Netflix has quite a lot of options now for anyone who is into action , sci-fi , or even shounen anime . Even other major anime genres like Shoujo and Ecchi have been getting quite a few updates on Netflix these days. But one sub-genre that is yet to catch up with the others is “ Yuri “. Also referred to as Shoujo-Ai, this genre primarily focuses on the lesbian relationships of the characters. There is a lot of classic Yuri anime out there that solely focus on the romantic relationships between their female characters. But only very few such anime are available on the streaming giant. With that said, here’s the list of top Yuri anime that are available to stream on Netflix right now:
Hyakkou Private Academy is unlike any other school in Japan. Its unusual methods of preparing its students for the real world are so popular that almost all the children who belong to rich families, try to get a place in the elite institute. But what really makes this place so great is how it makes gambling literally a part of every student’s curriculum. While all the kids at school learn about gambling and money manipulation for the sake of getting good grades, a new transfer student named Yumeko Janani is actually passionate about it. She loves gambling to an extent where it even turns her on sexually.
‘ Kakegurui ‘ is known for having fanservice that perfectly fits its intense tone and though it may not be too direct about it, the anime also hints towards lesbian relationships . Almost all the main gambling characters are female and even the few who are male are horrible at it. While the show does not suggest any kinds of romantic relationships between the male and female characters, it boldly represents some sort of sexual tension between the female ones. One female character even touches herself thinking about the protagonist, Yumeko. All the episodes are accessible for streaming here .
Now ‘Bleach’ is not a typical yuri show, and the series hardly needs any introduction as it is considered one of the best anime ever made, but it does have yuri elements. Chizuru Honsho is a lesbian character in the series who shows an active interest in Orihime. She is physically attracted to her and does not shy away from expressing her feelings. The playful sexual interaction between them lasts for several episodes. Even though Orihime declines his advances, Chizuru can’t stop chasing her. In case you wish to watch their sweet relationship, then you can watch all the episodes here .
Set in the year 2015, ‘ Neon Genesis Evangelion ‘ shows a world that has been taken over by Angels. A special organization called the Nerv is humanity’s last hope as it has been able to design giant robots called Evangelions, that are capable of defeating these angels. What follows is the story of a 14-year-old boy, Shinji Ikari, who later proves to be one of the greatest Nerv pilots ever and in one way or the other, the entire fate of humanity rests solely on his shoulders.
‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ is no way a typical Yuri. But during a time when LGBTQ representations were almost non-existent in pretty much any form of media, it created a huge impact through its portrayal of a queer relationship. This is one reason why the Netflix English Dub of the anime was highly criticized as it seemed like it had erased queer subtext between the two characters. As groundbreaking as this anime has become today, its Netflix censorship is still a huge concern for many. Many queer fans are still expressing their hate towards how Netflix tried to change the entire context of the conversation between the characters just to make sure that it is interpreted as friendship instead of romance. You can watch the anime here .
‘ Fate ‘ is a huge franchise that revolves around Holy Grail Wars where strong magi battle against each other to get their hands on the powerful holy grail. ‘ Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works ‘ covers the fifth Holy Grail War where Rin Toosuka, the protagonist, aims to win the war with his servant Archer. But things don’t go as planned when one of his classmates, Emiya, ends up summoning a servant of his own and joins the war. The two temporarily form an alliance to face the other strong magi involved in the war but in the end, there can only be one winner.
Pretty much like ‘Fairy Tail’, ‘Unlimited Blade Works’ has a fair bit of fanservice and romance but none of it is really directed towards any specific lesbian relationships. However, there is one specific scene where Rin tries to get it on with both Shirou and Saber while claiming that they must have some “physical contact” with each other as a pre-game ritual. While the anime still holds itself back with this scene, the original visual novel has quite a graphic representation of the scene. The anime is accessible for streaming here .
On the surface, ‘ Little Witch Academia ‘ is a typical “ cute magical girl ” anime that is mostly for kids . But it packs a lot of fun and also has a very nostalgic animation style that can be enjoyed by pretty much everyone. It shares a lot of similarities with the world-building of the ‘ Harry Potter ‘ series. But unlike ‘ Harry Potter ‘, each of its episodes have individual stories with no prominent antagonists of any kind.
Somewhere in the 8th episode, it is somewhat hinted that one of the main female characters named Sucy may have a crush on her friend Akko. Many fans have even started discussing this on anime forums and some have even created their own versions of fan art revolving around it. Unfortunately, the anime never dives too deep into this, but it definitely is Studio Trigger’s way of Yuri-baiting its fans. The anime is available here .
