If I could only leave a few words on this review it would be : "Stuffed Mozzarella Portabello "Shroom" Burger .. Holy Crap!" ...but thank god I can say more because I talk a lot and that would just be hard. I dragged my lucky date to the last night of OTG Fort Mason, which was in fact my first time there, (i Know crazy, right) and I had one mission in mind.. get a few bites from 3-Sum. As soon as we walked in I was on a hunt. Felt like striking gold when I spotted it. Thanks to the OFT insta page for posting the most beautiful yummy picture of the burger a few weeks back to cause my urgency. We tried the fried mac and cheese rolls with the burger. I was a bit sad for not realizing the mac and cheese spring rolls were made with bacon inside =( oh well Sadly, I split the burger with my date.. (confirmation that he really is lucky and I am amazing) Ah the burger.... My love for good veggie burgers is HUGE and this, I'm almost positive, made my top 3! What more can I say.. GO GET IT!!!!!
FIVE STARS FOR THE MAC AND CHEESE SPRING ROLLS!! That is the only thing i've tried here and because they're so good, they deserve their own review! My bf and I were walking around Off The Grid at Fort Mason looking for small bites and appetizers to share for dinner. I love anything with mac and cheese, so when I saw 3-sum Eats Food Truck's menu with mac and cheese spring rolls, I didn't hesitate to point them out to him! Although they are a bit pricey (2 for $6), I would totally order these again. They came out piping hot with a cheese fondue sauce a few minutes after we ordered. After dipping into the cheese sauce, I took my first bite and I was blown away! The cheese sauce was creamy and hot (my only gripe was that the container that held it was a little smaller than the roll, so I had to pour it on haha), the outside of the spring roll was crispy and light, and inside was the perfect mac and cheese!! Seasoned well, noodles were cooked to ideal softness, and the cheese was smooth. Whenever i'm back at Off The Grid and 3-Sum Eats is there, i'm definitely getting these again!
It's really awesome to see 3-Sum Eats back up and running again as they're currently operating at Off The Grid Fort Mason for the 2015 season. If you've read my review from Market & Rye, then you'd know how devastated I was when Ryan Scott ceased operations of his food trucks 2 years ago ( bit.ly/18QPHqc ). While they did carry over some favorites to M&R (Fried Chicken Sandwich, BLT), there were a lot of 3-Sum Eats exclusive menu items that they didn't include which I really missed. Also, It was a lot more convenient for me that 3-Sum Eats was always nearby my neighborhood whereas driving up to Market & Rye was a little out of my way. So when I saw 3-Sum Eats on the 2015 vendor list for OTG Fort Mason, I was thrilled!! For opening night at OTG Fort Mason (3-6-15) they brought back a lot of favorites to their menu ( bit.ly/1FdcN7j ) including: Cornflaked Crusted Fried Chicken Sandwich Brown Sugar Pepper Rosemary BLT Fried Mozzarella Stuffed Shroom Burger Mac & Cheese Egg Rolls w/ Cheese Fondue Dipping Sauce Deep Fried Brussel Sprouts Kitchen Sink Cookie What I like about 3-Sum Eats is their diverse menu every time they come out which caters to both carnivores and vegetarians. Because I'm celebrating Lent and OTG Fort Mason falls on Fridays which I can't eat meat, this was the perfect truck for me. I went with the Mac & Cheese Egg Rolls and Fried Mozzarella Shroom Burger. Both of which are not available at M&R. Mac & Cheese Egg Rolls w/ Cheese Fondue Dipping Sauce -- bit.ly/1BgJH4g Taking my first bite from one of the Mac & Cheese Egg Rolls definitely brought me back to why I loved this truck in the first place. Light and crispy on the outside, cheesy goodness in the inside. And if that's not enough cheese, dip that sucker in the Cheese Fondue Dipping Sauce. So goood!! Fried Stuffed Mozzarella Portabello "Shroom" Burger -- bit.ly/1BDgD6Y 1000 Island Dressing, Pickled Red Onions, Tomatoes, Field Greens, on Brioche Bun This was also an old favorite of mine, which is actually considered one of their "classics" because it was available during their first couple months of business and then suddenly disappeared. How can you not like a deep fried stuffed portabello?? It's just awesome. If you're a fan of Shake Shack, this will definitely bring you back since it's made in a similar style to their Fried Mushroom Burger. As you can see from the pic, it's a pretty substantial burger. I can't wait for Lent to be over so I can go back and have their BLT and Fried Chicken Sandwich again. As well as their Chicken Reuben which I'm really curious about. Hopefully it'll still be on the menu by then. I do hope that 3-Sum Eats takes their business beyond OTG Fort Mason and go out to other Food Truck markets, especially down to the peninsula like the good ol' days. Welcome back!
