From January 3 to June 3, 2008, voters of the Republican Party chose their nominee for president in the 2008 United States presidential election. Senator John McCain of Arizona was selected as the nominee through a series of primary elections and caucuses culminating in the 2008 Republican National Convention held from Monday, September 1, through Thursday, September 4, 2008, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. President George W. Bush was ineligible to be elected to a third term due to the term limits established by the 22nd Amendment. In a crowded primary of several prominent Republicans eyeing the nomination, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was the early frontrunner. However, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee won the Iowa Caucuses as he gained momentum just two months prior to the primary. Moderate U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain won the New Hampshire and Florida primaries. After failing to win in Florida, Giuliani ended his campaign. McCain ultimately won the nomination after winning most of the primaries on Super Tuesday. He was officially nominated at the 2008 Republican National Convention on September 4, 2008, but went on to lose the general election to Barack Obama.

The 2008 Republican primaries were the selection processes by which the Republican Party selected delegates to attend the 2008 Republican National Convention. The series of primaries, caucuses, and state conventions culminated in the National Convention which was held in Saint Paul, Minnesota, September 1–4, 2008, where the delegates voted on and selected a candidate. A simple majority of delegate votes in September (1,191 out of 2,380) was required to become the party's nominee; estimates based on delegate pledges had John McCain surpassing this total after the March 4 primaries in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, and Vermont.

2008 United States presidential election in Vermont

The 2008 United States presidential election in Vermont took place on November 4, 2008, concurrent with the federal election in all 50 states and D.C., which was part of the 2008 United States presidential election. Voters chose three representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Vermont was won by Democratic nominee Barack Obama with 67.46%, to Republican John McCain's 30.45%, a Democratic victory margin of 37.01%. Obama carried every county by more than 60% of the vote with the exception of Essex County, which he won with 56%. He also broke 70% in 3 counties. A very liberal Northeastern state, Vermont was the second most Democratic state in the nation, weighing in as a whopping 30% more Democratic than the national average in the 2008 election. Obama's landslide win in Vermont outperformed Lyndon Johnson's 1964 Democratic landslide in the state, making the results of 2008 the strongest Democratic victory in Vermont's history. Vermont was one of three states, along with Obama's home state of Illinois and Biden's home state of Delaware, where his 2008 presidential performance outperformed Franklin Delano Roosevelt in all four of his runs and Lyndon Johnson in his landslide 1964 victory. To date, this is the last time that the towns of Maidstone and Morgan voted Democratic and the last time that the town of Stratton voted Republican.

2024 Vermont Republican presidential primary

The 2024 Vermont Republican presidential primary was held on March 5, 2024, as part of the Republican Party primaries for the 2024 presidential election. 17 delegates to the 2024 Republican National Convention were allocated on a winner-take-most basis. The contest was held on Super Tuesday alongside primaries in 14 other states. Nikki Haley won the primary against Donald Trump, making her the first woman to win a state in a Republican presidential primary, and first nonwhite woman to win a presidential primary of a major party. Haley was awarded nine delegates and Trump was awarded eight delegates. Haley won Chittenden County, Grand Isle County, Lamoille County, Washington County, Addison County, Windsor County, and Windham County. Trump won Franklin County, Orleans County, Essex County, Caledonia County, Orange County, Rutland County, and Bennington County. This was the first Republican primary since 2000 in which Vermont did not vote for the winner of the nomination. The Vermont primary was the only state primary, and one of only two primaries along with the District of Columbia primary, of the 2024 Republican presidential primaries that Donald Trump lost. The state has an open primary system, which allows any registered voter to vote in the Republican nominating contest.
