On May 25, 2020, cinematographer Arthur Jafa disclosed the project ahead of time during an Instagram Live video with fashion designer Michèle Lamy. West and Jafa are working on a video for a track from a "future album" called God's Country, according to Jafa.

West had taken up temporary residence in one of the stadium's locker rooms following the listening party on July 21, 2021, turning it into a recording studio to finish the recording and mixing with Mike Dean.

On August 5, 2021, a second listening party for the album was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kid Cudi, a member of West's Kids See Ghosts, tweeted on July 22 that he will not be participating on Donda.

On July 18, West revealed that the album's title had been altered to Donda in honor of his late mother, Donda West, and that the record will be accompanied by a film three days later. West's creative content firm is named after his mother.

In an interview with VladTV on March 7, 2021, Cyhi the Prynce said that West has resumed production on his forthcoming album despite his divorce from Kim Kardashian.
