Young exposure associated with need for power over women, older with promiscuity, study says

WASHINGTON — The age at which a boy is first exposed to pornography is significantly associated with certain sexist attitudes later in life, but not necessarily in the way people might think, according to research presented at the 125th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association.
“The goal of our study was to examine how age of first exposure to pornography, and the nature of said first exposure, predicts conformity to two masculine norms: playboy — or sexually promiscuous behavior — and seeking power over women,” said Alyssa Bischmann, a doctoral student at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, who presented the research.

Bischmann and her colleagues surveyed 330 undergraduate men, age 17 to 54 years old, at a large Midwestern university. Participants were 85 percent white and primarily heterosexual (93 percent). They were asked about their first exposure to pornography — specifically, what age they were when it happened and whether it was intentional, accidental or forced. Participants then were asked to respond to a series of 46 questions designed to measure the two masculine norms.
Among the group, the average age of first exposure was 13.37 years of age with the youngest exposure as early as 5 and the latest older than 26. More men indicated their first exposure was accidental (43.5 percent) than intentional (33.4 percent) or forced (17.2 percent). Six percent did not indicate the nature of the exposure.
While the researchers did find a significant association between age of first exposure and adherence to the two masculine norms, the association was different for each.
“We found that the younger a man was when he first viewed pornography, the more likely he was to want power over women,” Bischmann said. “The older a man was when he first viewed pornography, the more likely he would want to engage in playboy behavior.”
This finding was surprising, according to co-author Chrissy Richardson, MA, also from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, because the researchers had expected both norms to be higher with a lower first age of exposure.
“The most interesting finding from this study was that older age at first exposure predicted greater adherence to the playboy masculine norms. That finding has sparked many more questions and potential research ideas because it was so unexpected based on what we know about gender role socialization and media exposure,” said Richardson.
Bischmann suspects that the findings may be related to unexamined variables, such as the participants’ religiosity, sexual performance anxiety, negative sexual experiences or whether the first exposure experience was positive or negative. More research needs to be done, she said.
It also did not matter how the participants were exposed, as the researchers found no significant association between the nature of the exposure and attitudes.
“We were surprised that the type of exposure did not affect whether someone wanted power over women or to engage in playboy behaviors. We had expected that intentional, accidental or forced experiences would have differing outcomes,” said Bischmann.
The findings provide further evidence that pornography viewing has a real impact on heterosexual men, especially with regard to their views about sex roles, according to Richardson. Knowing more about the relationship between men’s pornography use and beliefs about women might assist sexual assault prevention efforts, especially among young boys who may have been exposed to pornography at an early age. This information could also inform the treatment of various emotional and social issues experienced by young heterosexual men who view pornography, she said.

Has this simple Google Image Search for "Anime girls" put enough child porn on your computer to get you in serious trouble with the police? Should we ban Google?

Kotaku is reporting that a major games retailer is stopping selling Dead or Alive: Dimensions , hoping to get it rated MA15+ instead of its current PG. This comes off the back of complaints saying that the loosely-clad young girls that feature in the game are sexualised and under 16 and that this represents child pornography.
The situation raises some very serious questions regarding Australia's Classification system (yet again) and also regarding cultural differences.
Firstly, if the game does feature child porn, why does moving the rating from a PG rating to an MA15+ rating make everything alright?
Secondly, the game represents classic Japanese-style anime (cartoons). If Australia classifies this game as child porn, then it is classifying the bulk of one of Japan's main cultural outlets as prurient and abhorrent.
Millions of Japanese tourists and business travellers come to Australia every year. Many of them will be bringing similar content with them in comic books (manga) and on phones and laptops. Are we really going to pressure the Classification Board into classifying a huge chunk of a country's population as deviants? Or is it a cultural difference?
If you perform a simple Google image search for "anime girls", Google will deliver to you hundreds of pictures of sexy anime characters. Or child pornography.
It should be noted that in addition to Japan itself, anime and manga comics are hugely popular throughout the world and are arguably one of the most dominant sub-cultures online. The notorious 4chan , with over 20 million visitors per day, is founded on Japanese sub culture and it's just one of many websites that discuss and swap anime. Is all of this to be vilified too?
Is Senator Conroy's internet filter needed more than ever? Is it possible to even catch or even police all of this stuff? Should we be accepting it as a cultural difference? Is likening this to child porn diminishing the seriousness of real child rapists and pederasts?

How often do you watch porn? And would you consider that a healthy amount or are you compulsive about it?
Watching porn has become the norm for many who use it to spice things up in the bedroom or while away lonely nights.
But new research suggests that not all porn viewers are the same and, instead, can be split into three groups.
What’s concerning, though, is that only one of those groups is considered healthy.
A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine revealed there are recreational, compulsive and distressed porn viewers.
Recreational viewers account for 75 percent of all participants in the study, watching an average of 24 minutes of porn a week.
This group consisted of mainly women and people in relationships.
It was closely followed by the distressed group, who watched porn for the least amount of time – about 17 minutes per week.
As the name suggests, the distressed group associate their emotional distress with watching X-rated material.
Then there is the compulsive group.
This group may have made up just 11.8 percent of the participants, but watched a staggering 110 minutes of porn per week.
Researchers discovered that men were more likely to fall into this category.
The experts from Université Laval in Quebec who conducted the study said only those who were recreational viewers were healthy porn watchers.
To conduct the study, the researchers asked 830 people to report how often they watched porn, then measured it against how compulsive their porn habits were and their level of distress while viewing porn.
Recreational users reported higher sexual satisfaction and lower sexual compulsiveness, avoidance and dysfunction.
Compulsive users experienced lower sexual satisfaction and dysfunction and higher sexual compulsiveness and avoidance.
Those who were highly distressed but watched porn less were sexually less satisfied and reported less sexual activity and more sexual dysfunction and avoidance.

The experts concluded that the study “confirms the existence of recreational and compulsive profiles but also demonstrates the existence of an important subgroup of not particularly active, yet highly distressed consumers.”
But while the majority who watch porn appear to be able to do so in a healthy manner, it can be a problem for some.
It is still not classified as a true addiction, but some researchers believe a person can become addicted to watching porn in the same way they can become addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Others argue that there is not enough evidence to support it being treated as an addiction.
