Christopher Poole (born c. 1988 [1] ), also known online as moot , is an American internet entrepreneur and developer . Poole is known for founding the anonymous English-language imageboard 4chan in October 2003, when he was a still a teenager; he served as the site's head administrator until January 2015. [2] He also founded the online community Canvas , active from 2011 to 2014. Poole was hired by Google in 2016 to work on the Google+ social network, [3] and left the company in 2021. [4]

Poole was born in 1988 and grew up in New York City . As a teenager, Poole was a member of the Something Awful forum, and frequented the anonymous Japanese textboard 2channel and its offshoot 2chan . [1]

Until 2008, when his name was revealed in The Wall Street Journal , [5] Poole took great lengths to protect his identity, going under the pseudonym of Robert in real life and as moot online. [6] Several journalists noted that the name "Christopher Poole" could be a pseudonym itself, including Lev Grossman of Time and Monica Hesse of The Washington Post . [7] [8]

Poole holds a strong belief towards anonymity on the Internet , having spoke at the TED2010 conference in Long Beach, California about the value of anonymity on the Internet. [9] In a MIT Technology Review piece entitled "Radical Opacity" , Poole was described as being the antithesis of Mark Zuckerberg ; while Zuckerberg is outspoken towards his advocacy for a transparent Internet, Poole advocates for a more opaque Internet. [10]

In 2009, it was reported by The Washington Post that Poole had attended Virginia Commonwealth University for a few semesters before dropping out, and that Poole was living with his mother while trying to figure out how to monetize 4chan. [8]

Poole established 4chan on October 1, 2003, using translated source code from 2chan, and sought to combine the anime culture on 2chan with the community on Something Awful. [1]

In April 2009, Poole was voted the most influential person of 2008 with 16,794,368 votes by an open Internet poll conducted by Time, beating out the likes of Barack Obama , Vladimir Putin , and Oprah Winfrey . [11] It was soon discovered that the users of the /b/ board had manipulated the results of the poll in Poole's favor. [12] Several tools were developed in order to manipulate the results of the poll, such as a website that would vote for Poole at a rate of about 100 votes per minute, and a program capable of voting for Poole at a rate of 300 votes per minute. [13] The other entries in the poll were also manipulated; the first letter of each entry in the poll spelled out an acrostic for "Marblecake, also the game", a reference to the IRC chatroom where Project Chanology was born and The Game , respectively. [14]

In April 2010, Poole gave testimony in the Sarah Palin email hacking trial, United States of America v. David Kernell . As a government witness, Poole explained the terminology on the site as part of his testimony, including "OP" and "lurker". [15]

In 2010, it was reported that Poole had raised $625,000 to create a new online enterprise, Canvas . Among the site's investors were Marc Andreessen and Joshua Schachter . [16] Canvas officially launched on January 31, 2011 in beta , and featured digitally modified images created by users of the site. In contrast to 4chan, users were required to identify themselves using Facebook Connect . [17] A similar app, called DrawQuest, launched on February 8, 2013. [18]

On January 21, 2014, Poole announced that, effective immediately, Canvas and DrawQuest were shutting down. [19]

On January 21, 2015, Poole officially stepped down as the head administrator of 4chan. [2] Two days later, Poole held his final 4chan Q&A. [20] Following his departure from 4chan, Poole began to turn the site over to three anonymous 4chan moderators while looking for a buyer for the website. [21] On September 21, 2015, it was announced that Hiroyuki Nishimura , the founder of 2channel, would take over as the site's owner. [22]

On March 8, 2016, via a post on Tumblr , Poole announced he had been hired by Google in an undisclosed position, [3] a decision that was met with controversy from Google employees, who claimed that Poole's employment at Google contrasts with its claims of diversity . [4] In June 2016, Poole became a partner at Google's in-house startup incubator, Area 120. Poole switched positions again in 2018 when he became a product manager for Google Maps . [23] On April 13, 2021, Poole left Google, after five years at the company. [4]

In November 2012, it was reported that Poole had sent a cease and desist letter to the startup moot.it, citing the similarities between the startup's name and Poole's username, moot. [24]

^ The first Premier 5 event of the year has switched back and forth between the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Open since 2009. Dubai was classified as a Premier 5 event from 2009–2011 before being succeeded by Qatar for the 2012–2014 period. In 2015, Dubai regained its Premier 5 status while Qatar was demoted to Premier status. The two tournaments have since alternated status every year.

