Give credits where it's due: Pokimane's online personality wasn't always such a ripe hotbed for controversy.
In her initial years on Twitch, Imane "Pokimane" Anys slowly cultivated a reputation for being one of the first streamers who actually actively engaged with her audience. Chatting with fans, Q&A, giveaways; she was one of the early pioneers of what is now a 'set in stone' trend for streamers.
However, over the years, despite her blossoming career and boasting over four million followers on the platform, Pokimane's online personality and channel have been the subject of a lot of criticism.
Being famous is never truly a walk in the park, and the problems for Poki started to crop up when many started spewing spiteful comments under her social media posts, accusing her fans of being 'simps'.
Simp is a colloquial slang which is a derogatory term referring to men "who are viewed as too submissive toward women, especially online personalities, from whom they hope to achieve some kind of romantic attention for their efforts."
And it has been a growing consensus among many platform visitors, and even some prominent YouTubers, that Pokimane's subscribers and viewers majorly consists of 'simps'. Some of them have even gone as far as going to her social media platforms to type some derogatory comments about her fan base.
This has been going on for years, and Pokimane is no stranger to this. In one of her recent Q&A videos, on the 20th of June (to celebrate 5 million subscribers on YouTube), she talked about the 'simps' issue which for her seems to be kind of getting out of hand.
"I gotta admit, it can be kind of disturbing, the stuff that people say," she said when talking about the hateful comments she gets online.
"Sometimes, just the worst side of people will come out online," she continued, "Because they know that they can't really be held liable for it. Either way, I kind of try to avoid my exposure to peoples' comments all the time, because I don't think it's too good for my mental health."
No matter how overwhelming the level of toxicity there is in the comments that she receives, Pokimane tries to take it in a very positive note, and takes it with an "it is what it is" sort of mentality.
Now, whether you agree with the 'simp' terminology or not, you will at least have to consider the fact that many of Poki's followers tend to go overboard with their love and appreciation of her.
The comments and replies that she receives from a majority of her fans are often cringe-worthy, and some even borderline barge on being creepy.
Take the example of one of her recent tweets on the 15th of February (one day after Valentine's day), where she actually posted, 'happy simp day…'
While the tweet itself is not all that alarming, it's the comments that follow which show an unhealthy level of attention that the streamer enjoys from some of her fan base.
Here is an example of some of the comments:
The thought of donating $6,000 to an online personality is just too insane.
And such a trend has been heavily-represented and criticised by YouTuber It' sAGundam, who took up this very 'simping' culture in Pokimane's stream and made a video out of it. Unsurprisingly, it did not sit well with the 'stream queen'.
On the 13th of May, It' sAGundam uploaded a video titled "Simp willingly goes homeless for Pokimane," which highlights one of the biggest social problems that the online stream universe is facing at the moment.
It' sAGundam raised the issue that there have been more and more people who have been donating ridiculous sums of money to the online personalities they love and adore. He specifically took up the issues with Pokimane and her fanbase.
He highlighted a Twitter user who claimed to have donated $1,000 to Pokimane, even when he was four months behind on his rent. However, he wasn't the only one doing this, as there have been many such donors who couldn't help themselves and donated all they could to the streamer.
Needless to say, Pokimane was furious with the video, and went on to rant about things like "I can't believe anyone would sponsor these shenanigans. Like what? And I will say, for this company to sponsor a video that's literally 20 minutes of talking sh*t about me…You will never see… if you ever reach out to me, if I ever see you in my inbox."
Pokimane did not just stop at criticising the YouTuber, but went as far as to attack the sponsors behind the channel. This led to her receiving a lot of backlash from those in social media, who didn't agree with her stance on the matter.
However, her criticism didn't end here alone, and some even spilt over and surfaced as soon as she decided to sign a deal with Cloak.
On the 18th of June, Pokimane tweeted that she had signed up with a clothing brand called Cloak, as a partner as well as a creative director.
insanely happy to announce i’ve joined @cloakbrand as a partner + creative director 🎨hyped to work alongside @markiplier & @Jack_Septic_Eye 😊❤️💛💚💙💜 pic.twitter.com/jx5TU8vP1M
However, the internet didn't seem to take the news in a positive stride, and Pokimane faced a lot of criticism because of this.
"Cloak" is a clothing brand founded by Mark Fischabach (AKA Markiplier ) and Sean Mcloughlin ( Jacksepticeye ).
Both Markiplier and Jacksepticeye are well-known YouTubers who're famous for playing games like Minecraft, Last of Us and other horror genres.
And after signing with them, Pokimane's Twitter handle was severely-criticised by many, and here are some of the replies:
One Twitter user even went as far as to ask Pokimane about the previous It' sAGundam controversy and stated that the streamer was yet to apologise for taking her anger out on the sponsor.
Sorry to bring this up but what about the stuff she did before. Lose a person big sponser. She went after rigwallet because she thinks she can. Sent her followers to ruin the sponsor. Are we just going to look it over because what? She's pretty? She hasn't apologized yet
For the majority of 2020, Pokimane has been under fire from a lot of critics, and it seems that the 'simps' controversy is slowly snowballing out of control for her.

