It's official! Age is irrelevant... when it comes to women and beauty that is. Who has THE HOTTEST bikini-clad hard body at this very moment? It's 48 year-old Valerie Bertinelli on the cover of People looking way hotter than she ever did during her peak, One Day at a Time, sitcom days in the '70s.
Who are both men and women getting in a lather about at this minute? It's nude 43 year-old supermodel Cindy Crawford, photographed in nothing but suds for Allure magazine . Her pics have been responsible for over 400,000 page views and hundreds of comments on this site alone in the past couple of days.
Just whose sexy toned biceps have been talked about even more than the new bank rescue plan? 45 year-old Michelle Obama's. Who's got the best legs in America and happens to be our nations' most eligible bachelorette? No contest, it's Jen Aniston, 40. And honestly, do we really care about the trials and tribulations of Lauren Conrad or Paris Hilton's lovelives the way we care about Jen's? Finding Jen's Mr. Right is right up there as a far more enduring national obsession than, say, deploring the Octomom.
Need more evidence that Age has gone the way of the dinosaur? It used to be that the standard Hollywood refrain for Hollywood actresses was that there were boohoo, no good roles, for them, moan moan, over the age of 40. As for magazines: cover models used to be doomed once they hit 30.
And if an actress became a mother, it was the kiss of death, instantly zapping their sex appeal. Society was like Elvis, who couldn't get hot and bothered for Priscilla once she gave birth to Lisa Marie.
Now here's the new evidence: Julia Roberts mom of three, 41, is the much admired star of the new crime thriller, Duplicity. Meryl Streep, 59, and Nicole Kidman, 41, still can't keep up with the roles they're offered. Michelle Pfeiffer, 50, stars as the ultimate cougar courtesan in the soon-to-be released film Cheri. Courtney Cox, 44, is also starring in a new sitcom, appropriately entitled, Cougartown. Salma Hayek, 42, and Sandra Bullock, 44, just rocked on the last two covers of In Style magazine. Oh, and Calista Flockhart, 44, is to be Hollywood's latest blushing bride after finally bringing Harrison Ford to his knees.
Call them cougars or call them MILFS, just don't call them over. Let's discuss Demi Moore, 46, and Madonna, 50. The two Kabbalists are the envy of younger women everywhere. Demi, for her sexy, un-plastic-surgery-looking looks and devoted 15 years-younger, GORGEOUS husband, Ashton Kutcher, 31, who Twittered this shot of her over the weekend, and Madonna for her rock hard body and years younger lovers, A-Rod, 33, and Jesus Luz, 22.
Now, let's just contrast all this hotness and intrigue with the slew of bland 20-somethings, trying to compete to get on magazine covers and into the nation's consciousness. Megan Fox, Jessica Alba, Heidi Montag, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively, Audrina Patridge, Jessica Biel, and even Kim Kardashian, -- do they honestly have even the depth of deep hotness and complexity as our 40-somethings?
Perhaps, the most astounding evidence of our national love affair with the 40-plus woman was illustrated in the Sarah Palin phenomenon. She was 44, a mother of five, and an outspoken conservative, but even her detractors had to admit that she was a Babe with a capital B. Men wanted to take off her glasses and let down her French twist. Women wanted to buy her glasses and turn their dos in her French twist.
And finally, when we learned all the lurid details behind the made-for-tabloid divorce between ever-gorgeous cover girl Christie Brinkley, 55, and her cheatin', lyin' cad of a husband, Peter Cook, the biggest question of all was -- how could he leave HER for a 19 year-old? Now that was a headscratcher!

Last year, Sara Wells and her husband Richard visited Juan-les-Pins, a beach resort in the South of France that’s notorious for being populated by ‘the beautiful people’.
For Sara, it was to prove a pivotal moment. For the first time in her life, the 64-year-old mother and grandmother felt confident enough to stroll nonchalantly on to the baking hot sand in nothing but a bikini.
‘Even though there were plenty of women with figures like models there were also lots of normal women, too — many older than me,’ she says.
Sara Wells, 64, said: 'If you’d told me 20 years ago that I’d feel so phenomenal in a bikini I’d never have believed you'
‘And when French men looked me up and down — as they do — it was because they thought me attractive, rather than on the grounds that they were horrified I had dared to expose my body.
‘Had you told me 20 years ago that I’d have more body confidence in my 60s than ever before, I’d have laughed. In my 20s, I wouldn’t have ventured for an ice cream on the beach without wrapping myself in a towel.