Seriously, this 3-SUM Eats truck really makes me mad! Because I can't eat their food on a daily basis or my lifespan would decrease with every bite. Their food is just too good! I somehow feel like I owe it to myself to write a massive review update for 3-SUM Eats since the last time I reviewed it talking about out how CRAZY GOOD their BLT and Cuban Pulled Pork sandwiches were (See earlier review below). Well 23 check-ins later (and still counting) I can say that there really isn't anything bad on their menu. Everything they have is just ridiculously good! Here's the thing that I think separates 3-SUM Eats from the other trucks. Just when I thought I tried everything on their menu, they would add something new to the menu almost every week. And that not only annoys the hell out of me because I have to try something new, it just makes picking a sandwich from them even harder when I line up to order! So here's my gallery of good eats from them: (WARNING! Reader discretion is advised as the following section will make you hungry! It can also make you drool!) Corn Flake Crusted Fried Chicken Sandwich ($8) ( bit.ly/1imxGRP ) This is 3-SUM's flagship sandwich. You'll always see this on their menu and it's usually the first to sell out! Also, this sandwich is HUGE! Two pieces of Cornflake Fried Chicken with coleslaw. It doesn't get any better than that!! Mac N' Cheese Spring Rolls ($6) ( bit.ly/1Hbsrzd ) This is one of those things that you have to try because it just sounds so strange. And it works! The Spring Rolls alone are pretty rich and cheesy and the Fondue Cheese Sauce just adds to more cheesyness to them. Even though this is on their Appetizer section of the menu, this can really be considered a meal. Worth trying!! Philly Cheesesteak Pot Stickers ($5). ( bit.ly/1HbsuuV ) This is another thing that's worth trying. The Pot Stickers are almost like raviolis. And the Veleeta Cheese sauce gives it that Philly Cheesesteak taste. Not bad! Fried Stuffed Mozzarella Portobello "Shroom" Burger ($7). ( bit.ly/1HGZtYm ) Best Veggie Sandwich Ever!! Seriously, they take two Portabello Mushrooms, stuff some Mozzarella Cheese between them and deep fried that sucker!! It's ridiculously good!!! Budweiser Braised Brisket Sandwich ($8) ( bit.ly/1MhjCGX ) This was really good! I totally killed this sandwich because the brisket was very flavorful. It's almost like a cheesesteak. Dijon Crusted Turkey Meatloaf Sandwich ($7) ( bit.ly/1A6kYwz ) I consider this sandwich one of their more healthier options since it's not as heavy as their other sandwiches. That doesn't mean it's not good. The turkey meatloaf had a nice garlic flavor and the succotash gave it a fresh taste. Thai Braised Pork Sandwich ($8) ( bit.ly/1HbsRG1 ) This is from their Off The Grid Fort Mason menu. Okay, this is probably the one sandwich from 3-SUM that didn't work for me. It might have been the foie gras overpowering everything. It just left a sour taste in my mouth after eating it. Roast Beef Sandwich on Housemade English Muffin ($7)- Horseradish Aioli, Watercress, Onion Marmalade, Funyuns ( bit.ly/1AQ3SCf ). This is probably my third favorite sandwich from them after the BLT and the Chicken Sandwich. The House Made English Muffin is just too good! A huge stacked pile of Roast Beef and FUNYUNS?? OMG!! This sandwich puts Arby's to shame! I also like how their sandwiches are made to order. I ordered their BLT for my manager who's on a Gluten-Free diet and wanted to use her own bread. Well, here's what they did ( bit.ly/1EztGZh ). They gave the BLT without bread and it still looked awesome! Like a BLT salad! They also have a different type of lemonade (usually mixed with mint basil and some kind of fresh fruit) every day to quench your thirst. It's a great pairing to go with your sandwich. The crew that works here is awesome and I think their ordering system is pretty efficient. And because they take Cash Only, the line moves really fast! To conclude this lengthy review (sorry!), I'd say that when the food is good, you keep coming back for more. That's my case with 3-SUM Eats and it's pretty obvious you can tell why this is my No. 1 Gourmet Food Truck. They're SIMPLY THE BEST!
