3-Axis vs. 5-Axis CNC Machining: What You Need To Know?
RP WorldWhat Is A CNC Machine?
A CNC machine (commonly referred to as a “computerized numerical control”) is a type of industrial robot that uses computer technology to perform repetitive tasks. These machines are programmed to follow specific instructions and use tools to cut, drill, grind, shape, or polish materials.
The first thing to mention about 3-axis vs. 5-axis CNC machining is that they both have their own advantages and disadvantages. A 3-axis machine is cheaper than a 5-axis machine, however, it is not as accurate. On the other hand, a 5-axis machine is more expensive than a 3-axis machine, however it is much more accurate. So what should you choose? Well, if you are looking for something cheap and quick, then go with a 3-axis machine. If you are looking for something that is going to last longer, then go with a 5-axis machine. However, keep in mind that a 5-axis machine will cost you around $15,000-$20,000 while a 3-axis machine will only cost you around $8,000-$10,000.
3-Axis Machine:
A 3-axis machine is basically a computer controlled milling machine. These machines use a spindle head that spins at high speeds (up to 20,000 RPM) and uses a tool called a cutting insert to cut away material. Cutting inserts are attached to the spindle head and are designed to remove specific amounts of material depending on how fast the spindle head rotates. There are two types of cutting inserts; single point and double point. Single point inserts are designed to remove small amounts of material, whereas double point inserts are designed to take larger chunks out of the work piece.
5-Axis Machine:
As mentioned before, a 5-axis CNC machining machine is more accurate than a 3-axis CNC machined. A 5-axis machine is able to move along three axes simultaneously. This means that instead of having just one axis spinning, the machine now has five axes moving at once. Each axis moves independently of each other, meaning that the machine can rotate, translate, and tilt its way through any shape.
There are many different types of 5-axis machines, including horizontal mills, vertical mills, horizontal lathes, vertical lathes, horizontal turning centres, vertical turning centres, and turret lathes. All of these machines are capable of making complex shapes and removing large amounts of material. One major disadvantage of a 5-axis machine though is that it is much more expensive than a 3-axis machine.