‘ Devilman Crybaby ‘ is one of the most recent titles in Netflix’s growing list of originals. In quite a short span, the anime has gained a lot of popularity, not just because of its interesting concept, but also due to its portrayal of graphic violence and nudity . The show centers around two male characters where one of them is a human possessing the strong exterior of a devil, making him the “Devilman Crybaby”.
There are no obvious lesbian relationships in this show but the reason why it made the list is because of its depiction of a potential gay relationship between the two main characters. And if you’ve got a good memory, you might also recall this one supporting character named Jun Lan who was in a lesbian relationship with the swimming teacher, Aoi Kurosaki. Near the end of season 1, she even manages to become a Devilman, so she might have a more significant role in the next season. Only time will tell if the anime would be further exploring her sexuality or not. You can watch the show here .

I am a recent convert to manga, especially yuri or lesbian manga. If you’re also new to the format, you might want to start with my earlier post, Lesbian Manga and Yuri Manga: What’s the Difference and Where Should You Start? Yuri is usually defined as manga (or anime) that includes an F/F romance or lesbian subtext. Lesbian manga, on the other hand, is manga with characters who ID as lesbian: no subtext here! While I enjoy yuri manga, I especially appreciate LGBTQ manga that actually addressed queer identities and real-life experiences, not just girls blushing at each other — though there’s a place for that, too!
Unfortunately, lesbian manga and LGBTQ manga in general is harder to find, as is any lesbian or yuri manga with adult main characters. Yuri manga continues to be dominated by schoolgirl stories, which makes sense if you are familiar with the history of the genre. It’s also historically been more acceptable in Japan for girls to “play” at romance with each other (especially in all-girls schools), with the expectation that they would grow up to be with men. This allowed room for romances between girls without having to take those relationships seriously.
Times have changed, though, and we’re starting to see more yuri and lesbian manga that takes its relationships seriously. We’re even seeing relationships depicted between adult women! Here are all the ones I could find published in English — because this is still a pretty limited sub-genre, there are some repeats from my earlier lesbian manga post . This is excluding any titles that are not yet available in English or are only available online: these are all traditionally published books with official English translations.
I’m putting this one first to get it out of the way, because you’ve likely already heard of it. This a manga memoir about a woman dealing with her mental health issues as well as her sexuality. Its huge success has brought with it a few different sequels as well: My Solo Exchange Diary , My Solo Exchange Diary , Vol. 2 , and the upcoming My Alcoholic Escape from Reality . This is the only memoir or nonfiction title on this list, sadly — I’d love to read more like this!
This is my new favorite yuri/lesbian manga series! Miwa and Saeko are two lesbians who bump into each other at college and decide to start dating. They don’t have much in common and their personalities are very different, but they decide to give it a try, because finding other queer women to date is tough. I love the frank conversations and relationships, communication, and sex in this series. They both bring their own baggage to this relationship, and it takes some work and can feel awkward, but they are building something together.
Ayano and Shuri meet in a bar, sparks fly, and the night ends with Ayano going in for a kiss. So when Ayano returns to the bar Shuri works at, she’s initially excited — until she sees that Ayano has a husband in tow. This will likely not be a story for everyone, depending on how you feel about cheating, and especially stories that might touch on the the trope of a bisexual person cheating. Ayano is immediately upfront about her experience with her husband, though, so there isn’t any sneaking around. Ayano is trying to explore her sexuality and identity in her mid-30s. If you’re okay with a little messiness, give this one a try — it’s from the same mangaka as Wandering Son and Sweet Blue Flowers .
This is another one of my favorite lesbian/yuri manga stories. It’s a short read: not only is it one volume, but there’s also a short story added onto the end. It’s about Machi, a woman who is tired of her parents constant attempts to get her married off. When a friend from high school needs a place to stay, she convinces Machi to let her move in and get a legal partnership so that her parents will stop trying to pair her off. The marriage of convenience soon develops into something else, though. There are a few moments of possible consent issues, but much less than I’m (sadly) used to seeing in yuri manga.
When Mayumi’s fiancé leaves her for a woman she thought was a friend, she packs up her life and moves to a rural Japanese village. There, she meets Rin, her landlord — who is immediately obnoxious. Despite Mayumi’s ignorant assumptions about rural life and Rin’s general rudeness, they begin to become reliant on each other. They are both dealing with the aftermath of trauma, something that left Rin raising a child on her own. This is from the same mangaka of I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up, and both include a perhaps excessive amount of boob jokes, while also dealing with relationships between two complicated and sometimes abrasive people. Content warning: the first volume includes a kiss between half-sister side characters.
Don’t let the cherubic faces fool you: this follows two adult women. Kei and Emi meet at a night club. Emi