Chan Hao-ching ( Chinese : 詹皓晴 ; pinyin : Zhān Hàoqíng ; Taiwanese Mandarin: [tsán.xâu.tɕʰǐŋ] ; born September 19, 1993), also known as Angel Chan , is a Taiwanese professional tennis player. She is primarily a doubles specialist, having won 18 WTA, 2 WTA Challenger and 6 ITF titles in that discipline. Chan reached the final of the mixed-doubles competition at Wimbledon with Max Mirnyi in 2014, her first Grand Slam final. She reached two more finals in 2017, the Wimbledon women's doubles with Monica Niculescu , and the US Open mixed doubles with Michael Venus . She is the younger sister of fellow professional tennis player and former world No. 1 in women's doubles, Latisha Chan , formerly known as Chan Yung-jan . [2]

At the beginning of the season, Chan won the Shenzhen Open with her sister Chan Yung-jan, beating Irina Buryachok and Valeria Solovieva in straight sets. [3] She reached the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters with Janette Husárová , falling to Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina . At the Portugal Open , she won her second title of the year with Kristina Mladenovic , defeating Darija Jurak and Katalin Marosi in straight sets. [4] Chan reached the second round of the French Open with Darija Jurak. She then suffered first round losses at both Wimbledon and the US Open , and also reached the finals of the Southern California Open with Janette Husárová and the Pan Pacific Open with Liezel Huber . [5] She finished 2013 ranked 26th.

At Wimbledon , Chan reached the finals of the mixed-doubles draw with Max Mirnyi to reach her first Grand Slam final. Along the way, they defeated the defending champions Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets. However, the pair lost the final to Nenad Zimonjić and Samantha Stosur , also in straight sets. [6]

Early in the year, Chan won the title at the Thailand Open with her sister, defeating Shuko Aoyama and Tamarine Tanasugarn in three sets. They won their fourth WTA doubles title together at the Western & Southern Open , and by doing so, now have the second largest number of WTA Tour doubles titles for a pair of sisters in WTA history following only Serena and Venus Williams . Cincinnati represents their biggest title yet, their first at the Premier-5 level. Next, they won another title at the Japan Women's Open in Tokyo. [7]

The Chans reached two other finals, at the Pan Pacific Open, losing to Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro , and the China Open, losing to the No. 1 pairing of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza . [8] [9] Hao-Ching and Yung-Jan became the third all-sister pairing to qualify for the WTA Finals after Manuela Maleeva and Katerina Maleeva in 1986 and the Williams sisters in 2009. [10] They reached the semifinals, losing again to Hingis and Mirza. [11] [12] [13] [14] It was Chan's first appearance at the tournament. She finished 2015 ranked 12th, her best year-end ranking so far.

The Chan sisters ended their doubles partnership early in 2017, with Yung-jan teaming up with Martina Hingis, while Hao-ching had a variety of teammates. Hao-ching became only the second Taiwanese woman, following 2013 champion Hsieh Su-wei , to reach the Wimbledon women's doubles final. Playing with Monica Niculescu , who was also making her first appearance in a Grand Slam final, they were overwhelmed 6–0, 6–0 by the pair of Makarova and Vesnina. It was only the second such result in a final in the history of the competition.

During the tournament at Cincinnati, she had arranged to play in the mixed doubles at the US Open with New Zealander Michael Venus. With both having current individual rankings of 12, they were the third seeds for the tournament. Although they knew about each other, they didn't actually meet for the first time until they were walking to the court for their first match together. After four wins on their "lucky" court 17, they were through to the final against top seeds Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray . Outclassed in the first set, losing 1–6 in just 22 minutes, they fought back to win the second set 6–4, setting up a match tiebreaker. With a couple of minibreaks from both teams, it was tied up at 8–8 before Hingis and Murray finally took the match and the title, remaining unbeaten as a pair after teaming up for the first time at Wimbledon two months earlier.

The Chan sisters use Wilson racquets. They are also sponsored by Taiwan Mobile , EVA Air , [15] and French apparel company Lacoste .
