20252025 (MMXXV) is the current year, and is a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2025th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 25th year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the 6th year of the 2020s decade. So far, the year has seen the continuation of major armed conflicts, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Sudanese civil war, and the Gaza war. Internal crises in Bangladesh, Ecuador, Georgia, Germany, Haiti, Somalia, and South Korea continued into this year, with the latter leading to Yoon Suk Yeol's arrest and removal from office.
G7The Group of Seven (G7) is an intergovernmental political and economic forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States; additionally, the European Union (EU) is a "non-enumerated member". It is organized around shared values of pluralism, liberal democracy, and representative government. G7 members are major IMF advanced economies. Originating from an ad hoc gathering of finance ministers in 1973, the G7 has since become a formal, high-profile venue for discussing and coordinating solutions to major global issues, especially in the areas of trade, security, economics, and climate change. Each member's head of government or state, along with the EU's Commission president and European Council president, meet annually at the G7 Summit; other high-ranking officials of the G7 and the EU meet throughout the year. Representatives of other states and international organizations are often invited as guests, with Russia having been a formal member (as part of the G8) from 1997 until its expulsion in 2014. The G7 is not based on a treaty and has no permanent secretariat or office. It is organized through a presidency that rotates annually among the member states, with the presiding state setting the group's priorities and hosting the summit; Canada presides for 2025. While lacking a legal or institutional basis, the G7 is widely considered to wield significant international influence; it has catalyzed or spearheaded several major global initiatives, including efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic, provide financial aid to developing countries, and address climate change through the 2015 Paris Agreement. However, the group has been criticized by observers for its allegedly outdated and limited membership, narrow global representation, and ineffectualness. The rise of BRICS+ for example, with its expanded membership and focus on South-South cooperation, reflects a broader shift in global power dynamics, with emerging economies gaining greater influence in international affairs. The G7 countries have together a population of about 780 million people (or almost 10% of the world population), comprise around 50% of worldwide nominal net wealth and as of 2024 about 30% of world GDP (as by purchasing power parity) and more than 44% of nominal gross domestic product.
Kananaskis VillageKananaskis Village is an unincorporated community in Alberta's Rockies within the Kananaskis Country park system in the Kananaskis Improvement District of Alberta, Canada. It is located approximately 26 km (16 mi) south of the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), 3 km (1.9 mi) west of Highway 40 (Kananaskis Trail) via Mt. Allan Drive and Centennial Drive. The community is located on the west shore of the Kananaskis River at the base of Mount Kidd. The village was the host of the 28th G8 summit in 2002 and will be the host of the 51st G7 summit in 2025. Kananaskis Improvement District's municipal office is located in Kananaskis Village.
49th G7 summitThe 49th G7 summit was held from 19 to 21 May 2023 in the city of Hiroshima in Hiroshima Prefecture. Leaders of G7 countries joined in Hiroshima to discuss a number of challenges to peace and prosperity facing the global order while consulting with invited guests. The issues discussed included the Russian invasion of Ukraine and effects on the international order, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other geopolitical crises. To resolve these issues, the G7 pledged to uphold the free and open international order based on "the rule of law", and strengthened the G7's outreach to emerging and developing countries. The long invitees list reflects attempts to influence the "Global South", a term used for developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, all of which have complex political and economic ties to both Russia and China. Many geopolitical commentators remarked that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received much attention and dominated the summit, and that the Hiroshima summit achieved many objectives. The leaders' communiqué featured commitments and statements on a range of topics including climate, health, food security, and technology. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, nuclear nonproliferation, and economic security were the most prominent. Other five standalone statements were issued. In not one but two statements, the G7 made clear to China their stance on divisive geopolitical hot spots such as the Indo-Pacific and Taiwan, but the most important part of their message centered on what they called "economic coercion".
50th G7 summitThe 50th G7 summit was held from 13 to 15 June 2024 in the city of Fasano in Apulia, Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced in November 2023 that Fasano would be the headquarters of the G7.
51st G7 summitThe 51st G7 summit will be held from 15 to 17 June 2025 in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. Kananaskis previously hosted the 28th G8 summit.
2025 G20 Johannesburg SummitThe G20 Johannesburg Summit will be the twentieth meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20), a meeting of heads of state and government held from 22 to 23 November 2025. It will be the first G20 summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa and on the African continent. The summit will cost the South African government R691 million.