Curiousity definitely got the best of me when I saw that Chef Ryan Scott's 3-SUM Eats Food Truck was nearby on my Twitter feed for lunch. Based on the awesome pics of their sandwiches on yelp, I couldn't resist the opportunity to try them out. I ordered two sandwiches. Why? Because I totally underestimated the size of them thinking that one wouldn't be enough to fill me up. Man was I wrong! They're both pretty much the size of your fist and come loaded with meat sandwiched in a soft Ciabatta Roll. My pics show the sandwiches in actual size so you can just hold your hand up to the sandwich pretending to hold them just to measure how big they really are. The first sandwich was The Black Pepper & Rosemary Crusted BLT ($8). It came loaded with Truffle Aioli, Tomato Jam, Edam Cheese, Iceberg Lettuce, and oh yeah, a heaping pile of thick, sweet BACON ( bit.ly/1DUWRCi ). Every once in a while you'll encounter a sandwich that will make you giggle with every bite knowing that it's so good, but yet so bad for you. And that's what I experienced when I had the BLT from 3-SUM. BEST BLT EVER!!! Juicy Bacon in every bite bursting with flavor, plus melted Edam Cheese. Pure Bacon Bliss. So GOOOD!! And to add further insult, I also ordered a Pulled Pork Cuban Sandwich ($8). And like the BLT, it was just as huuuuge ( bit.ly/1Fp5GXn ). But while the BLT was awesome, the Cuban was great but didn't blow me away. To be fair though, I did eat it after finishing the BLT, and the Bacon flavor was still lingering in my mouth, pretty much cancelling out the flavor of the Blue Bottle Coffee Rubbed and Pulled Pork. That was my fault. I would order it again though. It's a very hearty sandwich. I definitely had my fill of pork for the day, or rather the whole week! Next time I'm probably going to finish their sandwich lineup with their Corn Flake (or Rice Krispies) Crusted Fried Chicken Sandwich and their Smoked Mozzarella & Truffled Asparagus & Zucchini Grilled Sourdough Sandwich along with their Fried Asparagus. Deep fried paradise! Sadly, the BLT will have to take a backseat for a while as it's too good for me eat very often as my lifespan would decrease week by week. But believe me, I will be looking forward to it! BACON!!!
Finally tried them last night on my second trip back to OTG @ Upper Haight. The line was kinda long but we got to the front in about 15-20 minutes. I heard so much about the Rice Krispy Fried Chicken Sandwich ($8) and knew I had to order it. The Mac N Cheese Spring Roll ($6) got mixed reviews but it sounded so intriguing so we ordered it anyways. The spring rolls were too damn salty..there was so much salt on them & the fondue sauce was just straight up PLAIN! It would've been much better without the heavy hand of salt, but not worth the $6. The Rice Krispy Fried Chicken however was so delish and saved my thoughts on 3-SUM! The breast had the perfect texture and was big and juicy. The sammie was definitely the saving grace. The only other item that stuck out was the bacon sammie, but I feel like I can get a bacon sammie anywhere...but where can you get a Rice Krispy coated fried chicken sammie? 3 stars for now. Can't wait to get another one of those sammies at the next OTG!
