Drug dose times are indicated in Latin abbreviations, i.e., 10 mg BID (meaning twice a day), QD (meaning once a day), qhs (at 'hour (of) sleep) and so on. PRN, on the other hand, means " as needed ...
If the Doc wanted you to read that as: 1 dose as often as every 5 minutes and not to give more than three doses per day then that's what they should have written: "1mg q 5 minutes prn ___ NTE 3mg per 24 hrs". TID and q8hr usually don't mean the same thing. TID means the medication is to be given on the predetermined TID schedule, usually in the AM, mid-afternoon and bedtime.
Example: If a medication is ordered for a Quantity of 1-5 caps, has a Frequency of BID (Twice a Day), and is marked As Needed (PRN), if the medication is administered 2 caps at 08:00, an additional 3 caps will be available to give in Patients | MAR | MAR Administration until 12 hours from the time the first dose of the medication was given.
