Yes i know, it’s an old topic, and I am aware this is reddit so I will probability get a lot of shit for this. But it really isn’t what you think it is, so bear with me.
I recently got into the series and I have to say that Nier: Automata has to be one of my favorite games of all time.
One person I know said he couldn’t stand it because of 2B’s design. So I was wondering what you guys thought. Did you think it was a bit much? Is there a problem with having sexualized female characters especially considering Taro admitted it was fan service? If any of you are female, did it make you uncomfortable?
I learnt about the memes after I played the game. Your friend is heavily overreacting - 2B is everything BUt provocative, promiscuous or suggestive. Anything she 'shows' is a matter of lack of giving a single eff about her looks in action.
I am 100% straight female and to me it was actually pleasant to for once play a character that is simply "ideal" in looks. Not only about her looks - grace of every step, beauty of her movement. Her figure isn't "oversexualized" - in fact she's pretty correct in proportions, unlike what some fanart make out of her. Everything about her presentation was just so appealing! And that she's so visually aesthethic - isn't that good? Yoko Taro might've simply aimed for a possibly most attractive character, maybe to pull a joke on a player in meantime, but it befits her image as a "perfect doll" soldier.
I cannot possibly see any reason to diss her looking good - aside of jealously and/or pissed-of lads dreaming of overweight, rough, antifeminine protagonist. I'll spend my days being pleased by look of beautyful things instead - and maybe she'll like it too. Humans like beautyful things in their surrounding.
Interesting. I guess it is all based on perspective and nothing is inherently offensive
I'd like to see this friend of yours play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 lol
So, women robots are not allowed to be sexy? Isn't that a bit puritanical? What is wrong with sexiness?
I think that your friend needs less "-ism"s in his life.
IMO no, not even close, but it depends on a person I guess :v
What if I told you, sexy hot 2B is what made me buy the game initially
I am female and I‘m pretty gay (well, bi) so I kinda welcomed her design lol
Nah but seriously, it didn‘t bother me at all in this game. She is such an amazing character and it‘s not like she really walks around half naked or something. Her dress is very elegant, and while there is fanservice, I didn‘t feel it was damaging to the overall game. Which is the case in some games with stupidly sexualised character designs imo. Plus the male charcters were pretty hot in Automata, too. At least the machine bois.
It wasn‘t bothersome at all and didn‘t mess with the experience. 🙏🏻
PS: Sorry for all the downvotes you‘re getting. You were always civil and logical in your replies. Reddit dudes just can‘t handle their salt sometimes.
I wouldn't say there's anything inherently wrong with a sexy character. But even then I don't think 2B is overly sexual in design unless you figure out the self-destruct thing. At best you could say some things are impractical (such as how she runs, fights, and jumps around in heels), but I just chock that up to aesthetics.
And when I played through route A I can honestly say I never got the impression she was trying to be sexy. She was who she was and just happened to look pretty.
So far the biggest issue with 2B that I've heard from girls playing isn't her ass, it's the fact she fights in heels (especially in the desert). The isn't due to heels being inherently sexy, but it's because it's extremely impractical and basically impossible lol.
Sexism, at least in this context, is a made up thing based on biases and society. For example, why don't people have issues with the naked Adam? It's because they've been trained by society (and their own biases, desires, etc), that a naked man is okay, but a woman fully clothed in a short skirt, long boots, and stockings isn't.
I could go on for hours about this, but anyhow: there are reasonable reasons someone might think this way. See the large amount of Japanese entertainment that portrays sexy girls and has little substance beside the sexy girls. After being exposed to this for an amount of time, you might learn that things produced in Japan with sexy girls on the cover are crap with no substance.
Or you might see the clubs and societies that people who consume that entertainment partake in and decide that it's not for you, or maybe that you hate it, or even that you wish all of those people would die.
So it would be hard to convince someone who wants to kill all people who like sexy Japanese-produced fake females to partake in those same actions. (this is an extreme, of course)
And take a look at your own biases. You might have something similar that you can compare to. For example, I hate Disney. I'm convinced it's an evil corporation that wants to milk children (and their parents) of all of their money. This is their top goal. They just happen to produce some alright entertainment to go along with it. So I won't play Kingdom Hearts, no matter how many times people tell me it's amazing. Walking around happily with Daffy Duck in a game is one of the last things I'd want to do (I rank it lower than staring blankly at walls for hours).
As to the point as whether this is an issue: No it's not. Game producers should be able to produce any game that they'd like. Anyone should be able to do anything they'd like as long as they're not physically harming others. Mental harm is mostly crap, but that's for another discussion.
I would seriously recommend kingdom hearts if you can get it second hand tho
The thing about Nier: Automata that makes it different is that while 2B does have that ridiculously short skirt, nothing is made of it or even how she is dressed. No camera pans across her body, no lingering shots at her body, no "ooh look at me" moments, no comments in game on how she was dressed. The game never treats her as an object to be admired, she just is.
You could screw with the camera and point it up her skirt, yes, but that was 100% on the player and had nothing to do with the game.
Compare that to Mass Effect 2, where the camera practically drools over Miranda's body. Or when Ann shows up in Persona 5 and the camera is all "look at her and how exotic she is".
does have that ridiculously short skirt
She actually does not. Look at the character design again - most "revealing" moments happen either when she sprints heavily leaning forward, or via the slit at the front (which is, in fact a touch fanservice-y) It actually kinda annoys me that often, say, cosplayers tend to wear skirts two times shorter than 2B herself does.
You could screw with the camera and point it up her skirt, yes, but that was 100% on the player and had nothing to do with the game.
She shoves the camera away if you do it for too long. There's even an achievement for doing it too many times, where the game straight up asks "What are you doing?"
While I agree with you in general, the default camera settings give you a very fan servicey view when you have 2B climb a ladder. The player didn’t choose that view.
But when I see that specific criticism, I point out that the camera settings can be changed. No one is forced to see stuff they don’t want to see.
White's outfit is actually far more risque than 2B's. Most people just don't notice it cause you don't talk to her that much and when you do her clothes kinda blend with her skin as it's always in black and white.
Bottom line, 2B’s design is intentional because that’s what Yoko Taro likes to look at. He doesn’t need to make up a fake reason or even a cynical profit-oriented reason. He likes what he likes. That said, nothing he says can be taken at face value. There’s always an element of self-deprecating humor and social commentary in what he says. If you’re offended by that, all it means is that your taste in design differs from Yoko Taro’s.
Unless you’re a native of Japan, we’re looking at 2B’s design through our own cultural lenses, and applying standards that aren’t standard in Japanese culture. It’s a bit arrogant to think that ones own culture is superior to Japan’s. Barring an issue of fundamental human rights that transcends culture, who are we to judge?
I agree with point one but not point two.
I don’t agree with such moral relativism. My culture isn’t perfect that’s for sure and there are many flaws in it, but that doesn’t really justify sexism in other cultures. I’m sure there are things of other cultures you would deem immoral.
We've come a long way from 'Samus is a woman' to 'Does 2B have a butthole?'
