While it is best to travel with your newborn only after he is at least four to six weeks old, you may have to do so in case of an emergency or for any other reason. Experts, however, still recommend that you should wait for the baby to be at least 14 days old before flying. And, you need to take extra care and precaution while doing so. Also, check the flight status before you leave for the airport to avoid unnecessary waiting and discomfort for the baby.

Babies are Vulnerable and Require Extra Care!

Small babies are highly vulnerable to any kind of germs and dirt especially when they are going to be cooped up in a flight with many strangers and breathing recycled air for several hours. So, it is best to consult your doctor before flying with your newborn. And if your doctor allows you to go ahead, get ready to take extra care to prevent any kind of infection or ailments. Here are some things to take care of:

  • Check the Infant Policy- Besides checking the flight schedule to find a flight that is not too crowded do check the concerned airline’s infant policy. Most airlines do not allow you to fly with babies younger than 7 days. And in case your baby was born prematurely, the age is counted from the due date and not the actual birth date. Some airlines may also seek you to provide a letter from your doctor. You may not be allowed to travel if you have delivered via the Caesarean section.
  • Check the Airline’s Ticketing Policy for Infants- Check the applicable fare for your baby and buy a ticket accordingly. You may have to get a partial ticket for a baby younger than 2 years and a full ticket if he is two or more.
  • Take Care of Air Pressure- Changes in air pressure can lead travellers to suffer from unpleasant ear popping and this troubles the babies much more than elders. To make your baby comfortable during landing and take-off, ensure that you bottle feed as this will help the adjusting the ear pressure and reduce the ear pain. You can also use a pacifier,
  • Manage Your Baby’s Feeds- Babies need to be fed quite frequently so do not hesitate in breastfeeding your baby regularly. However, if he is on solids or any kind of readymade formula food, you can give him regular drinks of boiled and cooled water during the flight. You will need to carry separate bottles or a flask to store an adequate amount of water to ensure that your baby remains hydrated during the journey.
  • Keep Documents Handy- You need to carry valid documents such as the birth certificate of the baby to prove his age and the mother’s hospital discharge summary. In the case of international travel, you will also need a passport and visa for the baby.

The key to ensuring a safe journey is booking flights as per your baby’s sleep schedule. Choose the timings when your baby is more likely to fall asleep. Also, do check the flight status and reach the airport well before time so that you can avoid long queues and complete the check-in process smoothly.

You will also need to ensure that you keep a good distance from other passengers while boarding and deboarding to avoid disturbing the baby due to the commotion.