A recent Twitch leak revealed xQc makes the most from the platform (Image via Sportskeeda)

Twitch.tv got leaked. Like, the entire website; Source code with comments for the website and various console/phone versions, refrences to an unreleased steam competitor, payouts, encrypted passwords that kinda thing. Might wana change your passwords.
some madlad did post streamer revenue numbers tho incase you wana know how much bank they're making before taxes
Twitch has just had a major leak of a lot of stuff including their monthly payouts to streamers. Here are some of the notables (note: this total is just their payout directly from twitch, so it doesn't include donations, sponsors, merch, etc.)
Grabbed Vapor, the codename for Amazon's Steam competitor. Seems to intigrate most of Twitch's features as well as a bunch of game specific support like fortnite and pubg. Also includes some Unity code for a game called Vapeworld, which I assume is some sort of VR chat thing.
Some Vapeworld assets, including some 3d emotes with specular and albedo maps I don't have whatever version of unity installed that they used, so I'm limited in what assets i can get caps of with stuff like blener and renderdoc. There's custom unity plugins in here for devs too.

This Twitch leak, if it's actually legit, is fucking huge. 120GB of data from the last two years, including details of AGS developing a Steam competitor and earnings of all streamers on the platform. Pretty fucking nuts numbers in there.

Twitch has found itself in turbulent waters yet again, as the entire website has apparently been leaked online , as reported by Sinoc on Twitter.
The alleged leak exposed several crucial details, including source codes for the website and its phone and console versions.
On a more serious note, passwords and payment details for high-profile streamers like xQc, Tfue, Pokimane, Shroud, and Sykkuno have also apparently been leaked.
The alleged leak also revealed how much these streamers and their colleagues make every month, and the numbers are mind-bending.
The claimed leaked data reveals how the Canadian streamer has earned the most from the platform since September 2019. xQc has made an 8-figure revenue from the platform over the last two years, and no one else comes close to this mark.
In fact, the former Overwatch pro made upwards of $750K in September, which is more than what any other streamer has made from the platform. summit1g, popular for his GTA RP streams, is second on the list, having made upwards of $350K.
To everyone's dismay, Pokimane made a little over $38K, which is less than Shroud, Sykkuno, and HasanAbi, who made $96,359, $113,896, and 210,946, respectively.
During the Twitch mass exodus , everyone assumed xQc, too, would defect to YouTube Gaming. However, he revealed how he had signed an exclusive deal with Twitch.
According to the apparent leaks, xQc has been the driving force of the platform's success and has received an astounding amount for his contributions.
Amidst all the sensitive content allegedly leaked, several files hinted at an unnamed Steam competitor for Twitch, later said to be codenamed Vapor.
It also includes details about a game titled "Vaperworld".
The so-called leaked files contain sensitive information about the game, including maps and emotes.
Twitch has found itself in rough waters for as long as fans can remember. Several high-profile streamers, including TimTheTatman and DrLupo, have defected to YouTube Gaming, searching for greener pastures.
This breach of privacy not only concerns the streamers on the platform but also makes the platform more vulnerable than it already is.
In addition, this leak comes when the platform is already facing the wrath of streamers and the community for its possible "Boost" feature , which might cause a wedge between big and small broadcasters.

