3-Month MCAT Study Schedule: Week-by-Week Content and Practice Split

Three months at roughly 25–30 hours a week is the most common MCAT runway, and it is enough — but only if content review is capped. The failure mode is spending ten of the twelve weeks on content review because content review is comfortable and full-length tests are not. The split that works is roughly six weeks content-heavy, six weeks practice-heavy, with the transition happening on a fixed date you commit to in advance rather than when you feel ready. You will never feel ready.

The twelve-week breakdown

  • Weeks 1–2 — Chem/Phys and Bio foundations. General chemistry, physics, and the biology that underpins everything else. Aim for two content sections a day plus the associated practice passages. Every topic gets logged the day you cover it, because you are going to owe it a review on days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30.
  • Weeks 3–4 — Biochemistry. Biochem is the highest-yield content on the exam and deserves disproportionate time. Amino acids, enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways. Your week 1 topics come back for day-14 and day-30 reviews here.
  • Weeks 5–6 — Psych/Soc and Organic Chemistry. Psych/Soc is almost pure recall and rewards spaced repetition more than any other section — it is the section where the review schedule literally is the study method. Orgo is narrow: reactions, mechanisms, spectroscopy.
  • Week 6, end — Hard transition. First full-length under real timing. Whatever the score, content review is now capped at 25% of your weekly hours for the rest of the plan.
  • Weeks 7–10 — Practice-dominant. One full-length per week, plus daily timed passage sets in your weakest section. The other four days are spent reviewing the full-length in depth and doing targeted content repair on what the test exposed — not on what feels shaky.
  • Week 11 — Peak volume. Two full-lengths, spaced four days apart. This is the last week to learn anything new. CARS daily, without exception, because CARS decays faster than anything else if you stop.
  • Week 12 — Taper. Last full-length no closer than five days out. Then light review of your error log and high-yield sheets only. Two days completely off before test day. Sleep is a score input.

The hard transition at the end of week six is the whole plan. Everything before it is building the material; everything after it is learning to use it under a clock. Students who let content review bleed into week nine are the students who score below their practice average.

The spacing intervals that do the work

The single highest-leverage thing in any study schedule is when you revisit a topic, not how long you sat with it the first time. The interval pattern that survives contact with a real calendar is:

  • Day 0 — first pass. Read, work problems, take notes. Expect to feel like you know it. You do not yet.
  • Day 1 — first review. Short, 10–15 minutes. This is the review that stops the 24-hour cliff.
  • Day 3 — second review. Do problems, not re-reading. Re-reading feels productive and is not.
  • Day 7 — third review. By now you should be able to reconstruct the topic from a blank page.
  • Day 14 — fourth review. Mixed in with other topics, not blocked.
  • Day 30 — final review, or the nearest date before the exam if there is not 30 days left.

Each review is a fraction of the original session — roughly 20% of the initial time. That is what makes the whole thing fit. Six touches on a topic costs about twice a single session, and the retention difference at test time is not subtle.

The reason people do not do this is purely bookkeeping. If you cover 40 topics, you are tracking 240 review dates by hand. That is the arithmetic that kills the plan in week two.

Four ways these plans die

  1. Front-loading the hard content. Putting the worst topic in week one feels virtuous and means you review it once and never again. Hard topics need to be early enough to get four review touches, which usually means the first third of the runway — not day one.
  2. No slack days. A schedule with seven study days a week has a 100% failure rate, because the first missed day cascades into every subsequent one. Build in one or two empty days per week explicitly labelled as catch-up. They will get used.
  3. Re-reading instead of retrieving. If a review session does not involve producing the answer from memory, it is not a review session. Cover the page. Write it out. Then check.
  4. Measuring hours instead of topics. Hours logged is a comfort metric. Topics covered and topics reviewed on schedule is the metric that predicts a score.

MCAT-specific: your full-length review should take longer than the full-length itself. A seven-hour test deserves eight hours of review across two days. If you are taking a test on Saturday and another on Wednesday, you are collecting scores, not improving.
