort. Thread count refers to the number of threads in each square inch of fabric. The higher the number, the denser the thread count. While an increased thread count definitely makes a sheet more soft and supple to the touch, it also affects how well it breathes and wicks moisture. Higher-thread-count sheets do not breathe as well as lower-count ones and can make for an uncomfortable night on a memory foam mattress. Natural Fabrics or Synthetics Even though manufacturers may indicate that a specific polyester or synthetic blend allows greater airflow, the facts do not support this. Synthetic fabrics usually include plastic or petroleum products in the mix during manufacture, which makes them less breathable.

Synthetic fabrics work best to keep you warm, and they shed moisture in the rain, but on a memory foam bed you cannot receive a good night's sleep if you get too hot in bed. Natural materials for sheets include cotton, linen, silk and hemp. While 100 percent cotton, linen, silk or hemp sheets disperse heat well, they are often costly. A poly-cotton blend with no more than 30 percent polyester is an inexpensive option that still releases excess heat. Material Weave For a memory foam bed, percale sheets offer a cooler, crisper feel for sleeping than sheets labeled as sateen. Sateen provides a soft, smooth and polished weave to the sheets, which makes it retain more heat when compared to the matte weave used in percale sheets. But either sheet type works for a memory foam mattress, since overall, choosing between these weaves is a matter of personal preference. Sheet Finish Because memory foam mattresses already contain a lot of man-made materials, opt for 100 percent organic or pure-finish sheets.

Pure finish sheets are either made without added chemicals or have all traces of manufacturing chemicals removed prior to packaging. Made from cotton that is grown without pesticides, 100 percent organic sheets may cost more, but they offer the best option for your memory foam mattress. How long will my Upholstery Foam last? You really get what you pay for with upholstery foam. The more expensive the upholstery foam / upholstery foam sheets, the longer the upholstery foam / upholstery foam sheets will last. You don't need high quality upholstery foam for a seating area that doesn't get used, while a sofa for watching "the game" will need top quality upholstery foams. Our experience has shown us that most upholstery foams / upholstery foam sheets will break in and soften up to about 20% over time—if under heavy use, after 6 months to 1 year. Despite this warning we still don't recommend that you order the next firmer upholstery foam grade. If your upholstery foam is too firm, you may never sit in it and the upholstery foam / upholstery foam sheets may never soften. One way to construct a really long lasting upholstery foam cushion is to use our rebond upholstery foam. This grade of upholstery foam (rebond upholstery foam) has proven not to soften with time. Rebond upholstery foam has three times the quality and weight of other upholstery foams.

You may need to make the bottom half of the upholstery foam cushions out of rebond foam and the top half out of softer upholstery foam to create the perfect comfort. In these circumstances, wrap the entire upholstery foam cushion in our polyester upholstery foam batting. Talk about upholstery galore! Originally springs, cotton, and horsehair were used in place of upholstery foam. From about the 1930s, upholstery foam was a natural latex-based (natural tree sap) upholstery foam called "pincore." In the 1960s, chemical polyurethane upholstery foam became the cushion norm. Chemical companies lobbied the California senate to require all upholstery components to pass flammability standards, and toxic flame retardant additives such as PBDEs were added to upholstery foam. In 2005 PBDEs were outlawed, due to their link to breast cancer. Now most foam companies don't use those chemicals in upholstery or upholstery foam. They have switched to other chemical flame-retardants. Currently, because of this flame retardant requirement, upholstery foam is being sold all over the country with flame retardants. There is currently legislation that would change the requirement. For everyone's health, let's hope it passes. Our company roots are in upholstery foam and upholstery supplies since 1960.Nearly all furniture sold retail around the world is made using our "C" grade of upholstery foam.