‘But now I feel great because I’m constantly told how beautiful I am and I’m very much enjoying life in a way I didn’t think was possible.’
Do you dare to wear a bikini? The answer used to depend on your age: past 40 and you’d invariably reach for a demure swimsuit instead. However, that’s not the case in this brave new world, as Sara and these other proud bikini wearers will attest.
Faith Halliday, 40, is a stay-at-home mother and says before her children she wouldn't have dreamed of wearing a bikini
The bikini has fast become the barometer of happiness in middle age — or at least a measure of body confidence — and as a professor of health psychology at the University of Surrey, I think it’s heartening that more and more women are taking the plunge.
I put it down to the fact that middle age can be hugely liberating if we let it. You tend to be far less self-critical than you were in your 20s and you possess sufficient life experience to put a few lumps and bumps into perspective.
You know that being good looking (and thin) isn’t the be-all and end-all and, just like Sara, you’ve learned to celebrate what you are, rather than how you look.
When we feel good about ourselves it changes our self-perception. As we age, this feeling can stem from fulfilment in other areas of life, such as work or relationships, rather than just how much we weigh or our dress size.
Pauline Swain, 58, works in events and says that she wears a bikini because it gives her confidence
With such confidence comes a renewed appreciation of how we look — and thus we automatically appear more attractive.
People take us on our own evaluation; feel good about yourself and that’s what is perceived. In youth, you tend to obsess over too-short legs or a too-big bottom without seeing the taut tummy or finely turned ankles. By 45 or so, you accept that while some things can’t be changed, you can make the most of the assets you do have.
On a practical level, our middle years are actually a time when you may finally lose unwanted pounds without trying too hard.
Sustained weight loss often comes about as a result of a trigger; children leaving home (having no children to provide meals for often curbs frequent snacking and eating fast foods), the menopause or even ending long-term relationships can be taken as a positive and offer the potential for change.
Sue Wilkinson, 52, is a yoga teacher and lives in Hampshire, she says that swimsuits are fashionable right now
The older we get, the more we’re open to an ‘improving mindset’, where we’re willing to transform and better ourselves.
That’s not to say there isn’t a hint of competition spurring us on to dust off our bikinis. Women always look at each other, and that doesn’t change with age.
But while there may be a bit of ‘bikini boasting’ going on in celebrity circles, by our age we take that with a pinch of salt.
I’m all in favour of older women braving the bikini. If it prevents the beach from feeling like a place of scrutiny and instead makes it a warm, relaxing sandy spot to enjoy, even better.
Business mentor Nicola Huelin, 45, lives in Chester and says that she has a toned and curvy body
Faith Halliday, 40, is a stay-at-home mother. She lives in South-West London with her husband, Will, 40, a shipping broker and their two children, Zoe, six and Harry, four.
Before I had children I wouldn’t have dreamt of wearing a bikini on the beach.
Now I’ve got a suitcase full of them and, as far as I’m concerned, the skimpier the bikinis are, the better.
I spent my 20s hiding my ‘fat’ tummy in a tankini — a long, tummy-covering two-piece — even though I was a perfectly healthy size 12.
She says she has got a suitcase full of bikinis and, as far as she's concerned she wants them to be the skimpier the better
But becoming a mother totally changed my body image. I was amazed at what my body could do and now I’m so proud of it, I want to show it off to the world.
Putting on a bikini at my age is my way of shouting ‘all this and two beautiful children, too’. Now I’m far less critical of any lumps or bumps.
It’s also made me take better care of myself. I exercise almost every day, doing 30-minute workouts using the instruction videos on the site janeyholliday.com, and make sure to eat really healthily, by having lots of salads and vegetables, for example.
I’ll happily run around on the beach without a cover-up, and can’t wait to see the holiday photographs — something I used to dread.
Pauline Swain, 58, works in events. She lives in Chichester, West Sussex, with her partner, Simon, and has two children.
Why do I wear a bikini? Because I feel confident with how I look. I suppose I do get some attention on the beach when wearing one — but I’m usually on holiday with my partner, so I always give the chaps short shrift! Swimsuits may be fashionable but they make me feel frumpy, and I’ll only wear one to do lengths in the local pool.
She says her body is far less perfect than it used to be that makes her even more happy with it
Now that I’m nearing 60 and have two children, my body is far less perfect than it was when I was younger — my thighs are less firm and my tummy is rounder — but I’m so much happier with it.
I stay active throughout the year, by swimming and playing tennis, for instance, and I am relaxed about revealing the results on the beach.
