Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.
Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This value is the total of all its leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be modified to upgrade an item.
It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear as PvP is restricted at lower levels. The average level of an item can be found in the character sheet.
When deciding to purchase or sell equipment players can evaluate the item level. It's an indicator of the item's condition and its quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when looking at a vendor's inventory.
On your PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are a few theories about how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated using formulas that determine how valuable an item's stats really are. no title takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real item level.
However, this isn't the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl since the size of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher value than items dropped in lower-level instances.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game utilizes them in a variety of ways to encourage players not to restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn boosted by the player's level.
The upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with the rare levels will be upgraded multiple times, at higher costs.
Another method to alter the stats of an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Affixes can do things like give the item extra damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or decreasing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.
Currently, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. This procedure will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other rerolling options.
Players can choose to upgrade an item to specific stats or reroll affixes. The possible ranges of stats for an item are based on the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within that range, unless it's an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss of a raid.
Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players a possibility to obtain better equipment in earlier waves and is thus more beneficial in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of an item up to 140.
Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be found in the shops or made with the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..
The luck of an item may influence the success of an upgrade. Each item has a success rate of 25 percent and each item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