A HOT guy that "CAN" cook?!?!? That ALONE should warrant 5 Stars!!! Former Top Chef Contestant Chef Ryan Scott has an impressive resume having cooked at the highly-acclaimed Gary Danko and most recently at Mission Beach Café so when I heard that he was launching a food truck in late 2010, I was ecstatic to say the least. Yesterday, 4.28.11, my friend and I were fortunate enough to try some of Chef Scott's imaginative food truck masterpieces at Off The Grid - Upper Haight. Luckily, we got there a little before 6 PM to beat the lines. One of the friendly staff took our order which was ready in less than 5 minutes. CASH ONLY! Chef Scott's 3-Sum Eats' Menu focuses on 3 Columns: 3 Sandwiches, 3 Sides, and 3 Desserts (varies daily); most of which seem to be a twist on American Classics KICKED up several notches! The food is unique, yet so familiar and something I could imagine being featured on Food Network's "The Best Thing I've Ever Ate" or The Cooking Channel's "Unique Eats". *****OUR 3-SUM EATS***** 1) CORNFLAKE CRUSTED FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH w/ Pickles, Veggie slaw and Poppy seed Dressing ($8): OMFG--BEST CHICKEN SANDWICH EVER!!! yelp.com/biz_photos/BEZY… The cornflake crusted chicken was perfectly fried to a golden brown. The cornflakes created layers of crunchiness throughout the tender and succulently juicy chicken breast. The fried chicken was surprisingly light with not even a trace of grease. The veggie slaw and pickles were the perfect accompaniment adding 2 separate layers BURSTING with crisp freshness and tanginess while the poppy seed dressing gave it a subtle nuttiness. It was a hefty sandwich to say the least and the soft, toasted bun held up pretty well to the multiple layers of deliciousness. 2) MAC 'N CHEESE SPRING ROLLS w/ Fondue Sauce (2 for $6) - SINFULLY GOOD! yelp.com/biz_photos/BEZY… Initially, I thought it would be almost disgustingly rich but I was WRONG! Deliciously crunchy throughout, the spring roll was generously filled with the mac n' cheese filling. The rich, creamy béchamel sauce melded and infused into the al-dente, yet soft elbow macaroni creating a decadent ooeeey goooeyness. The fondue sauce took it over the top adding an additional layer of cheesiness with an ever so light touch of pungency. I don't know HOW Chef Scott and his crew did it, but they managed to turn something rich into something EVEN richer without it being heavy and greasy. Mind-boggling, I know...it's just something that you have to try for yourself to understand what I'm talking about. TIP: Ask for a container of the pickled jalapenos to give the mac 'n cheese spring rolls a fiery, tangy kick! 3) KITCHEN SINK COOKIE - Lay's Potato Chips, Four-Barrel Coffee Grinds, Pretzels, Chocolate Bits, Butterscotch Chips and Toasted Coconut ($3): CAN WE SAY OMFG TIMES 2?!?!? MUST TRY! yelp.com/biz_photos/BEZY… It may sound like a strange combination of ingredients, but all the flavors not to mention layers of textures joined together in perfect harmony. I've never tasted a cookie with such an EXPLOSION of flavors: salty, savory, rich, buttery, carmely, sweet, bitter and nutty. Being delicately thin, the buttery batter can't quite hold up to all the hodge-podge of ingredients, so handle the cookie with the utmost care. CAUTION: This is not a cookie to be eating late at night. I was stuffed at OTG and waited to take a bite of the cookie (ok, maybe two or three) later on that night and I was buzzing from the coffee grinds. 3-Sum Eats is now one of my FAVORITE food trucks and I don't have many. The menu items are well-execu
