Emily the Criminal. One of the best movies I saw all year, hands down. Gritty and stylish in a Michael Mann/Collateral kind of way, which is really saying something.
Lost in Translation. I loved this movie in my mid-20s (like everyone), but in my mid-40s it left me with something more like loathing. How did I ever think these superficial, (God help me for using this word) privileged, snobby, pretentious, borderline-racist dipshits were "deep"? And they kiss in the end?? Gross.
The Abyss: Special Edition. After loving and regularly rewatching this for 25 years, I was over the moon about seeing this in the theater for the first time. But instead of being exciting, tense, and awesome, it felt disjointed, sluggish, and silly. The sound seemed somehow off and the lights in the theater weren't all the way down... maybe that was enough to ruin it? Or could I just have suddenly "aged out" of one of my favorite films? Either way: no fair!
