In short time, the code word for their hunt for the free bud became simply, 420. Simple right? But when you thought to yourself, “what does 420 mean?” you should have accounted for the possibility that it is based on five crafty stoners looking for free herb to smoke on.
What is the meaning of 420 friendly? “420 friendly” generally means that a person, hotel or other business establishment is open to letting you smoke cannabis in peace and without consequences.
Historically, 420 friendly has meant that a business or hotel won’t call the police on you if you spark up. However, given the shaky legal status of pot in the past, the term was only as reliable as the person in charge of wherever you were staying.
That said, with the rapidly changing weed laws that are currently rocking the country the definition of what is 420 friendly is changing pretty rapidly.
Whereas before 420 friendly just meant that a hotel or business had a cool manager who was willing to turn a blind eye, there is now the possibility of finding places with actual legal policies in place to ensure that you are able to smoke undisturbed. 
It is important to keep in mind that the way in which the “420 friendliness” of a hotel or business can range pretty wildly depending on where you are staying.
When it comes to the independent business operation of weed legal communities, we are in many ways in the wild wild west. While there are plenty of regulations in place indicating what an establishment can or cannot do, there is also a lot of leeway in which they are given the autonomy to choose how they do things.

Hace unos cuantos años, en su primer viaje a California, Melina Banchero viajó -ella sola y su mochila- a ese país dentro de otro país que es California, en Estados Unidos. Antes de partir de Buenos Aires había reservado un hotel en la ciudad de San Francisco y al llegar, tras muchas horas de vuelo y ansiedad, la recepcionista la recibió con una sonrisa, un guiño de ojo y una frase: “We are 420 friendly” .
Melina, en aquel entonces estudiante de Psicología de la UBA, pudo traducir el significado de la frase pero no su significante. Era un código que no tenía cómo descifrar. Traducido, la chica del hotel le había dicho que allí eran “amistosos con el 420″. Pero la turista argentina no entendió; primero creyó que le daban una habitación especial, la suite cuatrocientos veinte, pero luego, al recibir la llave con el para nada especial 119, se dio cuenta de que no era ese privilegio, sino otro que no estaba a su alcance intelectual.
Durante un instante, entonces, quedó callada, intentó hacer como que sabía de qué le hablaban, pero finalmente, presa de la curiosidad, le preguntó a la empleada qué era lo que quería decir con “cuatro veinte”. “¡Ahhh! Vos sabés, 420″, le respondió en inglés la del hotel, e inmediatamente sacó de abajo del mostrador un “joint”, como le dicen en Estados Unidos, o porro, el apodo con el que se lo conoce al sur de la línea del Ecuador. “Welcome to California”, agregó Viet, la recepcionista estadounidense de origen asiático, y le regaló el cigarro.
Melina no solo había llegado a la cuna del hippismo , al primer estado que legalizó la marihuana en el mundo, sino también a la tierra donde un grupo de adolescentes inventó en 1971 un código de tres cifras que con los años se transformó en el símbolo global de una comunidad segregada que durante mucho tiempo tuvo (y tiene) que hacer todo a escondidas para no ir a prisión: la cannábica.
Todos los 20 de abril, desde hace muchos años, cada vez más lugares del mundo celebran algo así como el “Día de la marihuana” . A las 4.20 de la tarde del 20 del 4 , miles de usuarios de la planta milenaria suben a sus redes sociales alguna manifestación alegórica al cannabis: Instagram se llena de humo virtual y GIFs con dibujitos del 420 animados, algunas radios se animan y pasan reggae, los grow shops hacen descuentos, los raperos como Snoop Dog o Wiz Kalifa o los locales L-Gante , Wos y Duki , entre muchos otros, hacen bandera su “marihuanismo” y el cielo, si se lo mira bien, se pone un poco verde.
420 (pronunciado “cuatro veinte”) es el código universal de la marihuana , un número que no dice nada en sí mismo, pero a la vez ha logrado, a la par que la discusión sobre la regulación del cannabis tomaba cuerpo en todo el planeta, globalizar la conversación alrededor de la cuestión.
Hoy 420 será trending topic. Y no solo porque es 20 de abril (20/4, que en Estados Unidos es 4/20) sino porque se cumplen 50 año s del momento en que, según la versión más confiable, nació esté código entre cinco amigos californianos de la ciudad de San Rafael.
Hay mucha mitología alrededor de esta sigla. Que era el código en que los policías de California se avisaban de que tenían entre manos un delito por consumo de marihuana (”Marijuana smoking progress”), que las 4.20 es la hora del té en Holanda, que son 420 los componentes químicos de la planta cannabis sativa. Pero Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz y Mark Gravich, un cuarteto que en la adolescencia se hacían llamar los Waldos , son los únicos que pueden mostrar pruebas físicas de que algo tuvieron que ver con el tema en cuestión.
De acuerdo con la historia que han contado durante los últimos 20 años, todo comenzó un día de otoño de 1971, época de cosecha , cuando a los Waldos, alumnos secundarios del San Rafael High School, les llegó un dato: un integrante de la Guardia Costera de la península de Point Reyes ya no podía cuidar su campito con cultivo (ilegal) de plantas de marihuana.
El propio agente de la Guardia Costera había hecho un mapa para que pudieran llegar y de alguna manera eso llegó a los Waldos, quienes tomaron la decisión de ir en busca del tesoro , una historia de similitudes a la que se cuenta en el libro Marihuana, la historia , que relata cómo los hippies porteños iban a buscar a fines de los 70 plantas de cannabis al cultivo industrial de la empresa textil Linera Bonaerense , en las afueras de la ciudad de Luján.
Entonces los Waldos quedaron en encontrarse a las 4.20 de la tarde en el monumento a Louis Pasteur de la escuela, ya que a esa hora todos podían llegar a tiempo después de las materias extracurriculares que cada uno cursaba.
