Wow... I read some of the reviews and was very surprised.Probably because I was married for 47 years to the love of my life and being from a country that the word sex was never spoken and definitely "taboo"at 16 and 18 we knew nothing about it,except of course what we felt for each other. So we bought a book.....and I'm delighted to say that we tried a lot of things that Anastasia and Christian did in this movie....lol....oh the memories. Any way this movie is fantastic....I see it as a great love story that starts flourishing the first day they met when Anastasia falls flat on her face at Christian's office door. The look on their faces at that moment said it all. They played their parts to perfection. Anastasia's love, patience and understanding became Christian's life-line. Don't be so anxious about the sex that you miss this great love story. FANTASTIC!!!

I saw this movie on cable and was fascinated by the characters, so I went and bought the books - all 5 of them (Please E.L. James - give us Fifty Shades Freed from Christian's perspective). After reading the book, I bought the unrated version and I think it was a good representative of the book in some ways. Certainly, you finished the movie believing that Christian's way of life - his BDSM was all he could strive for - and I think that was somewhat over emphasized in the movie. I don't think the movie gave you enough of the reasons that Ana DID fall in love with Christian - he was a bit type-cast as the Dom - and although there were some good scenes that showed him allowing himself to just "be" with Ana as a woman and not as his Sub - I think the story was a bit shocking to some people who never or will never read the books. I think the 2 "Fifty Shades of Grey" books give you better insight into the real ways that Christian was changing with Ana's influence. And of course, when he belted her - and she left, I think that was the first time you really experienced the loss that he felt when she was gone. Again, not having Dr. Flynn, Christian's psychiatrist even mentioned in ANY of the movies probably lowered some viewers opinion of him that he wasn't trying to make right a life that had started so wrongly - and then continued with "Mr. Robinson's" exploitation of him at 15. But if you did love the movie, please buy the two accompanying books so that you can get an idea of the true depth of both Ana and Christian's journey together - sexually and emotionally.

There's more to this movie than just sex. It tells the story of a complicated love between your an average girl and the Mysterious millionaire. It also tackles some heavy topics such as psychological issues and childhood trauma. It's an overall great film and I highly recommend it.

This movie is a travesty and is horrible. Talk about damaging a lifestyle that is already under scrutiny and judgement.... This movie is a bored housewife's fantasy - and for the fact that the story was fanfcition for twilight should make people stand back and take pause. Yet - all those people who bashed twighlught due to the unhealthy relationship in it and are loving yhis movie need to realize that they are true hypocrites. This whole storyline is bs. Its not Dominate/submissive - its more like Master/slave... and a "Dominate" who withholds emotional support when their sub is truly needing it. I can go on and on and on .... But for those who have watched this and then red the book and think they are into Dominate/submissive lifestyle because this got their interest - try researching what it truly means. Research who truly has power, research the different roles a sub can have and what role a Dom has. I am so sick to death of hearing 'im not into vanilla' - heads up.... No one in the lifestyle talks like that. This has done more damage than if this had never existed at all.

This movie is like a bad Disney movie where the couple fall in love after knowing each other for two seconds. It glorifies what should be recognized as RED FLAGS in a relationship (not talking about the consensual sex play that used condoms - that was about the only thing I thought they did well). What I'm talking about is how he is immediately too intense, giving way too much attention, gifts, flights, etc to someone he just met (i.e. classic love-bombing technique used by abusers), he's controlling of her schedule, super possessive, randomly and uninvited-ly shows up where she is to "check" on her and has a string of previous relationships. This is NOT a romance, this is how predators work. I kept yelling RUN GIRL RUUUN throughout the movie. Also, the writing was just bad (I felt embarrassed for them). It was the same play-out trope (i.e. poor, timid girl meets insanely rich, overly-assertive dude who instantly wants "only" her . . . blah blah boring).

Anyone who says this trilogy is about abuse needs to take several seats bc this isn’t for you! Christian is a dom that’s had several subs prior to meeting Ana. Once he meets her everything changes for him and he learns what it’s like to fall in love and be loved. The saying a man will only change for the right woman sums up Christian in a nutshell! Love this franchise can’t wait for Freed Christian’s perspective to come out this year 2021! I still watch the unrated movies every month since that’s closest to the books. Dakota and Jamie did an excellent job playing these characters!

I loved this movie. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan played their parts to perfection. They were so believable, and sometimes they made me smile. This movie goes in my collection of all-time favorites, along with, The Body Guard, The Graduate, An Office and a Gentlemen. Thorn Birds, Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, and many more). Some of my favorite scenes were the nighttime helicopter flight to Seattle, the glider ride, the view from the windows in the Escala with the sound of rain outside. The soundtrack was passionate. The movie was pure escapism; it transports you to a different place. Thank you for making this wonderful movie.