The Twitch celebrity community has been rocked in recent days as a result of allegations made by streamer Fedmyster in a leaked document, in which he accuses his former colleague, Pokimane, of manipulative behaviour .
The document (since deleted ) accuses Pokimane (real name Imane Anys) of using Fedmyster (real name Federico Gaytan) as a “scapegoat” for her own negative treatment of fellow content creators both in the OfflineTV content house, and the similar Just Friends house.
Fedmyster has been lying low over the past few months, after several female content creators at OfflineTV (including Pokimane) accused him of sexual harrassment and inappropriate behaviour. Now, he has been brought back into the spotlight as other streamers debate his relationship with Pokimane
The drama between Fedmyster and Pokimane goes back several months. Both used to live in the OfflineTV house , a home for several prominent Twitch and YouTube content creators.
Fedmyster was accused by two of these creators – Yvonnie and LilyPichu – of inappropriate behaviour, in which he would, while claiming to be drunk, attempt to massage their thighs or touch them under their shirts. This led to his expulsion from the house and his termination as part of the OfflineTV group.
Pokimane, who also left the house at around this time (but stayed a member of the OfflineTV group from a business perspective), stated that she had left in part due to Fedmyster’s controlling behaviour, claiming that he had attempted to manipulate members of OfflineTV house and the similar Just Friends house to view her in a negative light, and that he was spreading false rumours that the two were in a romantic relationship together.
According to Fedmyster, he wrote the newly leaked document to process his relationship with Pokimane, and sent it to a friend for advice in private, who in turn chose to betray his trust and leak it to other Twitch and YouTube stars.
The document makes many claims about Pokimane, including how she allegedly failed to befriend the Just Friends content creators and blamed it on Fedmyster. It also claims that Pokimane called Yvonnie “lazy” and attempted to get her fired.
The most controversial parts of the document, though, are supposed text message screenshots which appear to show Pokimane flirting explicitly with Fedmyster. These texts, the letter alleges, are proof that the two creators had a more intense relationship than Pokimane claims.
Pokimane has responded publicly to many of the allegations made in Fedmyster’s leaked document, arguing against her representation.
Several other content creators, though, including Destiny and Keemstar, have accused Pokimane of glossing over many elements of the document, with Keemstar arguing that she is “vague” on many points, and Destiny accusing her of glossing over the alleged text messages included in the document.
Fedmyster has also made a statement about the document leak, claiming that he and Pokimane had agreed to remain silent on their own disagreements to attempt to spare the streaming community any more drama. With the leaked letter now out in the open, however, it’s unlikely that this particular issue will be going away any time soon.

Former Offline TV member Federico "Fedmyster" Gaitan recently issued a lengthy and revelatory statement online against Imane "Pokimane" Anys.
He has claimed that the Twitch star manipulated and fabricated an entire narrative against him.
In a 25-page statement titled My Truth , Fedmyster threw light on his complicated relationship with Pokimane and how their closeness often became a strain on their friendship.
In another significant revelation, Fedmyster stated that it was Pokimane who wanted fellow Offline TV member Yvonne removed from the house. He also shared incriminating DM's between them, substantiating his claims.
The statement goes into detail, touching upon several aspects of his rocky relationship with Pokimane and its consequent effect on his life as an Offline TV content creator.
Considering that it is 25 pages long, he summed up the crux of his statement in the TL;DR where he revealed that Pokimane used him as a "scapegoat":
this is the TL;DR he wrote pic.twitter.com/vSTe16xUdm
These disclosures against Pokimane were picked up by Twitch streamer Destiny , who recently discussed them in detail on his stream.
In light of these recent allegations, the internet now seems to be divided, as her fans struggle to come to terms with the thought of Pokimane being a "manipulator."
The entire controversy can be traced back to when Fedmyster was one of the prominent members of the famous content creation house Offline TV. That was until 2020, when he was removed after fellow members Yvonne and Lilypichu leveled allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
This was also elaborated upon by Pokimane , who eventually expressed that her complicated relationship with Fedmyster was one of the main reasons for leaving the Offline TV house.
Fedmyster's recent statement also addressed his relationship with the 24-year-old, where he claims that the two were more than friends, as they often indulged in flirtatious exchanges.
He substantiated these claims by providing ample screengrabs of their DM's in his statement.
Earlier this year, Pokimane had also shared her side of the story related to Yvonne and Lily's initial statements about Fedmyster in a detailed YouTube video:
At one particular juncture in the video, she says that it was Fedmyster who used to complain to her about how Yvonne was "lazy" and not working enough.
However, in his recent statement, in the section titled 'Me working with Yvonne,' Fedmyster revealed that it was Pokimane who wanted Yvonne fired.
He explains this in detail in the images below:
Considering the depth and level of detail involved in his statement, it certainly seems to cater to the adage that there are always two sides to a story.
This does not take away any focus from Fedmyster's admonishable behavior in the past, which he claims remains a constant work in progress. Instead, it places Pokimane in a volatile and accountable situation, as her fans have already begun to demand a response from her.
@pokimanelol Honestly, your situation with Fed is word for word what my ex did. You were the one who manipulated and you made him look back for it. This is nothing short of mental abuse, i hope you are ashamed and bettered yourself since.
so ur telling me pokimane invited fed to sleep in her bed (among other things) and told him her door was “always open” just to turn face and out him for being a predator a few months later? right, another W for women in gaming 😎 pic.twitter.com/UfUpUAXSaf
Man... Poki absolutely FUCKED fed... What an asshole... She treated fed like a fucking yoyo, tossing him away when she wanted to date someone else and when it didnt work out, went back to fed. This is next level emotional abuse and she'll get away with it because she's Poki -_- https://t.co/dMm6hnluSY
In fact, Pokimane addressed Fedmyster's statement via a recent tweet, where she stated that she would speak about the situation on stream:
i’ll talk to u guys on stream tmrw 👍🏼
Fedmyster's recent statement has now opened up a whole Pandora's box online. All eyes are now on Pokimane when she finally addresses these incriminating allegations in her stream tomorrow.