Most of my friends still wear bikinis, too. We look so much younger than our mothers’ generation did at the same age — we’re not content to cover up in a bid to be ‘age appropriate’.
In my view, if you feel your body is still fabulous, why not show it off?
Sara Wells, 64, runs her own catering company and lives in Leicestershire. She is married to Richard, 58, a company director, and has three daughters and six grandchildren.
She says she's not perfect but she cannot wait to slip into her new floral bikini during her next holiday
If you’d told me 20 years ago that I’d feel so phenomenal in a bikini I’d never have believed you. I was going through a painful divorce and when I looked in the mirror, I saw a haggard woman who appeared exhausted.
There was no question of loving myself in a bikini — I didn’t even like myself fully clothed.
But that all changed when I met Richard four years ago through a dating website.
He was so attracted to me that it gave me a newfound appreciation for my body — flaws and all. We married two years ago, and are blissfully happy. He lavishes me with compliments, and I defy any woman not to start to feel beautiful if they are constantly told how gorgeous they are.
I still take care of myself, too, unlike some women who are my age. I walk everywhere, do the odd sit-up while the kettle boils and make an effort with my hair and my make-up.
I’m not perfect, and my skin is less elastic now that I’m getting older, but I cannot wait to slip into my new floral bikini for our upcoming holiday. Why? Because I know that the man sitting next to me will think I’m the most beautiful woman on the beach.
Sue Wilkinson, 52, is a yoga teacher and lives in Hampshire. She has two children, aged 25 and 26.
Sue Wilkinson started to do Pilates, and she enjoyed it so much that she went on to become a teacher
I know swimsuits are very fashionable now, but it’s one trend I won’t be following. I feel great in a bikini and I’m determined to wear one as often as possible.
It wasn’t always this way. When I had my two children, with only 18 months between them, there was no time to look after myself. I ate whatever was to hand — no matter how unhealthy it was — and had no muscle tone. I looked like a triangle, with wide hips and a skinny upper body.
It was only when the children started school that I had any time to myself. I started to do Pilates, and I enjoyed it so much that I became a teacher.
I also do weight training and cycling, and I am happier with my body than I’ve ever been.
I’d defy anyone who sees me in a bikini now to accurately guess my age. Far from being the stereotypical ‘invisible’ woman in her 50s, I’ve got far too much confidence to want to blend into the background in a boring old swimsuit.
Pauline says that her friends and generation look so much younger than their mothers’ generation did at the same age
Business mentor Nicola Huelin, 45, lives in Chester, with her partner, Graham, 55, a leadership expert, and has two children.
Looking at my toned, curvy body now, you’d never guess that I felt like the stereotypical ugly duckling as a young woman.
I was unhappy with how I looked and didn’t have much confidence. I remember holidaying in France in my 20s and, despite the heat, I never even took my shorts off, although I was desperate to wear a bikini like other women my age.
Things got worse when I got pregnant with my second child. I put on 4st and ballooned to the extent that my French sister-in-law didn’t recognise me when she visited.
Through healthy eating and exercise the pounds gradually melted away. I found a good work/life balance and felt great about myself. Now I am so proud to show off my figure in a bikini.
Company director Sarah Hunter, 54, lives near Norwich, Norfolk, with her partner Jon, 50. She has two children.
When I turned 40 I started to gain weight, but I buried my head in the sand for a decade.
When she went on holiday to Cornwall last year she decided to ditch her lmumsy swimming costume' for a bikini
Just before my 50th birthday, I glanced down at my podgy tummy and resolved then and there to take action. I signed up for a 12-week online fitness competition with Bio-Synergy, which provides sports nutrition (bio-synergy.uk), and, to my utter astonishment, I won.
Of all those who took part, it was my body which showed the greatest transformation.
This competition success inspired me to continue to exercise. I’ve gone from a size 14 to a 12, but most startling has been the transformation in my waist — because now I actually have one!
As my body became stronger I also became more confident in it, which made a real difference.
When we went on holiday to Cornwall last year I decided to ditch my mumsy swimming costume for the first time in years and happily lounged around in my bikini.
A woman on the beach even came up to me and complimented me on how fabulous and toned my stomach was.
When I began devoting more time to exercise, my husband asked if my ‘bikini body’ makeover was for him.
It wasn’t for his benefit, but I’m certainly glad that he likes the results.
At the age of 54 I’ve finally got the sort of defined abs that a woman half my age could be jealous of — and there’s absolutely no way I’m hiding them away in a swimsuit.