Darkly sinister, and predictable with a POWERFUL WARNING

This film tells the deplorable story of a sick depraved control freak that harasses, stalks, captivates, and lures a slightly retarded young woman into the cruel sinister world of BDSM. The film depicts similar events that led to the grotesque real-life murders committed on Caroline Devlin and Susan Nicholson by Robert Trigg – murders that were not considered suspect by Sussex Police – even though one of Trigg’s victims was violently assaulted in public by Trigg - and Trigg was mixed up in BOTH deaths (the mind boggles). The acting is hammy and the diction is deplorable - and at times the dialogue is totally incomprehensible – requiring one to switch on the sub-titles to determine what is being said. As to the direction – it is atrocious on so many levels. As an example, ALL plots since the Greek tragedies follow a well-defined ‘timing’ structure driven by ‘unforeseen circumstances’ and dialogue that adds mystery and intrigue so as to drive the narrative forward. What we have here is long drawn out sequences with bland mundane pointless dialogue that does not serve any purpose, of the sort written by pathetic script writers one regularly encounters in TV ‘soap operas’. We also encounter a ‘text dialogue’ (lifted straight from the BBC series ‘Sherlock’) – but the producer and director clearly did not realise that the film would be released in ‘small-screen’ format because the text is miniscule and totally unreadable – so it fails miserable on two fronts: if there WAS an intent to convey information it did not and could not do so due to the physical size of the font; and if it was inserted as a ‘fill’ to ‘pad out’ the action then the unreadable snippets do not serve any purpose or function and add frustration - and so serve as yet another distraction to constantly ask the question ‘when - if anything - is anything going to happen?’ – which is the ‘driving force’ behind GOOD story-telling – and the failure to DO this is the reason why 98% of films, plays, and books FLOP and the books and digital media ends up being dumped in charity shops – and why people vote with their feet and walk out of films half way through. After three separate attempts to overcome the mind-numbing boring mundaneness, I did eventually persevere and reached the inevitable predictable conclusion. On the way I observed several ‘missed opportunities’ to bring suspense and reveal the terror and horror of being stalked by a sick-minded fiend – one notable scene being the scene where the protagonist is disturbed in the shower by the antagonist – who has had her flat keys cut and let himself in to her flat so as to enforce his depraved ‘will’ on the protagonist – who we learn in the first scene is not very bright from the lengths her flatmate takes to explain to her how to get to a venue – and later when the protagonist gets soaked because she does not have a coat, or the sense to go into Poundland to purchase a brolly – and so she succumbs to the terror of the antagonist - and does not report the antagonist to the police. This scene COULD have been a classic Hitchcock ‘Psycho’ moment or it could have resulted in the Hitchcock ‘Dial ‘M’ for murder’ plotline – but it didn’t. A second truly upsetting horrific scene – where the vile man sexually assaults and totally debauches the protagonist - so as to terrify her and fully empower her - is the scene that delivers and drives home the message at the EASE in which this vile man accomplishes what he does – all in plain sight of those all around him as he torments and distorts the mind of his prey. The narrative is reminiscent of Noel Coward’s classic film ‘Brief Encounter’ (now fully restored and available on DVD and BluRay). Many people view ‘Brief Encounter’ as a ‘love story’ – but it isn’t – it is the story of a womanising CON ARTIST who seeks to ‘bed’ as many women as possible – and Coward shows how women with ‘romantic’ ideologies are easily duped.. ‘Fifty shades of Grey’ ATTEMPTS to enlighten women but sadly the ‘long wait’ – filled with mundane TV soap nonsense totally detracts from the CORE message of how easily it is for women to be LURED into entrapments and entrenchments from which there is NO escape. FOOTNOTE: Thanks to the constant effort of Susan Nicholson’s MOTHER, Robert Trigg was eventually tried and convicted and imprisoned for life in 2017 - SIX YEARS after he committed his vile crimes. BE WARNED! Sussex Police did not consider the deaths as ‘suspect’.

A masterpiece

Like others I'd talked to (as well as by the few reviews of the novel) about the film, few of whom had been complimentary, I decided to take a chance and see what all the fuss was about - and, by gosh, I'm glad I did. The film is a stunning work of art (I speak as one who has made 13 films myself, though none with Sex, so do know something about the art and craft, thus do have an 'informed' opinion), but it needs delving into via the extras on the disc to appreciate fully, and then glory in an achievement by all of those involved, from script-writer (female), to director (female, and brilliant), to both principal actors (wonderful and beautiful as they are), to the extra-ordinary soundtrack, which uses silences so effectively, and yes, even to the sex scenes, done with care, devotion, sensitivity, and so much understanding that one wonders at their creator's amazing skills, and so on... A masterpiece? Yes, and one of the finest in the art of filmmaking, so don't you dare dismiss it (unless you are a born philistine!)

Frustrating !

This has to be the most frustrating film that I have ever seen I loved it and I hated it Obviously,an awful lot of the book had to be left out to fit into the running time, but it should not have been at the expense of the storyline It was crucial to have kept the info in the long email Ana sent while on her way to Georgia, and Christian's response Everything, pretty much, that explained why he is the way he is,was left out The only token piece of info was said to Ana while she was asleep ! Anyone watching the film who had not read the book would think he is selfish, maybe a bully,a control freak for the sake of it When he is not God,it was frustrating ! Having said that, think Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson were perfect casting The red room scenes were better than expected The criticism of Jamie Dornan ,saying he was stiff, too self contained etc in the playing of the role is totally unfair That IS Christian I thought he nailed it Anyone expecting more red room scenes in the unseen version will be disappointed,There is a brief extra scene when Ana gets on the plane to Georgia and the alternate ending ,which is truer to the end of the book

Very Tastefully done, - Like all films of Books, a lot of detail missing, but the Storyline is good.

Was expecting it to glorify the sexual content, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very tastefully done, with only a few adjustments to the story and cutting out, to save time re film making, a lot of the pre-amble introductions of the girls and where was the Housekeeper? (she was one of my favourite characters), it stuck to the story very well. Can't wait for Part 2 of the Trilogy to come out (even though I know what is going to happen, having read the books) the ending of Part one is a cliff-hanger. :-) If you are going to watch this for the Sex scenes, - forget it - Game of Thrones and the Tudors are far more explicit... Casting was excellent, though initially I was disappointed that the Vampire Diaries guy was not Mr Grey after all - though, on reflection, I don't think the Character that Ian Somerhalder plays in VD would have a change of heart like the Character of Grey has.
