Upgrades to items can be used to improve the stats of a particular item. Based on Full Post of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all the upgraded benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly depending on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is because of how many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.
It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to limit how much PvP gear players are able to wear, since PvP is limited at a lower level. Players can view their average item level in their character sheet.
Utilizing the level of an item will allow players to compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a measure of the item's damage and its quality. The level of an item can be used to compare items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.
The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.
There are many theories about how the level of an item is determined. One theory suggests that the item level is determined by an equation that determines the worth of the stats of an item really are. It considers that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item. This could result in a calculated item's ilvl that is often very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.
However, this isn't the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl as the size of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding a level to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.
Item Stats
Item stats can make or break an item for players. The game utilizes them in a variety of ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves boosted by the player's level.
The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. A grey or white item for instance, can only be upgraded once, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.
Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The affixes could provide the item additional damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or reducing the cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.
All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.
In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which of the available stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it's a unique item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats gained or lost at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the likelihood of locating items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in early game runs since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading that increase with each new level of item. It is also possible to be increased by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor, and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to increase the value of 40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Certain items, such as the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be crafted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items can be bought at the store or constructed using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..
The Luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects can be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
