The Memphis Zoo is a world leader in conservation science and is helping to connect people to wildlife. Saving plants and animals in their native habitat requires a careful understanding of their ecology and biology. Zoo scientists are coordinating field studies for endangered species that will make a difference between survival and extinction. While you are visiting the animals at the Zoo, you may not realize there is a whole team of researchers working hard behind the scenes to learn more about their physiology, nutrition, reproduction and behavioral activities. These studies have had a significant impact on breeding, welfare, management and reintroduction programs. Many of us want to make a difference for wildlife, but we aren't sure if one person can really change the world. With more than 16,000 plants and animals on the endangered species list, it can seem a bit daunting. We believe one person can impact the world around them and become a wildlife champion. Despite what they say, being green is easier than you think!

We are working on sustainability initiatives to help reduce the Zoo’s carbon footprint. Many of the green practices we are adopting at the Zoo can be done in your own home. Find out how easy it is to be green and support wildlife in your own backyard.
