6-Week SAT Study Plan for Students Who Have About 8 Hours a Week

Most SAT plans on the internet assume you are studying full time over a summer. Most students are not — they are in school, and the real budget is one or two hours on a few weeknights plus a longer session on the weekend. That is about eight hours a week, and six weeks of it is genuinely enough to move a score if the hours are placed correctly. The trick at this volume is that almost all of your gains come from reviewing missed questions, so the schedule has to protect review time above everything else.

The six-week breakdown at ~8 hours per week

  • Week 1 — Diagnostic and error taxonomy. Take one full official practice test on the weekend. During the week, categorise every miss into one of four buckets: did not know the content, misread the question, careless arithmetic, ran out of time. The bucket distribution determines everything that follows.
  • Week 2 — Math content repair. Three weeknight sessions on your two weakest math domains (usually heart of algebra or problem solving and data analysis). Weekend: one timed math module plus full review.
  • Week 3 — Reading and Writing. Grammar rules on the SAT are a finite, small list — punctuation, subject-verb agreement, modifiers, transitions. Three weeknights is enough to cover it. Weekend: timed R&W module. Week 1 topics come back for their day-14 review this week.
  • Week 4 — Full test number two, plus mixed review. Weekend full test under real timing and real conditions. Weeknights before it are light. The two sessions after it are pure review of the test, question by question.
  • Week 5 — Timing and pacing. By now the content gaps are known. This week is about the clock: modules done under time with a hard stop, and a deliberate strategy for which questions to skip and return to. Day-30 reviews of week 1 topics land here.
  • Week 6 — Final test and taper. One last full test early in the week, at least four days before the real one. Then only error-log review. Nothing new. Two nights off before test day.

Two full tests in six weeks feels low to most students. It is deliberate: at eight hours a week, a full test plus a proper review consumes an entire week's budget. Three tests would leave no time to fix anything you found.

The spacing intervals that do the work

The single highest-leverage thing in any study schedule is when you revisit a topic, not how long you sat with it the first time. The interval pattern that survives contact with a real calendar is:

  • Day 0 — first pass. Read, work problems, take notes. Expect to feel like you know it. You do not yet.
  • Day 1 — first review. Short, 10–15 minutes. This is the review that stops the 24-hour cliff.
  • Day 3 — second review. Do problems, not re-reading. Re-reading feels productive and is not.
  • Day 7 — third review. By now you should be able to reconstruct the topic from a blank page.
  • Day 14 — fourth review. Mixed in with other topics, not blocked.
  • Day 30 — final review, or the nearest date before the exam if there is not 30 days left.

Each review is a fraction of the original session — roughly 20% of the initial time. That is what makes the whole thing fit. Six touches on a topic costs about twice a single session, and the retention difference at test time is not subtle.

The reason people do not do this is purely bookkeeping. If you cover 40 topics, you are tracking 240 review dates by hand. That is the arithmetic that kills the plan in week two.

Four ways these plans die

  1. Front-loading the hard content. Putting the worst topic in week one feels virtuous and means you review it once and never again. Hard topics need to be early enough to get four review touches, which usually means the first third of the runway — not day one.
  2. No slack days. A schedule with seven study days a week has a 100% failure rate, because the first missed day cascades into every subsequent one. Build in one or two empty days per week explicitly labelled as catch-up. They will get used.
  3. Re-reading instead of retrieving. If a review session does not involve producing the answer from memory, it is not a review session. Cover the page. Write it out. Then check.
  4. Measuring hours instead of topics. Hours logged is a comfort metric. Topics covered and topics reviewed on schedule is the metric that predicts a score.

SAT-specific: the careless-arithmetic bucket is the one people ignore because it feels like it will fix itself. It does not. If more than a fifth of your misses are careless, that is the single highest-value thing on your list, and the fix is procedural — write the step down — not conceptual.
